My advice to anyone who is a raw begginer would be to build a chicken or garden shed. All you will need is a compound cross cutting saw, much quicker and more accurate than a hand held circular saw, a cordless drill and impact driver drill, a hammer. It all boils down to making frame's and fastening them. Clad the frame's with corrugated iron or weatherboard. If you can master that job you will have the confidence to tackle anything bigger. If you make the shed big enough for a single bed and campstove you have temporary accommodation.
Then build a single room Cob challet. Master the principles.
Make absolutely sure you dig a rubble trench foundation. It's the secret of success to Cob housing. It isolates the floor inside from moisture and flooding rain. Kills any possibility of rising damp. It's the reason why Cob houses stay warm dry and cozy. DONT waste money on concrete.

I'm exactly in the same spot ..62 this month. I have land in TN but no help. Other than a Facebook plea..... Angie's list ..thumbtack site...hiring help. But I also just retired and have limited income. Unless I sell my current home on one acre.. maybe I'm just being unrealistic.

I want so bad to listen to this but he is unorganized and unprepared to be on camera - collect tools and learn skills is not video worthy.
His message is; GET YOUR TOOLS. START LEARNING THE DIFFERENT TRADES. LEARN TO BUILD IT YOURSELF. BE PREPARED TO BUILD.
