From Waitress to Billion-Dollar Entrepreneur: How IT Cosmetics’ Founder Learned to Love Herself

In 2016, entrepreneur/author Jamie Kern Lima sold IT Cosmetics to L’Oreal for $1.2 billion, cementing her spot on Forbes’ Richest Self-Made Women List. However, beforehand, when she was raising money from investors, one of them told her, “I don’t think women will buy cosmetics from someone who looks like you, with your body and your weight.” (He later admitted he was wrong, giving her a “real ‘Big Mistake!’ Pretty Woman moment.”)
However, this incident, and many before and after, caused her to examine her self-worth - and just how much her lingering self-doubt had cost her throughout her life, In this segment, Jamie sits down with Oprah to share advice for others who might be holding themselves back because of their weight or overall self-image.
The moment was part of “Making the Shift,” which aired on May 9 to a live studio audience. The 3-hour program unpacks the multifaceted, preconceived notions we have about weight, from the profound impact diet culture has had on our society to how we can reframe harmful narratives surrounding our weight and our bodies.
