- Is the Boss MD-2 Mega Distortion a hidden gem of a distortion pedal? Or is its relegation to the back of the shelf a deserved one? In this video I try to find the answer. Please like and subscribe if you enjoyed.

Literally been saying for over a decade that this pedal blows the DS1 and DS2 out the water. Never understood why it isnt liked
I agree. The reason it isn’t liked is because of the tone knob. The high frequency has been described as “annoying” which it is but an EQ pedal after it fixes that.
I have bought this pedal in 2016. It's my favourite sound. I really love it❤
Really digging those riffs!
I hadn’t heard of this pedal until this morning.
I immediately ordered one
I like the MD-2 too. Heaps of low end. Pairs great with fuzz and they're like $40 used everywhere! Good vid!
I have one, and it's a great pedal. It's not usually the first pedal I usually go to, except for pure metal rhythm, but it never lets me down. It's especially great for chugging, but it'll do anything distortion. I think it got a bad rep because people were maxing out the bottom control without knowing what they were doing, and the boost knob is kind of inscrutable. Underrated and inexpensive.
I think this pedal had the misfortune of being marketed as a “grunge” pedal but I agree, this thing is pretty amazing. Sick Earth screensaver btw! 🤘
fake news. was marketed as "nu metal".
It’s was really marketed towards nu metal. A lot of bass was loved back then.
I agree with most the other comments on your performance and quality of pedal reveal summary, you earned my subscript after 30 seconds. I also will be getting one for myself because of this video AND comments, ty rock/metal bros/siss! I love the fact you switch axes to cover the voicing variations inherent to them and did a phenominal job of making those transitions seemless. I hate pots!! Damn if they dont get dirty and gritty in a short amount of time, and only stay clean a short time after "fixed or replaced". Yes, i heard yours doing the same.
Thanks so much man! I’m glad you liked the video. And yes, dirty pots are the bane of my existence.
My first pedal ever, I bought it for distort my roland Juno 106 back in 2005, got rid of it quickly, but now I'm into guitar a lot and after see your video definatelly I will buy it again :D
This was actually my second pedal I ever owned. I had a DS-1 and I got this one next. I was a kid and I know infinite more about guitar tone now, but I remember not really digging it. My next pedal after that was the Metalcore pedal. I remember liking that alot more. Nice blast from the past for me.
I used this as a faux Big Muff until I finally got a Big Muff.
I still won't give mine up even if I don't really use it because my friend had one and he died when he was 18 and it reminds me of him
Thanks man!
Comprei deve ter um ano !!!! Tbm é meu drive principal!!! Muito bom na frente de um valvulado doideira mesmo
This thing rocks and no one ever talks about it. A better metal distortion than any pedal out there with "metal" in it's name. I wish I had one when i was just starting out playing through a cheesy practice amp like 20 years ago haha.
tight metal pro is a phenomenal pedal, but generally you are correct , many pedals with Metal in the name suck
Im a multiefx snob back in those days but this pedal is something else.
its my favourite go to dirt pedal. perfect for stoner, doom or anything heavy. as boss marketed this: go big or go home.
I have this and it seems to me like the gain boost is an overdrive essentially. Seems like a different style of clipping than the distortion control.
Oh I own it and I definitely play it. It's the best distortion Boss makes.
Watched this video a few times actually. Great playing and some seriously sick tones out of that MD-2. Any idea how this compares to the HM-2? Keep rockin', dude!
Thanks so much dude! Its a different beast to the HM-2 for sure, a lot thicker and WAY more low end. Its better for a more general distortion sound, but it dosent have that grind that the HM-2 has.
@@strazburgMd-2 you can use with hm-2, md2 eq and boost/dist off and you have amazing sound
well you made me want one dude
Boss should put me on the payroll
@@strazburg dare to dream
Been looking at this pedal for amplified harmonica (basically lead gtr tone)... this was helpful! Underappreciated pedal: mxr blue box. Dug the harmonics in your playing. Cheers.
Thanks man! I have never played a blue box, but I’ve always been interested by it. Maybe it’s time to try it out
I got one cheap years ago and used the hell out of it. I should track down another one.
This was my first pedal ever back in the day
This was my first pedal a little over a decade ago. I wish I never sold it.
It's a great pedal. Still affordable. The low end, and the potential huge volume boost are a distinctive feature; the gain is potentially huge, obviously -- but I use it for classic rock and punk in a covers band and its name kind of suggests it's for metal only. It's really not! But yes, it has the potential to increase in price a lot because it certainly feels like no one else is using it yet it's a very functional, versatile pedal; not a gimmick.
Thanks man. I have one, never used until now. Trying to use it for 80s lead lol, I don't have a lot of money, but I do have the Boss EQ so bringing down the high freq's makes things interesting. But of course digging around trying to use this for...well, cheating.
Mine is over 20 years old and it still works awesome - straight from the Nu Metal Era. Hahaha.
Hey, quick question - what kind of strings do you use for your lower tuning?
favorite converge song
😉😉😉
Put the overdrive after MD-2 then your eyes are opened
Sounds a bit like some Horse The Band guitars around 12:30 🤘
we had used it for bass. worked much better than with guitar (that time).
ty,although inam mostly guitar, i have a few 5 strings... your collabrative comment got me off the fence
The Behringer Heavy Distortion HD300 is a clone of this, for the fraction of the price
16:05 Gila Monster?
Opening riff was rather, very epic. I imagined some female screamo type of vocals over the top.
I am testing a couple of pedals, that I would never have previously looked at. I will have to check this one out. Cool vid Bud!
Thanks mate!
It's very similar to the song "A Single Tear" by Converge
@@TheSPY1997 Yeah the pedal was giving me Converge vibes, so I did my poor man’s homage
@@strazburg I've been eyeing it for some years now, but heard bad stuff about it (won't cut through a band etc). Still, I kinda want one and you ain't helping with that demo, mister!
No volume drop? Ds-1 has a volume drop. What about this one?
It doesn’t have a shit ton of volume, but it has enough if you turn it up. Nothing like the drop on the DS-1
ds1 does not drop the volume. if yours does, its broken.
@JimBoom92 Agreed, the DS1 isn't known for that issue. The OD2 on the other hand.....
I bought one and returned it the same day.
Good for you
@@strazburg - not really, was a waste of time and gas.
You don't know how to use it 😂
@@mariosotaofficial - I took it back so a hack could buy it and pretend they know what tone is. Maybe you bought it?
@regortex3364 so you didn't know how to use it. Sorry, little kid.
FALSE. I've played this pedal.
