Bicycle Touring Sicily? Mafia, roads, landscapes, society, climates - Sicily explained by sicilians
What is Sicily like? What are the roads, climate, people and landscapes like? And the mafia?
With its 25,711 square kilometers (9,927 square miles), Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and the largest of Italy's twenty political regions. It's about the same size as the US states of Massachusetts or New Hampshire, so by any standards, it's not a small island. The coastal circumnavigation alone measures over 1000 km, but I have avoided the easier coastline, to deepen my knowledge of the interior of the island, the mountains and the small towns.
Not yet very well known as a cycling destination, tourism on the island is still a growing business, as is the attention paid to this place, right in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea.
In this 32-minute video I visit all nine historic provinces, without avoiding the mountains (including the king, Mount Etna) or the infamous cities, like Corleone.
Follow me on this journey, halfway between a documentary and a cycling diary, to perhaps understand something more about this renowned island, and perhaps, why not, to find out more about your next trip.

    Great video of Sicily. We loved touring the island, though we did not go up Etna. Milazzo, Novara di Sicilia, Giardini Naxos, then trains to Syracuse and Modica. After that we rode all along the southern coast to Sciacca, north to Segesta via Gibellina Vecchia*, and on to Mondello and Palermo. Always great respect from drivers on the roads, and very welcoming locals. * Our only wild camp on Sicily was at the huge art installation there.

    Hi there,,i love your narrative and your history knowledge of america, and yes america in general (except those whose lives in big city😊) the suburban folks are more friendly, kind and helpful towards strangers they even give you some cash, offering you place to rest, inviting you to be their guest, etc when ask for help they will absolutely without a doubt would help you(although yes there might be some rude folks too,it depends what races you are,i'm asian so they treat me slightly different than european cyclotourist) i'm too a cyclist myself,i did my solo BAA in 2019 from end of july till mid september,,i bikes from east to west just like you, however the route i'm taking is mostly on Rail Trail, such as;C&O canal-GAP-Three River-Montour-little miami(Ohio)-kathy trail(missouri)-Cowboy trail(Nebraska) in Valentine,NE Cowboy Trail Terminus i following mostly backroads and farmroads all the way up to Teton Pass in Idaho, then head towards Town of Three Sister it was an amazing route scenery and fascinating landscape,an experience once in a lifetime,,i finished my tour in Florence,Oregon in just 52days,,i slept in motel, campground and did many sthealt camp,,thru out my journey i encountered many kind and nice peoples and also many close call esp in Kansas Highway😊,,that's why i choose my route majority on Rail Trails rather than riding on Highway,America is absolutely beautiful not just in pictures but in real life,i urge some of you whose never visit america, you got to go and do it while you're still able,,,and great job Mr.Vlady on your amazing journey hopes to see your next adventure here in Indonesia come visit and ride my home country,,here's another whole new level you will be amazed by our lush green forest and hundreds of active volcanoes and large bodies water too, diversity peoples and languages.😊

      I really appreciate your comment - it is totally different to see my video when you have done the trip yourself! I also did C&O, Katy trail etc! And I have been in Florence too, after Eugene! So, you know what it feels like. Only 52 days is great. I wasn’t fast. It must be fantastic also to experience Indonesia ❤️ - yes, some American was rude while gassing me with their pick-up truck. The most of the time, they are nice. They understand you and the situation and they are super helpful. In remote areas they are not even use to see foreigners, so to them my cycling clothes looked weird. But as you said, wasn’t difficult the social part. I’d love to cycle there again, not the same route, but another coast to coast.

      Are you asking if a 12 speed bike can tackle climbs? The answer is yes; it does a better job than my Tiagra 2x (20 speeds). On the contrary, it won’t get as fast as a road bike because of the gear ratio. For that you would better opt for a 2by.

      Hello hello. According to the CANYON measurement page, I could ride both XS and S, as I’m 172cm tall. The XS has a 27.5 inch tyre. I am fine with the S. I have tried it on gravel, long distance on road, uphills, packing etc.

      That bike was also among those considered by me. Beside the characteristics and the components, the design matters too. I have decided for a canyon grizl for the mounts/eyelets and the tyre clearance.

    Hi Vlady, I use an app called peak finder that provides altitude and names of the mountains in your sourrandings. It's super easy to use and for free! This is because I'm always wondering about the altitude and names of the peaks when I go hiking and yes, maybe this might help in your vids :) Grazie per i tuoi vids!

    Hey! Thank you for the video, it was really helpful for me. You mention that the bike is priced “around 1600eur”, but right now on Canyon website this model is 1750eur. Did the price change?

    • @vladywashere
      @vladywashere Před 2 měsíci

      Let me check - a few months ago was 19.999 SEK, translated to € was between 1.600/1.700 euro. Yes, the price is now a little up, currently in Sweden is 20,499 SEK. But in Germany is still 1.699 €. You can change the region and see the prices.

    Outstanding video! I am an American cyclist and have done several tours myself, but this one is something else! I would like to do the transamerica ride from west to east, but once I clear Colorado, I would be too bored. Maybe one day, but not at this point in my life.

      Glad it was helpful! Unboxing a Canyon is very easy. Just the front wheel, seat tube and handlebar. I am not into tutorials. Right now I am touring with this bike, so I’ll probably review the bike once again at the end of the season.

      I see your worries. It was very scary, many times. Maximum focus is required. Consider that in Europe, roads are often smaller and shoulders too.
