The Cubs' playoff chances are going, going, almost gone
The Cubs refuse to concede that it’s over - and there are still things to play for - but getting swept out of Cleveland damaged the team’s diminishing postseason probability. But with the way this up-and-down season has gone, a relatively easy stretch of the schedule could pull them right back into the playoff race.
Sahadev Sharma and Patrick Mooney of The Athletic also bring you the latest on Rockies catcher Elias Díaz and whether the Cubs would see that as an upgrade - or if they would similarly dump players onto waivers if things don’t turn around fast.

Wrapping up the trade deadline: Was this a missed opportunity for the Cubs?

Jed Hoyer’s front office wasn’t a traditional buyer or a pure seller at this year’s trade deadline. Sahadev Sharma and Patrick Mooney talk through that strategy and assess the deals that brought in Isaac Paredes and shipped out Mark Leiter Jr. There is a certain rationale to what the Cubs did at this moment, but just because it made sense doesn’t mean it’s going to work. Fans don't care about him yelling more except at umpires continuing to screw this team & Seiya in particular, that is a part of his job regardless of his conflict avoiding personality!! We are tired of postgame interviews where he's captain obvious, giving politically correct answers that dont call it like it is. Or not even answering vital questions about in-game decisions like Merryweather for a second inning the 1st game vs. Cleveland when hes looked terrible since coming back from IL & hadn't pitched 2 innings since April 5th. With Lopez up & ready top btw after tieing the game that inning.. (This is just the most recent example) We want the manager to defend his best fucking hitter & act pike hes pissed about results cuz he SHOULD BE!!!

The Cubs have won 42% of games not started by Shota. The idea that they can just nibble around the edges and become a contender is laughable. Being at the back end of "in the hunt" is not close. They aren't as ambitious as LA, NY, Philly, or San Diego, and not as well run as Milwaukee, Arizona, or Atlanta. The offense has not pop. The rotation has gotten 4 quality starts out of Assad and 3 out of Hendricks. The bullpen is unreliable for the second straight year. I think that means a lot of room for improvement, all while hoping Shota doesn't come back to earth next year. You don't have to repeat what the front office is telling you when it doesn't match reality.

Suzuki continues to prove how his brain is non functioning. The book on the Ump? Pitcher friendly. First pitch? Right down the middle. He takes it as he always does. Then he takes a called strike 3 like he always does. He is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO stupid. If you lead the league in taking called strike 3 and many times the pitch is an inch too high or an inch too low? Do NOT TAKE that pitch. But no, he's stupid so he takes it, then whines and mumbles back to the bench. As he always does. He really is dumb. And Craig is too dumb to ORDER him to swing at close pitches.

It's mostly some more 'nice' players... Cub young players improving is prob Jed's strategy

Cubs were back under luxury tax for 2017 season.... Tom complained about 'dead money' luxury tax penalty of 3.8mil after payrolls of 98-104 mil in 2012-2014 than only 135mil for 2015 w all those extra playoff games.... there should have been 200mil set aside to cover a slightly higher penalty to make sure Cub had a real Fowler replacement(or got creative and kept him) and an 8th inning set-up man to go w Wade Davis instead of trading Paredes and Jeimer for Justin Wilson at the deadline.... actually cost Tom more money and good will from fans... that's where the fans were really watching to see if Tom would panic and overreact and he did... Laura complains publicly about 'dead money' also instead of thinking about it as part of the payroll bec it only goes up 4mil per year which is stupid...

In a perfect world, Jed Hoyer and Carter Hawkins are immediately fired at season's end, the Cubs hire a competant team president and gm who are not in house, Ian Happ, Nico Hoerner, Chris Morel, Miguel Amaya, Cody Bellinger and Seiya Susuki are all traded, the scouting department does their job and looks for available players that hit at least .275 with RISP, and the Cubs should sign at least 3 of them along with a legitimate power hitter, the bullpen should be completely revamped and a legitimate closer should be signed. With all the dead money and expired contracts coming off the books next season, none of this should be a problem. And more important than people think, allow Craig Counsell to hire his own dam coaching staff. The Cubs signed one of the best managers in baseball just to stick him with a team full of fringe players and coaches that he didn't even choose, as if he was a miracle worker. NO manager would be successful with this team.
