The blood coming out of the windshield does make sense. The captain (who was sitting at the right side instead of left for whatever reason) was partially ejected through the windshield when the plane impacted the snow bank. The nose gear of the plane compressed the cockpit instrument panel against the captain’s chest, and the captain’s head was ejected through the windshield.

This is why it was only discovered that the ship had broken in two when Robert Ballard found the wreckage in 1985. Visibility was terrible. It was a new moon so the moon didn't give any light. After the lights went out, it was practically total darkness. Just the twinkling stars...

Imagine sitting in a lifeboat in a freezing cold ocean and all of a sudden the power goes out the screaming gets louder and then all of a sudden you here a big giant boom and sparks start flying out of the ship the lights turn to a dim red color and then you realize that the ship has just split in half. Truly terrifying.

I still do not understand how people survived that flight. Total hydraulic failure is such a catastrophic event that I have only heard of 2 cases where the plane managed to crash land soft enough for folks to survive. This is not something you survive, almost ever. And then, you have the landing itself. The fact that 185 people survived that impact and subsequent cartwheel is a miracle. The crew in the cockpit did everything they could, and it shows. No pilot is trained to deal with what those guys dealt with, but they persevered. They fought to keep that airplane flying as long as they could, and they absolutely deserve every bit of lease that can be given.
