This one is perhaps his most epic restoration yet!
Join Tod as he tackles his latest (and maybe greatest?) arcade restoration challenge -- TRON!
He starts his journey with a road trip to pick up a Tron arcade cabinet that nearly ended up in a burn pile (and rightfully so!). Missing nearly all of its major parts, Tod has to gather the required components and figure out how to put them back together into a working game. The nearly six-month-long restoration process includes woodworking, wiring, circuit board repair, arcade monitor rebuilding, polishing, painting, and so much more!
By the end of the video Tron is up and running and ready to take its spot in the 1980s-style arcade. Hopefully you will enjoy the ride and gain some helpful knowledge about arcade games and the movie itself. As always, Tod approaches his work with a sense of humor and keeps the video light and upbeat.

I'm truly impressed by your receptiveness to viewer feedback. Personally, I'm a fan of your videos, although I find the music a bit overwhelming at times-it's just a matter of personal taste. When I noticed someone expressing strong reactions to the music, I couldn't help but smile and nod in agreement, yet I chose not to comment to avoid detracting from the excellence of your restoration videos. What I really want to say is, thank you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and journey with us so openly, and for considering those of us with heightened audio sensitivity. While we may be a minority, the adjustments you've made clearly demonstrate your dedication and care.
My main goal is to entertain and have people enjoy what I enjoy as well. I had no negative feedback on the music until after finishing all 3 videos so it was too late…but…I could go back and try to please both crowds…so I did :) Hopefully it doesn’t muddy the waters too much having two versions. @@tcurtis49I agree that the music is a bit loud and overwhelming but very light soft music in the back round can be ok maybe to please both sides just do very low soft music in the background as the music is still a bit loud even in this video although it didn’t bother me !
I'm amazed. Not just because the restoration work and the video editing/on-screen commentary is all so comprehensive, but also because I too was thinking some of the music was a bit overwhelming in the original. I was thinking "boy wouldnt it be great if CZcams somehow had a feature to remove music from video playback..." Then I found out this version exists. I feel better knowing I wasnt the only one feeling overwhelmed by some (not all!) of the music. Thanks for making this version

I watched through the tron video in full, but as with other commenters I was definitely struggling with the music's volume being louder than the rest of it. I really REALLY appreciate this, and am so very happy that you put the effort in to cater to us like this! Keep up the great work, I love your videos!

I do all the editing. And it does take some time for each one. Good news is I’m close to finishing up editing on another project but have some loose ends to wrap up, and about to start editing another epic arcade restoration that is also almost complete. So at least 2 videos in the mix before long. Then a third project currently underway as well as a bonus fourth. So stay tuned :) And thanks!
I can't believe what parts sell for. 179 for a blacklight fixture? I shouldv'e kept every cabinet I ever parted out in the early to mid 90s. I will say, your restoration and attention to detail is impressive.
Please continue with the detailed explanatory documentary style. I know it must be hard to grow a channel if one project takes up multiple months and you can't pump out content every 2 weeks but the process of auction, pick up and restore is so well presented. It is my favorite arcade repair channel. I personally liked the original music although it could have maybe used some variety in tracks throughout.

I absolutely enjoyed every minute of your restoration video. You are an absolute natural with your hands in woodwork, electronics etc. Thank you with your tips and I learnt a lot about how to discharge the monitor load and recapping the capacitors. My all time arcade cabinet game from the early 80s is the Williams Defender. Could you make this your next project please?

It’s one of those things-I think the music selection adds a lot to the overall atmosphere of the work being done but for others it’s just in the way. I will hopefully find the right balance as I keep working on these. Thanks!

Battlezone is the first arcade game I can remember playing as a kid. It was at our local hardware store and I would play it as my dad shopped. I was too short and had to stand on a wooden box to play. Also I can just remember playing Moon Patrol, I would have been about 5 years old.
Battlezone is one of the first games I remember playing. Along with Lunar Lander and Night Driver. Even as primitive as they were they were still really fun!

Do you remember the game Afterburner? I have the stand up version. It is a bit rough, and doesn’t fully work. Everything works accept for the stick. I not sure the issue. Maybe someday you can do a video on Afterburner or maybe even a Dragon’s Lair resto. Love your channel!! Keep the content coming.
I fixed up an Afterburner several years back that I got at a garage sale. Was a cool game but we didn’t play it much and I ended up selling it. Another one may cross my path again someday… I’m on the lookout for Dragon’s Lair but have a couple of fun projects going right now… more content to come :)

Great job. It's amazing how much hardware it used to take in 1982 to do what an FPGA and an LCD display can do now! If you look at 1:09:12 you can see your video glitch is outside of the wide white line on the picture. I can't see any reason why the programmer would not draw that white line right to the edge of the available drawing area, so I think the glitch has nothing to do with your video RAM. It looks like the timing of the vertical blanking is not quite right.
I found out later it’s known and it is indeed the programmers using a little bit of video RAM where they thought it wouldn’t be visible. Or something to that effect. Either way, it’s supposed to be trimmed out by the monitor controls.

Keep in mind I balanced the music on my computer to where it seemed perfect, but it wasn’t until it had been up for quite a while that I saw complaints and tried it on other devices. Sometimes it’s great and sometimes it’s way too loud, depending on device. I’ll try to find the sweet spot on future videos :)
@@tcurtis49 yep... the tech today is great, but still not perfect... Thanks for doing this upload, I enjoyed it.. Tron was one of my favorites back in the day... use to go as a teenager to StarBase 1... many O' quarters loss to these things... :)

@@tcurtis49it’s gotten larger over the years, they moved the pinball games to a different building, which is both crappy and nice. I’m not much of a pinball player so it’s fine with me, I have friends that ick at it. The one thing I’ve noticed over the past decade or so though is that the older games seem to be disappearing, say anything before the late 80’s. You used to see early 80’s stuff more, I’m guessing they’re just too difficult to maintain now, I do wonder where they ended up. An original Pac-Man or Asteroids is difficult to find there now.
That being said, it’s amazing, almost too much, if I had to guess there’s probably 5000 arcade games in their main building. It’s $20 for the whole day, free play, come and go as you want. There’s an excellent little brewery right down the street, in walking distance, and a couple good little taquerias close by.
I took my whole team there back in May for an outing, a dozen of us, most of them are in their mid twenties (half my age) so it was sort of culture shock for them. But, they did get to get the “real” arcade experience like we did as kids. One thing I consistently hear from people of that age group say, “boy, games were a lot harder back then”.
Thank you for this version, this is more watchable for me. Had it been more 80s era techno music I could have probably tolerated it but the dubstep stuff was abit too much for my taste.

Have you ever done a CRT to LCD conversion to any of your games? The reason I ask is because if you had a picture tube fail or wear out. I would hate to see that render an awesome arcade machine unplayable.
I have an LCD monitor I use sometimes in testing but try to keep the CRT’s running. For now I can steal parts from discarded televisions (and that’s what others do) but at some point there may be no choice. I like the way images look on CRTs much better, personally.

Pretty much done with one project that is more video game related and the video is in late-stage editing, well over the hump on a major arcade restoration, and early in on a third project that is currently torn apart and scattered across my garage. I have to wrap up everything before it gets cold and I need the garage for my truck…so I’ve got my hands full :)
I'm not going to watch the same 2 hour video again. But if you post more restorations without the overbearing dubstep, I'll probably watch that.

I admire your passion and electronics skills, but the wood working & painting side of things needs more effort to class it as restored for durability purposes.
But keep going, and you will pick up new techniques along the way to make things easier and give a better and more solid finish. 😉👍
There’s a distinction beyond “restored” to like new and “restored” to fixed. I don’t care much for games that look brand new. As far as the other sections, what am I sacrificing as far as durability with wood working and painting? I’ve been doing this for 30 or so years now and have never had an issue with any previous repair deteriorating.
@tcurtis49 Hey, I understand that. But there is also a distinction between restored and patched up. 😉
At some point the wood loses it durability. I was simply point out that there are other ways to restore its strength when it gets to the point that the bottom of this was. A simple cutting off and replacement of the botton of the sides with a biscuit joiner and glue then fill the join would have looked great and reduced the chance of further flaking/wood deteriorration in the future.
Also, undercoat is very important. We all hate having to do it, but it really does help as it's job is to soak into the surface of the wood and give the paint a good suface to cling too.

@tcurtis49 PS. Some oil based polyurethane on the bottom quarter of the inside of the cabinet and exposed wood on the underside will help to prevent scuffing and stop the bottom of the unit from wicking up any water in future should it happen to be unfortunate enough to come in contact with any. But not on any visible areas though, that stuff yellows over time. But it's brilliant stuff and gives an extra layer of protection after all your hard work.

@mrlox9576 Good point on the biscuit corners-for sure. And that’s something I will likely show on other projects. Keep in mind these videos are going to an extreme to see what’s possible rather than what’s most practical and if I were a professional restorer I would have cut all new pieces for sure and probably not even bothered with chopping it down.
Interestingly, as far as primer, I have never had paint come off. Ever. Except when I’ve primed. So I’m cautious with it. Sometimes it’s necessary just to have an even surface and sometimes the final coats (oil-based) don’t adhere as well to it as they would to the existing previously primed and now stripped wood. But I do typically use it with new wood. I didn’t on the bottom of the Tron because that’s a surface that’s usually not painted at all and I just wanted to hide the seams on the sides with a thin layer to make it more attractive. And I definitely do better with no primer on Bondo, but maybe I’ve just had bad luck. I primed a ton on the Red Tent video, which was mostly metal. No argument there. And my next project is back to bare wood so it will definitely get primed.
Often in the restoration world there is a wide divide of opinions on what is the “right” way to fix something so I don’t know if feedback is a difference of opinion or a true error. And I definitely don’t want to be making true errors. But since I’m working on my own projects I have to live with the results, and I do get to see over time what works well and what doesn’t. But I’ll keep adjusting and watching out for helpful advice. Thanks!

As for the 'right way', forget that concept. I wasn't trying to criticise. Do whatever works for you, but try to stay open to suggestions, sometimes there can be a new easier/better way to do certain things that someone has figured out, or new products that work better.
But keeping a few rolls of generic colored decals (black, white, etc) that ypu can cut to size/shape can be a real life saver when just wanting to cover small areas without too much work (or to just fix part of a larger decal).
