Is This Pedal More Than a Gimmick? - Rainger FX Chop Fuzz
Thanks to Rainger FX and MAS Distro for send this unit out.
In this video I check out the Rainger FX Chop Fuzz. This is a wild and wonderfull fuzz pedal by the mad scientists over at Rainger FX. A full on gated fuzz with plenty of wild and wacky ways to manipulate the sound. Tuneable drones, choppy tremolo, and an overtone section that can allow you to tune the fuzz sound to just about frequency you desire. Tie that in with the pressure sensitive Igor expression pad, and this pedal goes far beyond a gimmick and becomes a versatile and valuable addition to any rig.

This Fuzz is BRUTAL! - God City Instruments Pariah

When it comes to Fuzz pedals and Metal, there is only a fairly niche crossover. While some sub genres of metal embrace a fuzzier and looser brand of guitar tones, tightness and aggression is usually the name of the game. There a few pedals that can embrace both sides of the spectrum, and the Pariah is perhaps the best. Developed by two absolute titians in the world of metal, Will Putney and Kur...

    I've never owned a Mega Distortions but I've owned Turbo Distortions, Distortion DS-1s, Super Overdrive SD-1s, Turbo Overdrives, and many other boss pedals. I never rely on a pedal for most of my overdrive. I get the amp cranking just right and use the pedal to push it off the edge and shape the gain. This has worked for me for decades, going back to the 80s. I think the reason some pedals don't get the love they deserved is because they are not used right, like the Metal Zone which only now is getting respect. A friend, a great blues rock player, has been using a Metal Zone for thirty years as a lead boost, and it sounds amazing.

If it sounds good it is good. I do enjoy the reissue 72 with the Cunife reissues. They do a special thing, whatever that is. They sound good in a jazzmaster too. With a little compromise. My friends were listening to terrible stuff like Five Finger Death Punch, Metallica, and Iron Maiden while I was eviscerating my eardrums with Electric Wizard, SLEEP, Conan, and Sunn O))) and on that same note my first vinyl record I ever bought was Dopesmoker, because it had just been reissued on Southern Lord at the time. Great times, too bad they never got it despite my continual push for them to listen and rise above that normie radio trash.

    Really enjoyed hearing everything in some context, and getting to hear some gain staging examples. I do think for me its wayyyyy easier to swap out fuzz/distortion/OD pedals compared to modulation and delay that often feel like more integral to sounds while gain just feels like different flavours of what I am playing - other than maybe some spitty fuzz. Also I really wouldn't worry about board size much, I know a lot of guys that make huge boards before heading to the studio/writing sessions because they want as many options as possible and plan to layer a whole lot, then find a more refined and stripped back sound for touring that allows for a much smaller board.

    These really do have an SG vibe- but 1300 bucks is a bit high considering I can get a USA SG standard for pretty much the same price. In fact, I have a '61 SG with Maestro Vibrola that I got from the demo shop that only cost 200 more than this. I know, most people will say these are built better- but I'm not so sure about that. (not too mention nitrocellulose finish and way better hardware/pickups) But for 3,000- the USA made Dunables actually look really good for the money. Better pickups, probably way better wood, better finish, and better hardware- 3 grand from a smaller manufacturer is a fair price. Especially when you consider that they offer a ton of options in finish, custom pickups, and hardware. They also have a USA model called the Yeti that looks fantastic.

    • @strazburg
      @strazburg Před 2 měsíci

      You make some interesting points, and I would definitely agree that the USA Dunables are a good price for a custom made instrument, but that’s about it. I’m not sure where you live, but here in Aus an SG standard is at least $1000 AUD more than the Dunable. As for the quality, I owned a Gibson Les Paul (and I still have a Fender USA Tele), and apart from the nitro (which is just an asthmatic and preferential choice) I have noticed very little difference in quality. The pickups in the Dunable, while not the best you have ever heard, are far from terrible, and are on par with much more expensive brands and models stock pickups. I actually prefer them to the Duncans that were in the Les Paul. Plus, pickups are probably the most changed parts of a guitar, many people do it just to try something else, not just cos the stock pickups suck. The Hardware is on par, and I have used the Dunable heavily since I made this video, took it on tour and everything, and it has been nothing but reliable and amazing. As an added bonus, the headstock won’t snap off if I look at it wrong. The woods (which don’t really affect the tone anyway) are the same as the USA models and Gibsons (Mahogany body and neck, ebony fretboard). I have owned, and still do own, guitars made all over the world, and while some people still think anything not made in the US is a sub par instrument, that simply just isn’t the case anymore (in fact Japan has been making better guitars than the US since the 70s, don’t fight me on this I’m right). With modern manufacturing technology, such as CNC, guitars made just about anywhere are going to be good. And I’d rather pay what I did for this guitar than pay the stupid prices Epiphone are charging these days. My point is, Gibsons are a waste of money and there are so many great alternatives out there, if you are open to them.

      @@strazburg Haha- well, you're partially right about Japanese guitars having been superior back in the '70's and '80's. Hell, even Fender admits that the Japanese were making better guitars back then. But the reality is this- labor and production costs are much cheaper overseas, and the prices should reflect that. They don't. You'll never see any guitar factory other than North America that will make nitrocellulose guitars. That's because it is time intensive. It takes many coats, many sanding operations, and a whole lot of sitting in the factory curing before it's ready. No matter where you are, that costs money. And you cannot sit there and try to tell me that there are any Japanese made Fender's that can match the feel and quality of the American made ones. They are very close, but they usually don't offer the same level of hardware. They tend to do things that cater more to their market, which is very different than the other Western markets. And American Fenders are flawless- they just don't make bad ones any more. As far as Gibson goes- well nobody is going to rave about their cosmetic quality. But you don't buy a Gibson for pristine cosmetics. In fact, their most expensive models are heavily beat up. You cannot deny that Fender and Gibson just have an immeasurable quality to them that is extremely hard to match. That's why the resale is what it is. You can justify your overseas, volume made to specs guitar all you want. But let's not pretend that it on a level of the best American guitars. I say this not just being an owner of USA made guitars. I have more overseas guitars than US made by far. But I'm not gonna deny there is a tangible difference.

    • @strazburg
      @strazburg Před 2 měsíci

      @@mcdingus5081 Hey to each their own man, im not gonna tell you what to think, but here’s the way I see it. Sure, there might be a difference between US and other markets, though I would say, in many scenarios, it’s negligible. Sure the cheapest squire won’t live up to a US fender, but top of the line squires can, and often do, come damn close. Nitro is a luxury feature, it doesn’t make the guitar better or worse in any way, it just costs more money. Also I would disagree about Japanese fenders not being as good. They are, in my opinion, just as good, if not better, than some US models, and cost considerably less. There is a conversation to be had about how much companies are charging for guitars made oversees as opposed to western manufactured instruments, but what basis are you saying they charge too much on? Everything is more expensive now, and North Korea, Japan and Indonesia aren’t poor third world countries. They have People to pay and factories to run, just like in America. And yet, models made in those countries, with comparable features and build quality, are still substantially cheaper than US made instruments. This idea that “America makes the best guitars” is an old and outdated idea, and has been for a long time. Do they make great guitars, from a wide range of builders? Absolutely. But there are PLENTY of guitars made in other markets, for considerably less money, that stack up, and even surpass. Each of my guitars come from a different country, from Indonesia to America, and yet they are all great guitars. I get just as much enjoyment out of my squire as I do my US fender, as I do my Dunable, as I do my mex and my jap fenders. And really, at the end of the day, isn’t having fun meant to be the point of all this?

    • @mcdingus5081
      @mcdingus5081 Před 2 měsíci

      @@strazburg Hey, there is no doubt that "cheap" guitars have gotten better. Japanese, Mexican, Korean, and Indonesian- and even Chinese guitars have gotten better. But all of them make some kind of compromise in order to keep their prices down. In the US, guitars cannot be made at the lower price point, so the compromises tend to only be in factors that make for faster manufacturing, not compromising parts. The Japanese have excellent craftsmanship. I won't argue that they aren't on par. But they certainly aren't better. And sorry, but I have an American Professional II Stratocaster- that is Fender's US made "standard" Strat. You can get it in the States for 1500, often for less. Have you ever played or felt the fit and finish of those guitars? They are immaculate, have incredible pickups capable of tons of sounds, and at least in the US market, are the same price as a MIJ, and just a bit more than an Indonesian guitar. I've played very good Indonesian guitars, but when we're talking prices approaching 1500 USD (in the US market)- sorry, I'm not gonna go for it. I get your point about nitrocellulose being luxury. But you have to understand that for many- nitrocellulose is a must have. And if you want it, it's only gonna come from US made- and it costs a lot. Every single Gibson guitar is made with it. And when you consider that they also Plek every single US made guitar. Both of those things alone adds huge costs to their guitars. Yet, you can come to the US and buy a Gibson USA guitar for a few more dollars than many Indonesian made guitars. I realize you pay more overseas, but that relates more to taxes and duties- not the actual price of the guitar. Denial is more than a river in Africa. You know darn well that if cost was no object- you'd be buying a US made guitar over one made overseas. And if you don't, it's only because you never really sat down and played one. If that's the case, I suggest you never do. Because you don't know what you're missing.

    It's a great pedal. Still affordable. The low end, and the potential huge volume boost are a distinctive feature; the gain is potentially huge, obviously -- but I use it for classic rock and punk in a covers band and its name kind of suggests it's for metal only. It's really not! But yes, it has the potential to increase in price a lot because it certainly feels like no one else is using it yet it's a very functional, versatile pedal; not a gimmick.

    Great review, that pre sounds just beautiful. I have a Model T for the same porpouse but in the future I see myself buying one of these to run them in "stereo" (Or double-mono). I always run this kind of pedals direct into a power amp, but I would love to see a demostration running it into that fender amp. Thanks for the video!

      An effects loop is a "bridge" between the pre and the power amp but this is just a Preamp, just put the time-based effects after the pedal.

    It is the best? I would be careful with that :-) That's what everyone says. . but it sounds nice. . .

      The best for me, then. The title is what it is, gotta try and get eyes on my video. Don’t hate the player, hate the game.
