    I threw more money than I wanted at the Woodpecker. The original super fence was ok, especially with the additional micro-adjust (extra $), but I could never get the infeed and outfeed fences to stay coplaner. Then Woodpecker came out with an expensive $350 SF-Pro upgrade that I bought. The upgrade has precise screw adjustment that solves problems with the original design.

    • @jkmwoodworking
      @jkmwoodworking Před 7 dny

      I agree that Woodpeckers is a bit expensive. It does seem like really solid stuff, and well engineered. I wasn't aware of the issue with the infeed and outfeed fence staying co-planer. Thanks for sharing that info, and thanks for your great comments on several of my videos!!

    I am glad I came across this video. My 10-inch cutech came with the aluminum fence. I didn’t know there was a cast iron one now available.

  • @peternicholsonu6090

    I built a aluminium trailer very very similar to Airstream Basecamp. Am old and retired and needed the distraction. Built the frame from oak and skinned it with 4’x8’ aluminium sheet. To improve on the Airstream I made the front window much higher than they did plus instead of framed windows I made continuous black tint acrylic sheets 900mm wide (Australia) but 2.4m long (8’). I got the front curved piece out of one sheet which I draped over a saw horse in the sun for couple days. Then use hairdryer and strapping to bring it to shape...worked great. 2 rear 90 degree corners it used a jigs and butane torch and block of pine to get it right. This week I started to bring it up to ready for sale and realised what the design team at Airstream knew all along. In the sun the forward black tinted acrylic expanded breaking my elastic seals. Tomorrow I shall remove the front screen and fit curved channel top and bottom and slotted end attachment points to allow needed sideways movement. Need then added trim above to ensure waterproofing. May as well add LED strip lighting to the upper seal whilst I’m at it. Am sign writing side and rear for upcoming road trip to sell as a 2 berth camper or coffee kiosk.

    nice job, next time put some painters tape on the bottom edge to act as a drip edge to prevent the epoxy from creating drips on the bottom, you then peel the tape off after it has set up but BEFORE it is hard. should give you a nice clean bottom edge. Using the router was a great idea.

    The recent improvements of the Cutech Jointers (the older versions are painted gray and newer are black) is exactly why I chose them. Not only did they give the option of a cast iron fence, they also added more supporting brace bars running across inside the jointer that makes it feel more solid then the fact that benchtops all have the same outside appearance but this has extra stability, along with the fence supports which is also a fantastic upgrade. The fact the new ones came in 8, 10 or 12 inch ( the latter two have a bit more power under the hood) was also big....though I chose the 8" one for space reasons. Once I realized all the extra design they put in over their older cookie cutter benchtop design of basically all of them I wanted to support a company that has pushed that design further in making it a better jointer overall. And just so you know, they have also changed the support brackets that you can get with the cast iron fence from 7 !/2 to 8 1/4 for added stability since the cast iron is obviously heavier....and taller. just another example of them taking in feedback and doing something about it...love mine!!!

    So you apply all your coats of Spar Urethane & don't sand till before the last coat applied? No sanding in-between coats? I'm at that stage right now and just trying to get advice.

    • @jkmwoodworking
      @jkmwoodworking Před měsícem

      I apply all of the coats without sanding between coats, and only sand before the final coat. However, it's important to put on each coat before the previous coat cures. Once the urethane cures, then you need to sand it or steel wool to rough it up a bit so the next coat will stick. If each coat is only a couple hours apart, then it will stick good to the previous not-yet-cured coat. Sorry such a wordy explanation, hope it is understandable.

I was going to buy the water-based spar urethane to protect my gloss paint. But the paint supply guys told me that it was unnecessary if using water-based exterior gloss paint. Because it already had the UV protection, etc mixed in it. What do you think?

    Curious, how much deflection do the steel bars get with the router weight comparing the middle to the outside? I wondered if that’s why people were opting for the other beams with the support like you have on the side? Was it to reduce sag under weight? Or did you find that the 20MM thick bar was thick enough to avoid deflection?

    • @jkmwoodworking
      @jkmwoodworking Před měsícem

      That's why I went with the thicker 20 mm on the cross rails, instead of the 16 mm that I used on the side rails. I don't notice any deflection at all, and believe the result is a totally flat workpiece. The 20 mm rails are really stiff, they actually feel stronger/stiffer than the 16 mm rails with the support bracket that I used for the side rails.

    Why does the head being spiral count as a spiral cutter?, I guess the blades are staggered which I guess might help the cut?, I used to have a bird head I installed into a rigid 13" planer, I can't remember if knives where square, wildfire got my shop. It cut great.
