Scag Walk Behind Mower Engine Replacement (do this yourself and save money)
Our Scag SWZT 48” walk behind mower needs an engine replacement. Very simple fix, I highly recommend doing this yourself and not paying a repair shop.

    I have a 1995 721d2. Engine runs great. Deck is wore out. Would love to find a powerfold deck or know what needs modded for the powerfold.

      Pretty sure the 721 has the Gemini transaxle and I don’t believe there are remote controls for the power fold. Now the later 7 series had an electric actuator for power fold which could possibly be bolted up. Last actuator I bought was $600 and that was in 2014 so I’m sure they cost more now

    Idk if you still have the boat years later but those motors have a tendency to blow the top crank seal, I’ve replaced 3 across the 4 omc25’s I’ve had from that era, after replacing the motor starts easier and doesn’t hit and miss the top cylinder it always runs on both

    I learned to rub a folded brown paper bag through the points, not just the sand paper. Sanding makes the surface of the points rough and it will burn faster, you will have to redo or replace points.

      If you can look at the 481 in person I would measure the mounting holes and the shaft size to see if they match

      Pull the recoil starter off of the engine and see if you can roll the engine over with a wrench. I had that happen before and the starter was rubbing the engine cowling.

    The 900 series is very poorly designed and if you like working on your mower this is your machine. If you just want to mow go with 700 series. Mine 900 is broke more than running and I just mow my grass. 200 hours and been in the shop for months! My 700 was bulletproof, stay away from the 900 series.

    Someone just gave me a SWM-48 that was not in running order. It doesn't appear to be seized and I don't see any blown cylinders (it's still sitting in my F150). I'm trying to figure out where to even start ... I have a DR Field mower that I replaced the engine on, but I can't seem to get the wiring right to keep it running so it's sitting in my garage while I decide on the next steps for that one. So right now, the decision I need to make is which one to work on first. I've downloaded the SCAG manual and I'm looking through that first since I don't even know how to see if it should run (an older lady gave it to me and said her (presumably) teenage son had said the motor was bad ... no, I don't want to just trust that so I'm going to do a little troubleshooting first. If anyone has a troubleshooting flow chart for a SCAG SWM, please post it or send me a copy!

      Oh, and I should have added that I coincidentally was given a Husq riding lawnmower with a 26 HP Kohler motor (the mower had a bad transmission and was stupidly expensive to get fixed according to my father-in-law and, since he knows I'll try to fix anything, it's another thing in my garage ... practically killed myself getting it off my truck because he hadn't mentioned that he'd disconnected the brakes!

      Is it a 727? They had the Eaton Gemini trans axle. Pretty easy fix 9/10 it’s usually the check valves on top back out and let fluid bypass the pumps

  • @donk499
    @donk499 Před 2 lety

    Unfortunately, that flywheel nut should not have come off so easily, it was not properly torqued on there, the flywheels usually don't pop off like that either. You really should use the proper OMC puller tool. Not torquing the nut sufficiently could cause the flywheel to shift on the tapers and shear the key, then you will lose spark. The tapers will be damaged also. Over torquing the nut will cause the flywheel tapers to spread, then the flywheel will never stay in place. I'm not saying we all haven't "cheated" at this operation before, but it is important to realize what can happen if the flywheel is improperly torqued. Makes a mess out of the crank and flywheel tapers, shears the key as well.

    I think I know what happened. The teflon tape you had on the gas hose threads got into the valve and stopped up the works. Never put teflon tape on welder gas threads.

    Tell your friend to clean the water ways out get replacement impeller check, clean/replace the thermostat, clean the carb put a new set of plugs in, put some new oil in the gearbox. That'll make it more reliable. He may wish to adjust the trim as it stern is too low in the water

    Very interesting video. I have a near match to that motor and just finished rebuilding my carb to get her ready for this 2022 season in Ontario. It's satisfying to fix something like that and almost as satisfying as watching a video of someone fixing something like that. I have had mercury 25s as well as the Evinrude and our Evinrude 25 is the most reliable one yet. Thanks for showing us the trick for getting at the points. I've not had to do that on mine yet. Your buyer is going to be very happy with that boat and motor combination for a long time!
