Oh I absolutely love audiobooks! They’re so great for when you don’t have the time to visually take in a story from the page. And ya know, not everyone can read, some folks have limited visual acuity etc, so I also love how they make great stories accessible to everyone, and don’t lean into ableist bullshit by only presenting fantastic stories to those who have the privilege of time/ability to read words on pages. Looooove audio-reading 💜💜💜💜💜💜

When is Nettle + Bone chat? I read it and I've got thoughts! 😂 I want to try to catch you live if I can. Lots of things I love mentioned this time - Babel, Never Whistle... (that first story!), Citadel Oracle (it's new to me too), and Endless Oracle. For Heather - I will suggest Ted Chiang as a short story author (scifi); the collection 'Exhalation' is wonderful - zero filler, every story is interesting. He doesn't publish often but when he does, it's gold. The film 'Arrival' is one of his stories.

Sarah, if I can't shuffle a deck, I mix it up by just dealing the cards into 9 piles, combine them in random order, then I pull the first card, and if that's a 7, I count 7 cards to get my second card and so on.

I bought a fancy large magnify-glass for the Shadowscape Tarot and yet still, I haven't reach for it yet lol

@heather If you look in the guidebook for the Movie Tarot at the end of both the aces and the courts section there is a little tiny “starring…” section (or footnote) that lists who’s who. It’s not as in depth as the majors with the quote and all that but it does list them. Hope that helps. I also wish they would have given the courts the same fun write ups as the majors. Shame really. Especially since there was so much room for those extra pages inside that gigantic box 😂. But still I also love that deck. It really brings me joy to see the images.

loved this so much. juli id love you to get your hubby to go through the black cat deck and write down what he thinks the cats are saying so you could annotate the cards with speech.... like really embrace the hubby connection and weird ❤😂

Ok, the funny thing about Juli mentioning the Literary Tarot is that I watched your episode about it, decided not to get it, got into a classics-reading groove the last couple months, and just ordered it! We’ll see how it goes. I may still just have to make my own bookish deck someday with all of the ones that I like best.

I have only been picking a word of the year for three years or so but I do always create a lockscreen with it for my phone and also paste it into the front of my journals/planners…it definitely helps to be seeing it and thinking about it every day. Mine is usually inspired by both my card of the year and something I know I really want to manifest that year because those two factors always end up being very aligned…like for example this is a Chariot year for me as well as a year in which I need to figure out my next life steps so the word I chose is “direction.”

For few years now I am using my card of the year and "The psychic tarot for the heart" (it is an oracle but with majors ) so this year I have the tower no 16... and the word on the card is Rebuilt. I started with the death card (Release) then Temperance (Balance) and last year the devil (master) I love how expansive the words are. What I usually do is after taking out all the other majors I pulled one card every week (sometimes more !) and there is also chakra cards in it (I remove them also but will use if needed) . My word of the year is surprise. I'm working on being more receptive on the inside in looking at the way I view, react, respond to all the big and little surprises life offers up. Most of the time I am calm, measured, taking a moment to think about life's surprises-on the outside. Often on the inside I'm feeling very stressed, anxious, want to work fast, fast, fast. I'm working on having my inside feel calm, measured, even joyful. So I'm trying different things to make this happen. By surprise- I don't mean change, I mean unexpected. Not a tower moment either, more astonished So I journal and work my inside feelings out. I work at reframing the way I'm thinking to a more humorous way of seeing the surprise....humor really works for me. I also try to zoom out in my focus, asking what does this mean in the big picture? I'm not the best at explaining myself here, maybe I would do better after playing the drinking game lol.

I tallied 12 'show up' phrases but admittedly wasn't the most focused. 🍻 My word of the year is 'intentionality' and I feel similarly about this word as I would 'alignment' -- is this deliberate? Is this actively chosen, or a reaction from habit or doing what's easy? For me, 2.5 months in, I've become more aware of things like phone scrolling (and am doing less of it), cultivating better sleep habits & a restful environment, and little environmental things around the house I can improve on -- things it's easy to skip doing when I'm not paying attention.

Thanks for being so honest with your thoughts. There is a lot to be said about coming from a steady practice for many years and THEN sharing. Not saying that it is a requirement by any means but knowing your craft deeply makes you strong in your knowledge and that's something we need to underline more maybe in the community? Edit: I really love your input on 'constructive' criticism, pretty sure I've been on both sides of this and honestly you're right there's no need for it unless someone specifies that's what they want.

Finally got to see this today. Very good points made here. "I change my mind all the time", I can certainly relate to that!

Dawn Michelle said something to the effect that our practices shouldn't feel like homework. That really stuck with me. Our practices are meant to support us, not feel like something we're obligated to do or one more thing we need to check off our to do list. Taking breaks is absolutely normal. We only have so much energy. Sometimes other things in life just take up all we have, and that's ok. Doing these spiritual things takes energy, mental, physical, emotional, spiritual energy. I live with energy limiting chronic health issues. The average person doesn't realize how much energy doing mental/emotional or even spiritual stuff uses, let alone physical energy. "Doing" spiritual practices can take a lot more even physical energy than most people realize, just doing the things. Sometimes it's all just more than we have. The wonderful thing is we can always come back to our practices. We can change and adapt our practices to meet us where we are, in the moment. Our spiritual practices should NOT feel like homework... 💖

I really enjoyed this SO much and I'm so glad you decided to do a vr to this one. I always appreciate hearing your perspectives on things like this. I TOTALLY agree about authenticity vs content creation... particularly with the conflation between authenticity and accessibility. I have to remember that I don't have to share every tiny little thing and this is especially challenging when it's being demanded of you but boundaries in all relationships is important and no less so in parasocial/social media relationships... and I say that as someone who's relatively comfortable being a (mostly) open book online.

I totally agree that when I’ve been in similar situations, reminding myself that this isn’t the first time I’ve had a slump in my practices is one of the most helpful things…just reaffirming that mindset that a feeling of disconnection is just a thing we all go through and it doesn’t represent a failure or signify a lack of commitment-I feel like the worst thing you can possibly do when the stress of life is causing a slump is to let the slump become yet another source of stress! I loved your tips for what you do in these situations to rebuild that connection when you’re ready. And, as always, sending tons of love your way as you navigate everything that’s been going on…it has truly been A LOT. 💖💖💖🫂🫂🫂

What you were saying about when life is tough (understatement for everything you've been going through) it seems like we should or would lean into our spirituality. It just doesn't always work this way though for some of us. This really resonated with me. I have felt during times of sorrow or overwhelm my spiritual practice is so very far away. I do or I should say did feel alone with that distance. Going back, defining or redefining my beliefs and practice, getting back to basics, journaling is such sound advice. Thank you for talking about this. Thank you for sharing such personal information. I agree 100% life is just hard at times. Take care of yourself.

Thank you for sharing. I was exhausted listening to your life of juggling career, studies, and interests. Wowzers. And I know what it's like to (sell and then) purchase a home without feedback, as it were. Sometimes you just want someone to chime in with an opinion (rarely, but sometimes lol). I remember when your dear friend passed -- just a month before my bestie of 48 years died suddenly. Takes a while. I do have a deck whose entire purpose in my collection is to speak with him.
