Hi! This CZcams channel is geared towards appreciating nature, wildlife, camping, cooking, honeybees, and even a little travel is thrown in. Also raising chickens and fighting off predators! Experience my next adventure into the outdoors as we go hiking, foraging for mushrooms, taking care of the chickens and honeybees. Do some mudlarking on the river, and maybe even start to build a little cabin in the forest.

Hive inspection before pulling honey supers 2
Checking out the hives before pulling some frames to spin and give back to the big hive and discovered one has issues and is about to collapse. The design of this hive isn't great for more than two supers. Its collapsing due to weight and how it's put together. Will have to dismantle this one and see if it can be repaired since there are no supply stores open nearby.

Those look like rat snakes to me, they're good to have around the farm as they kill small rodents. Of course you wouldn't want them near any chickens though.
Exactly. They do love eggs though. We only relocate them out of the coop area, and they do return, but better than having rattle snakes around.

corn snake, sometimes called red rat snake and not poisonous.
Rat snakes are usually easy to pick up, and they have very beautiful color variations!

Looks close to the Eastern Towhee that visits my deck for peanuts every day. Beautiful bird! Is that one in the sparrow family as well?
Its a bit larger than the sparrow and is in the cardinal family.

A Red Shouldered Hawk is too small to catch a chicken! It's the Red Tailed Hawks that you need to watch out for, or perhaps even Coppers Hawks. I've never seen any Red Shouldered Hawks catch a chicken. These hawks are barely hungry enough to catch a medium sized snake.
We do see Red Tailed Hawks and I believe Coopers. When any of them are around the chickens don't even want to leave the chicken run. I believe this one is why we don't see a lot of squirrels around lately. :-)

Beautiful job! I have the exact same tent. I built wooden half walls on the inside and reinforced the roof so that I could keep it up all year long.

The mussel probably came from the creek or maybe brought over by an animal. Yes that was a piece of a turtle shell too. We've seen several turtles around but usually alive. :-)

I know what you mean. I learned my lesson about using thick bacon on top, though the bacon on the bottom was crispy.
