Those terminals are based on remote echo i.e. when you press a key he letter goes to the computer that sends it back to the screen. There were also systems based on local echo. That is the letter went directly to the screen. Then when you pressed Enter then the entire line or even the screen is sent to the computer to be processed. That way each terminal did not constantly bother the computer. Of course in such a system any arcade game would be impossible. Also in the the Enter and the Return were entirely different keys. The Return just moved the cursor.

My introduction to the internet was via dumb terminal connected to a mini-computer running UNIX or VAX. I could download images and binary files that were uuencoded into an ASCII stream, basically pages of text gibberish, then converted the ASCII text back into the binary file using "uudecode" or other similar fashion.

I hope if they do a full size version of it, that they do the 800 or 130xe with a proper keyboard. Like you, I was on Commodores (and Apples in school), so an Atari 8 bit computer would be new to me. I have used the Atari ST, but that's a different beast altogether.

I can't believe you didn't demo Star Raiders. Best game for the Atari 400/800. Back in 1980 I worked at a computer store. We hooked up an Atari 800 to a video projector and stereo. When we fired it up and the guys from the shops on both sides of our store came over to see what was going on.

Schools back then: "Take out your text books, we're doing a quiz. You may not use calculators to help." Schools now: "Give me your damned phone, no cheating!" Computers then: topped out a 640k, BASIC was accessible (version dependent) and you could actually do something with it, namely write a program. Computers now: No imagination unless your name is Apple and you have $6000 to spare. need at least 16gb for most games. Insults then: "F@g! fatty, jumbo" Insults now: (N word bomb followed by various sundry expletives that would make Eminem blush) Music then: "Cassettes are complete crap, CD's are where it's at. Vinyl will soon die" Music now: "That Vinyl is solid fucking gold worth a billion dollars. Don't touch my cassettes but you can have these scratched CD's" Commercials then: Informative if somewhat annoying, classic and funny Commercials now: "Hello, this is Lume" Videogames now: "ugh download times...hurry up! Hey it's loading...DAMN IT!" Videogames then: "Mom, I want a sega genesis" "You already have an NES" "But this system is 16 bit" "...what does that even mean?" "it means sonic and sonic will never have a bad game" *me, an intellectual*: "HAHAHAHHAAHHAHAAHAHHA!"

  • @TombRaider1996forever

they probably just left keys unassigned to be utilized later in design. but they had to be keys that fit in with the rest. like along the bottom row or where F9,F10,F11,F12 are. so when they decided they needed arrow keys they couldn't just redesign the molds and PCBs; so they were forced to be inline. and because it's bad to begin with, deciding on an order, probably felt like, no one really knew which was better.

  • @TombRaider1996forever

ok, so I have a PS3 and I gave a Tool CD that is a "Super-CD" but I have never figured out how to play it as a Super-CD in my PS3. (the PS3 can play Super-CD)

Ehhh, VHS is a very interesting piece of old technology. Although these days I’d advise people to be careful buying VHS, if one is looked after well and not thrashed around it’ll most likely play just like a DVD. However some (lots of ex-rentals) would have degraded real badly (some VCRs might even kick up a stink playing them). I have a VHS which is at least 28 years old and it still plays like new. But altogether VHS is unpredictable and if your system mucks up you could end up with chewed tapes, even damaged tapes. Altogether VHS aren’t as bad as what they make out to be.

The 6502 was the junk chip we got, when really the 65c816 was the chip we deserved... a 6502 that could address up to 16mb! A good example of releasing a product too soon before it was polished more, dooming it ultimately to failure versus the x86 architecture. From what I remember, the 6502 was a rip off of some other chip at the time, I think the 6800. The 6502 copied 56 of the 72 instructions of the 6800. Sad to see the old guy at the end saying the main market for it now was... retro hobbists. Like watching Bill Herd relive the glory days at Commodore on a tree branch that died that are gone forever. That being said, it was my first CPU. It's strength is it is approachable and mostly... from an assembly point of view... easy to understand.

I'm a bit disappointed that the membrane keyboard is non functional on this one - since the 400 Mini is about the same size as a Sinclair ZX81, there is no good reason why thay couldn't have included a working membrane keyboard on this one, which would have improved its usefulness a lot. Obviously it would be a bit fiddly to use but it would have been very cool indeed (I'm sure the hardware modding community will soon be adding this functionality, probably with an aftermarket membrane and an Arduino or some similar way of interfacing it to the usb) Even so, a very cool product, but they REALLY missed a fantastic opportunity with that keyboard. Wouldn't it be great if manufacturers actually sold fully functional products instead of relying on the community to add the finishing touches? Then again it's been a long time since games were sold in anything close to a finished form...

MP3 players and camera recorders are still very useful today: With a camera recorder you get with 100/200 euro the same camera quality a 2000 euro phone has, and you don't have to compromise on the specs of the phone for a good camera. And with MP3s, you don't have to take up phone storage space either EDIT: Forgot to say that a 200 euro camera will last you a decade at least Mine did
