    Would you have an idea how to prevent the concrete bond beam being a thermal bridge all around the house?

    • @thiscobhouse
      @thiscobhouse Před dnem

      You would need to add insulation over it, I think. Or you could build the bond beam with wood instead of concrete. Perhaps less thermal bridging this way. In most cases, I think the thermal bridging of a bond beam won't make any significant difference, but that's just my opinion on this. Good question!

    Im sorry but i cant agree with this idea. I know your trying to keep the engineers and code monkeys happy but if moisture gets trapped under the bond beam it will weaken the cob. Historically Cob houses never used or needed bond beams. It just adds a whole lot of unnecessary expense and complexity to the build. If you must have a way to secure your trusses to the top of the wall just bury timber dead men in the last lift. Easy. Or you can bury threaded rod with an anchor plate on the end. Angle iron works well for that. The problem with concrete is that wherever you have penetrations/ starter bars exposed to air and moisture you get concrete cancer.

    We should have the COB Institute request random particle generation and simulation in the Physics Software like COMSOL and Altair. I'd like to see it for Tribo-Electric Charge (Static Electric charge) anyway it's not there yet. But probably not far off. They could then be simulated Seismically for Rammed Earth, COB, . . . I'd like to know how the walls perform under Transverse and Longitudinal Waves. The simulation of mud might not be far off of space dust and Clustering / Clumping Theory - Nebular Hypothesis. Not sure doubt anyone has done it yet. Oh one of the Mudgirls Structures stopped a tree. lol. That's pretty impressive actually.

    Soffit is American terminology for eaves. They call barge boards fascia boards. Luckily carpentry doesn't require nearly as many tools as cabinetry and joinery. With a decent compound chop saw, spirit level, a hammer, impact screw driver and drill, your pretty much good to go. Glad to see you put decent eaves on your building's. So important not to skimp on those.

    Hi Alex, Good to hear your doing better and improving. Well my question is about the Seattle area (PNW not one city) and it can be rather wet and rainy. We have heavy fog 2nd only to Main. England had rain and fog. Well no hurry just wondered how you would find this part of the country for COB.

    • @thiscobhouse
      @thiscobhouse Před 8 dny

      I've heard of a LOT of cob buildings in the Pacific Northwest. I've only ever visited there once, but I would say it would do very well up there overall. Fog and rain are no issue for the cob. You may have some extra heating expense in the winter, but other than that I think cob would be great there.

  • @thecataclysmitician4661

  • @joschmoyo4532

    Stabilised Cob is an Oxymoron. Adding cement to cob destabilises it. You cannot mix cement and clay together period. It says so clearly on the cement bag to make sure that your sand is not greasey. It must be washed, ie free of clay. Stabilised mud bricks start to crumble and disintegrate after a few year's. Eventually the walls will become structurally unsound. Clay is a self healing binder that breathes. It regulates moisture. The straw gives mechanical and chemical bonding. Compression over the year's improves colloidal cementation so you don't need to use cement. Natural Cob gets stronger with age. Render with lime is okay if you need more weather resistance.

    Bury a pipe underground on the north side (in the shade) under the frost line to bring cool air in from outside, cooled in the undergroung tunnel, then vent into the house from the floor then flowing out air vents in the roof. Free air conditioning. It works.

    • @jacquesxmas

      How long of a pipe do you need?

    • @sentinel9046
      @sentinel9046 Před 15 dny

      @jacquesxmas the longer the better. Probably 20-50 yards depending on your situation. The temperature all over the earth below the frost line is a constant 52 degrees. Natural draw of the hot air going out of the roof vents will draw new air through the underground pipe to get cool and dehumidifier prior to flowing into the house from vents in the floor. No fan necessary. Just natural convection.

      @jacquesxmas Před 15 dny

      @@sentinel9046whay if you coil the pipe. I don't think i have 50 yards of space

    • @sentinel9046
      @sentinel9046 Před 14 dny

      @jacquesxmas you don't want to impede the air flow, and you need to be able to clean it out. Put wire mesh to block the rodents, snakes, and other critters. This design has been tested in many Earthships that are able to maintain a stable indoor temperature of around 72deg at any attitude. Check out earthship biotecture for diagrams. If you are using pex pipe with water, like in a heat pump or radiant heating/cooling, then you would coil the pipe to maximize the heat transfer surface area on a minimal footprint.

    Have you done any timber frame earth homes before? I’m going to be building a timber frame cabin and I’m hoping to use sawdust as the walls. It’s a fairly small cabin around 14x 16. I’m having a hard time deciding on how to incorporate the foundation for earth walls and timber frame. I’m thinking I’ll build the walls up on a pony wall and have the timber either on footings, possibly attached to the pony wall. Or should I just build an extra thick pony wall? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

    I couldn't agree more, watching all these build videos the number one mistake I see are the stem-walls and foundations. I plan on starting a build next year and am going 100% concrete period the end. The last thing I will chance is having foundation problems or failure after spending all the time, money and effort it takes to build one. It just doesn't make sense.
