"Trashed" Tron Arcade Restoration, Softer Music Version!
** This is a reduced/softer music version for those who prefer a quieter, more documentary-style presentation **
The original, full-throttle video can be found at: czcams.com/video/KhHNqwRHC9Q/video.html
This one is perhaps his most epic restoration yet!
Join Tod as he tackles his latest (and maybe greatest?) arcade restoration challenge -- TRON!
He starts his journey with a road trip to pick up a Tron arcade cabinet that nearly ended up in a burn pile (and rightfully so!). Missing nearly all of its major parts, Tod has to gather the required components and figure out how to put them back together into a working game. The nearly six-month-long restoration process includes woodworking, wiring, circuit board repair, arcade monitor rebuilding, polishing, painting, and so much more!
By the end of the video Tron is up and running and ready to take its spot in the 1980s-style arcade. Hopefully you will enjoy the ride and gain some helpful knowledge about arcade games and the movie itself. As always, Tod approaches his work with a sense of humor and keeps the video light and upbeat.

Pretty cool, thanks for sharing.
You really need to get a better dust mask. Fiberglass and resin will shred your lungs, and those surgical masks aren't designed for dust. You can get a good 3M respirator with changeable P100 filters for under 50 bucks and you can keep using the filters until they get too hard to breath through.
I am using better dust masking now, but keep in mind I probably sand a dozen times per year and always outside with a breeze. If I were doing things more regularly I definitely would use a respirator as a rule. Definitely want to keep safe over the long haul. Thanks!

Jeeze, now all you need is a decent pizza place to put all those cabinets in.
My wife says the same thing. And maybe Putt-Putt :)
Good job, thanks for posting, and good luck with your channel. I was the BOSS at Tron and Satan's Hollow, too.
Thanks! Much appreciated!
Love all of the TRON clips and lore between segments :] another amazing detailed restoration! I'm loving these! Would you mind if I sent you a Facebook friend request?
Thanks! If you track me down on social media, I’m pretty public.

I would have sworn that the joystick always glowed like that. Mandela effect I guess. Or I'm just wrong hehe.
I still don’t know for 100% sure but I definitely feel the same :)
Great restoration skills. I'd work on your dickering though😂
I dont normal watch very long videos, but this was very interesting, Enjoyed how much hard work and love goes into restoring an Arcade machine... Keeping gaming history alive 👾
Thanks!
1:01:51 seems to me, it would be easier to just replace both ends with modern molex connectors so you do not have to deal with finding those Nintendo special ones.
I did have that as a backup plan but try to keep connectors original as much as possible…sometimes just to make it convenient down the road if I have to switch something out with an original harness. But often just to try to stay authentic. Can’t always, though :)
Your collection is wild 😮😮😮
You are definitely a wizard 😂 Amazing work my friend. I'm an autobody painter and for a DIY you do decent there too 👌
I’m still working on those skills but getting there :)
It's mindblowing that you are a Dentist but have this hobby and extensive knowledge of electronics restoration. Your collection is probably the best I've seen. I mean, even TWO World Championships cartridges?? Just amazing.
Thanks! Lots of years of working on it so it really added up!
Man, I want to love your videos. I want to subscribe. I can't get past the horrible choice of music. Dude, it's not needed.
There’s a version with lighter music, if you prefer. And I’ll keep that in mind for future videos.
You replied. I'm gonna subscribe. I know it's a lot of work putting a long video together. You're not annoying to listen to, and you're a fountain of vintage arcade knowledge. Talk it up. That's all I'm saying. Thanks again for a reply. It shows you care.
Awesome restoration and the countless problem solving involved. I was born a year after this game released, but remember it from the movie D.A.R.Y.L.
Thanks! I don’t think I ever saw the movie but that’s a cool reference:)

@@tcurtis49 awesome; can't wait! 👍
Where is your arcade located?
Most of it is in my home in southern Indiana. One of my other videos is a complete walkthrough of the collection.
Love your videos. Question; why add the rear strait roller wheels when you’re already adding the swivel casters
If you look at most 4-wheel carts, the two near the handle are swivel and the two in back are straight. This lets you move them around easily enough but if you want to park it you only have to engage the brakes on the front ones. With an arcade game, if you push it into the lineup where you want it, you can lock it in place with the two casters in front, which you can easily reach, and the back won't sway side to side. Lately I haven't used the locking casters much anyway, as most of my games are on carpet and sink in enough that they don't move anyway. Thanks!
FANTASTIC nice work on restoring My favorite Video arcade game of all time.
Thanks!
i enjoy watching your videos. I hope you will restore my favorite arcade game, Robotron 2084
I already have :) Sometime I might make a retrospective video because it was a major restoration. And a surprise one, as I had no idea that was what was originally in a cabinet I bought.
most underrated channel in it's genre
Thanks! Very kind of you to say :)
Fire hazard
Well, the monitors certainly are!
What an awesome restoration job 😂excellent work!!!
Sangat bagus, keren, mengingatkan game2 jaman dulu 😊
Aww man you have gauntlet ❤❤❤❤
One of my favorites!
@@tcurtis49 spent much of my youth down the arcade playing that….all day for 10p 🤪
In the late 80s, when I was around 20, I was an electronics technician in the Navy, living in Maine. I went through a time where I would search through the local dump and get electronics to tinker with. One day I found a "Moon Patrol" arcade game. I scabbed in a power supply and the darn thing worked! It had a little video garbage, but was playable. I hung onto it for a while, but it was lost to the kid-raising and moving of my 20s. 😢
That's a really good find :) It's certainly fun bringing games back to life--and not terribly complicated unless you are dealing with circuit board repairs. Most of them are pretty straightforward. Well, at least straightforward enough to get me into fixing them up!
@tcurtis49 I saw on the map in your video that you're near Bedford, Indiana. I'm near Nineveh, Indiana. I have been making a gaming arcade machine for years. I use a client PC with a 32" LED monitor and a home made 400 Watt audio system. It's a work in progress but sounds and looks amazing.
@@Twiddlerdammit Yep, not that far away. Sounds awesome :)
Nice job BUT why do you Americans pronouce Soldering as soddering its spelt soldering as in sold-er-ring
I don't know why but American English and English English don't pronounce words as they are spelled, so I guess that's a question for a linguist, not a dude just soddering along :)
Just rewatched this edit better than the original video you've done great work can't wait to see what's next ❤❤❤
Yep, I wish I could go back in time and find the happy medium but I'm glad to accommodate various audio comfort levels. I have 3 projects going at once (well, one is basically done) so at least 3 long-ish videos to come this year. Thanks!
I think my only constructive criticism would be that your paint spray gun skills could use a little tuning up. Otherwise, awesome restoration! Definitely subscribing to watch more of your work 🤘
I had issues with my spray gun--the spring inside had come out at some point so I was winging it. Not that I don't have other improvements to make that maybe will show up in a video before too long :)
@@tcurtis49 hey, still great work (and honestly, pretty impressive too) excited to watch more when I've got time!
WOW! You are a true restoration craftsman!! What an amazing job. I have such fond memories of this era of games. Unbelievable how you brought it back to life.
Thanks! Much appreciated!
This video has been recommended to me a few times, but the length always scared me off, but it was really engrossing and so well done. I mean, that was one heck of a restoration! I wasn't sure about keeping the side graphics, but in the end you made them look really good. TRON is one of my favorites - such a great looking machine - and it's great to see one saved from the scrap heap. Great job!
Thanks! I was glad I could salvage the original sideart and have it look relatively normal. It was a fun restoration :)
Whoa, didn't know these existed. We had an actual 5200 growing up and the joysticks pretty much sucked the enjoyment out of the system. Fire buttons would stop working, buttons on the keypad would stop working. I became an expert at taking those things apart and playing swaptronics to get them working again. This is really awesome, nice work!
Thanks! First comment on this old restoration in a long time :) Still a very cool system but the controllers definitely had problems!
So AWESOME!
dude this is insane!
Brings back so many memories of when i was a young teenager.
Was it Pole Position 1 or 2 where you could drive the entire track at full speed?
I certainly can’t do it on 1 but maybe someone can. I haven’t played enough of 2 to know.
I used to play this at a fish and chip shop in London, back in the day. Amazing work. Subscribed!
Awesome :) Thanks!
Wells gardner monitor. Used to repair those games and monitors back in the 80's. Repaired thousands of them. Still have my blue soldapullt.
I’m always happy to work on old WG monitors. Got 2 G07s on the table right now. Haven’t seen one I couldn’t repair yet :)
Now do Discs of Tron!!!!! kidding, Great Work, I went to Disneyland when this movie was out, the arcade there had second monitors up top so everyone could watch you play.
If I find one, I will! And I’ve seen pictures with the 2nd monitor-that extra weight had to strain these poorly designed cabinets. But certainly cool!
Superb!
Would love to see an old, table-top, Silverball machine😊
What a scumbad seller, raising the price like that.
Not too unusual around here-multiple people trying to buy the same thing on Marketplace leads to a price war sometimes. He was actually a great guy to work with.
thanks for always being so informative and thorough!
Thanks for the kind comment!
I have used Micromesh kits to polish scratches and pits out of plexiglass aircraft canopies. It went from 400 grit all the way down to 3000 grit. Could do some amazing work with those kits. One had to remember to disperse the polishing over an area wider than the actual damage to cut down on distortion. It got more time consuming, the finer the grit became. Also worked well for putting mirror finishes on metal. The great thing about them is that they are reusable.
I will certainly check into that. Thanks!
Very far away from being a good restauration. Also next time take GOOD pictures with GOOD light so we can see the (crappy) result.
Thanks! I took a GOOD picture of your CRAPPY comment. Would you like me to add it to my next video? I’m not sure how anyone could possibly watch this restoration and feel it was not a miracle, but you, sir, are the ultimate downer :)
@Sad_Rainbow_83 - Yes, the over 180,000 views speaks volumes to the poor restoration 🙄 You are a sad rainbow.

Glad you popped up as a suggested video. Im very meticulous like you, so its satisfying to see such a detail oriented restoration. Subscribed!
I definitely like to take my time and do it as best I can, which can sometimes really drag out a project. But feels good once it’s done :)
Great work, but I have to say, I'm kind of surprised you did not rebuild the entire cabinet. You got all those killer tools to use, and clearly, you have the skill set. I guess maybe for resale, it's better to say it's still an original cabinet as opposed to one that you built.
Could easily have done that but my goal is always to preserve as much of the original as I can. And this one I was keeping so it was worth the extra effort.
Thanks for sharing. Many found memories of the same game. Did you ever visit Spaceport during your time in Bloomington? Marble Madness at IMU was a favorite of mine.
Absolutely! Spent a lot of quarters at Aladdin’s Castle in the College Mall growing up and occasionally made it to Spaceport as a teenager. Played a lot of Dragon’s Lair there. I think Marble Madness was gone from the IMU while I was in college there-I remember playing Ivan Ironman Stewart Racing with my friends quite a bit.
I liked tron when it came out but i was more of a defender and pole position player my buddy had the hand eye coordination to complete some of levels. Was lots of fun
It’s definitely a strange mix of gameplay but those other games are certainly classics!
Oh Yeah... - Ramstein Air Base Bowling Alley Tron Machine Champ - 1981!
