Psychologist Explains How to Process & End Shame About Our Bodies
In this video, Dr. Rachel Goldman (a licensed psychologist and clinical assistant professor in the department of Psychiatry at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine) sits down with Oprah to discuss body image and shame - and how we can begin to process both and move to a healthier, happier place of self-acceptance.
She says, âWe have to tell ourselves to focus on what is in our control. I can't control what you're going to tell me, but I can focus on how I interpret it, how I perceive it, and am I going to take it home with me or am I going to throw it in the trash and let it go?â
The moment was part of âMaking the Shift,â which aired on May 9 to a live studio audience. The 3-hour program unpacks the multifaceted, preconceived notions we have about weight, from the profound impact diet culture has had on our society to how we can reframe harmful narratives surrounding our weight and our bodies. The conversation - featuring Rebel Wilson, Busy Philipps, Amber Riley, and many others - brought together individuals, communities and medical experts to bridge the science of âweightâ with a new outlook that brings the health and wellbeing of our bodies into focus.

Celebrated author/sociologist/author Tressie McMcMillan Cottom says that to reframe the conversation about weight, you have to change the language in which we talk about it: âThere's a word I think I would love to introduce to our conversation. We've been talking about how to name and label things, and that word is stigma. So there's the shame we feel, and then there's the stigma that we label ...

Micheal Obama is a phenomenal and a humble woman
I was a part of the virtual audience for this event and I can honestly say, it was amazing to watch. To hear that you are not alone in this fight to just be normal was incredible. The chat was also amazing. I really wish everyone was able to get approved for the medicine because at the moment there are a lot of people( including me) who have conditions that would improve or even completely disappear. Since we don't have type two diabetes, the other diseases that can also kill us but would be better with weight loss, doesn't seem to worry the insurance companies at all.
Looking great girls đđđ°đȘđđŸ
This video has helped me tremendously. Iâve been overweight most of my life, including my childhood. Iâve always felt âless thanâ because of my weight. Iâve joined and quit Weight Watchers at least 25 times and Iâm 64 years old. I reached goal weight in 1982 with WW, but gained 100+ pounds since then. It wasnât until last year, my doctor advised I have metabolic syndrome and that is why I am not losing weight. I tried Rybelsus last year, lost weight, but had horrible side effects and quit taking it after 6 months. My doctor recently prescribed Mounjaro for me and I am hoping it will finally make a difference. I rarely leave the house as Iâm embarrassed about how I look and feel. I look into the mirror and donât know how this happened and barely recognize myself. It wasnât until I watched the ABC Oprah special, it was my AHA moment. Itâs not my fault, I have a disease. I need to treat this disease with compassion and learn how to love myself for the first time. After finishing this video, I am a bit frightened that I wonât be able to get the Mounjaro due to shortages. I will continue to watch this video as itâs the first time in my life, I now know I have an illness and will be treating my obesity as a disease in which I will use every tool available in the toolbox to fight this.
Taking away in-person workshops in my location has destroyed the community that had been so supportive and encouragement. It is impossible to drive 100 miles one way for a meeting. I tried several virtual meetings and have never felt a connection to the members. I have tried sharing and listening. Itâs just not the same as sitting across a table or next to the same people week after week. I have been a Weight Watchers member since about 1987. I made Lifetime in 1989. WW has come a long way in their approach to weight health but some changes has helped some people and some changes have hurt some people. I have not been able to attend an in-person meeting since March, 2020, when our meetings were closed.
My mother had me in weight watchers at 12 yrs old, all the women in my life except 1 used to tell me they would take me on a shopping spree if I lost weight, I lost it n gained it back, mom took all my new cloths backđ
Oprah is lame but The Rock is a special person.
Thank you, Oprah, for not making us watch endless commercials during this video! †Thank you for this extremely informative video!
I am 40 and am now coming to really know âmeâ, still not quite there entirely with the whole self acceptance piece yet but Iâm getting there. This interview I could watch every single month and get something new out of itđ
With Oprah ill just be listening whooo ammm iii whoo ammm iiiâ€â€đđ
It's interesting to know how they come up with days some are straight forward others how
As a WW member, I've seen zero changes since this conversation. It's still the same ole jargon discussions during the workshops with members still talking good and bad foods, and the coaches not reformatting that discussion. I was really hopeful to see some shifts occur around the conversation but so far, nada.
Katie Sturino, you are a national treasure! Your work resonates with so many of us. Thank you for being you!
Healthy thin people do get special treatment especially if youâre pretty.
brilliant. we need to change that people are mistreated for the choices they make about their body.
This was a great discussion. Thank you to Weight Watchers & Oprah for doing this.
How is she endorsing weight watchers while taking ozempic shots? Why do people allow celebrities to lie to their faces? This BS hero worship makes me ill.
Fast foods, factory produced over procesed food, huge portions in resaurants, sedentary life styles, not educating children about nutrition. The list goes on. Look at the difference in people in the last century before all of the above. Obesity rates have surged in that time. We have shifted in the way we get our food and how we spend our time. Easy quick fixes and less activity. How many children come home from school and imediately have access to snacks then sit infront of a game or tv till bed?
I wish people would stop using any tipe of drug or diet to lose weight. It is not a long term solution. Calorie deficit and training your mind to start exercising is the only way. Stop telling people you lost the weight in a healthy way. Living healthy starts in the kitchen not the drug store. Stop making them rich
She still has it đđœ
btw i love your look! :o)
wow! I know i am late but this is crazy! I love you Stephanie even more! :o)
The moon †show your children look outside
Faithâ€
Love her but I believe she should be honest if you used Ozempic or not.
I am glad this is healing for many. Itâs a geat conversation.
Sima thank you for so much for taking weight watchers into the future! We are here to support you in fighting to keep our ww community strong and will endure many many more decades because of you and taking on the role of ceo that must just be such a hard position. We love you Sima!
Dr Tressie McMillan Cottom, everything you said was superb. I canât wait to read and hear more of your voice in this and many conversations. Thank you.

Oh wow! What a great discussion đ thank you for sharing
What do we say about women who have binge eating issues Who weigh 500 lbs we're saying we should not make a choice for someone else but clearly just like anorexia could kill someone so can being morbidly obese we should never shame anybody but the same time you cannot tell me that somebody that's 500 lb is not killing themselves every day with what they're eating. What do we say to women who are in this situation if we're sending the message now that you should just love whatever body you're in. Don't agree with shaming anyone or judging everyone is obese I have been there I have done it all but at the same time I don't think telling people it's okay to be 500 lb and not do anything to try and change that is okay either
Next special. How do we change âThe Systemâ. Dealing with insurance companies that donât cover these medications or doctors that donât recognize this as a disease is HUGE. Itâs one thing to talk about all of this but we all have to live in the reality that right now this is a privileged medication.
Iâm a young woman in shape woman and Iâve noticed people treat me differently and I honestly hate that. We should treat everyone the same, no matter the age or outward appearance.
No respect for Winfrey.
Why?
Weight watchers realising that big pharma is about to take over their jobs so they made a pivot. This is not about being caring, it's a sales pitch for a rebrand. Funny how no one is talking about the harm the drugs are doing to so many bodies. They care about the harm personal accountability does to people that regain the weight but not the damage that drugs do to people's bodies. It's all about the money.
I already got Worthy.
I am so happy this is on CZcams. I was so traumatized by my body weight in elementary school and middle school I have never put on a swimsuit đ©±
Wait till you turn 60...
Bauer POWER!
So viscous.
Didn't she leave Weight Watchers?
Most Doctors donât Listen. They also just treat symptoms. Doctors need more nutrition training. Itâs not thee food Pyramid.
Who is she?
After listening to the livestream â making the shiftâ, I made the decision to quit WW for good. I am done with it! â when you know better, you do better.â. WW has found another way to make money. Thanks to my lifetime yo-yo dieting and all the different WW programs over 25 plus years, I am at my heaviest weight. I was shamed as a community meeting leader for not being able to maintain the ideal weight range and told to suck it up, try harder and use more will power. It had very little to do with will power. It was my body reacting to the yearly â new programsâ; which werenât improving anything just going from â low fatâ programs to point systems to green, blue and purple and tracking all the extra points. I am tired of all of this. Good bye WW!
