Welcome!
My name is Kramer and I'm an actor and medieval enthusiast, with the goal of creating an aesthetic lifestyle so immersive that we can all feel like a characters in our favorite genre.
As members of the community of the sword, we appreciate Medieval Realism in our books, tv shows, movies and games.
So as an actor myself, the following questions bare answering:
What would life in a fantasy/medieval world actually be like? What is practical? What can we copy into out own lives? And what of what we see on the silver screen is an utter disaster in real life? Through Experimental Archeology, re-creation and research; actors, writers, dungeon masters, can bring a heightened level of realism and immersion to our chosen mediums and with anachronism, we can bridge the worlds of fantasy and reality.
If you like swords, armor, fantasy, (pretty much anything that would make you a Dungeons and Dragons nerd), I hope you enjoy my content.

I have to be really honest with myself about LARP
I've done some soul searching. The fantasy class that fits me best for DnD or Larp, is a Bard. And I am ready to embrace that. Because nothing else has worked.

9:00 I want to preface by saying I 100% agree with "magic made people technologically illiterate" Technology would still progress, but far slower. You actually speak the exact words that made me do a double take. "Why _____ when a MAGE can _____" A Mage. Not everyone is a mage, and if I know people like I do, a large percentage of the non-magic-using population would work to replicate and try to be *better* than the magic can do. I know I would, as a shitty blacksmith and leatherworker who can't use magic in the real world, I'd 100% be working to make my stuff better than magic can make things. In fact, I'd wager there would be large groups dedicated to one-upping magic all over the place. 13:23 and you even hit on some of my thoughts exactly. To be perfectly honest I'm not sure humanity would survive magic users. *someone* would go way too far and open up a portal to Sag A* and destroy the solar system. 16:26 JRR himself doesn't convince me that "pipe weed" isn't just weed. I know he specifically said it wasn't, but honestly...
Judging purely by the level of autistic detail in the comments on this video, this is obviously a good channel for thoughtful commentary and discussion.
Eh... Armor didn't die with the first arquebuses. In fact, full plate harnesses developed alongside the arquebus and both were developed around the same time, with the first examples of each being around 1400. Full plate harnesses continued to evolve greater sophistication until their battlefield use sharply declined during the early and especially mid 1600s. Even then, however, it is not so much that armor disappeared as that it focused into increasingly tight protection of the head and vital organs. Only more modern weaponry truly removed armor from the equation entirely, but the modern need for shrapnel resistance and the improvements in materials science, as well as the reduction in power of modern rifle rounds, are making armor increasingly viable again.
"working in tandem with magic" See this is why I disagree with the "technology wouldn't develop with magic." Technology would develop to exploit magic wherever it can. Because the simple fact is that if a wizard can do something once per day but a peasant with a magical fruit or crystal and some nifty piece of kit made by a clever tinkerer can do that same thing, in most settings there are an awful lot more peasants than wizards.
People didn't wash their hair as often. Women could brush it in the morning, and then braid/put it up, and cover it. Just to keep it clean longer. At least here, that was a thing. Washed our hair once a week, on Laurdag/Saturday. This was the only day not named after a god, instead it was the day people would bathe, or "lauga" oneself. And what is ridiculous is up to the eye of the beholder. I personally still believe those long pointy shoes were mostly used at court, or for fancy get-togethers, not for travel or daily work. Too impractical. People wore impractical when they had money to flaunt, be it on themselves or on their servants, who then had to learn to wear the dang things. Though I come from Norway, and am more used to wool and linen clothes when I go to viking markets. Though the middle ages happened later in Norway, and here we have separate markets for viking and the middle ages. Very interesting video! I like those this gives food for thought.^^
But what if better technology improves the magic?
This is a genuine design problem I'm having with my fantasy story. On the one hand, the villains are sadistic and hateful aristocrats and having them dress like actual friggin clowns while acting like they are the absolute pinnacle of human excellence and everyone else is subhuman trash who God hates would be a wonderful way to satirize the awful power structures that prop up people like this. On the other hand, I want the audience to, like, take them seriously as a threat and I'm not sure how I feel about the idea of drawing a dude committing horrendous war crimes while wearing pointy shoes and a giant codpiece.
"Do we want it to be?" (If yes WhFRP and DSA exist and may be your best bet.)
Where do people find places to LARP?
I think that's a big deal with larp. Unlike videogames or tabletop games, you are not superhumanly skilled and therefore, you are not the main character. You are a normal guy with a sword.
Hey I live very near to where you did this😂
20:14 theory: your oven is fine, but since they usually work by turning on until a temperature sensor (probably bimetal strip) turns it off, a d it kicks back on when the temperature gets below a point. To even out this temperature shifting, place the leather inside some sort of container. Personally I prefer to get a few aluminum serving pans (like the big catering ones) and put the leather inside, make a small aluminum foil ball to make an empty space, and put another on top and bottom of the leather. Basically two pans joined with the leather inside, a small air gap, and two more pans stretched around. This will even out any temp swings, and also add a bit of a delay to any sort of overheating.
6:56 correction: you have a novelty lamp for use around the house that has a chuckle-worthy storybehind it.
it's not as much that gothic castles did not exist in the middle ages... it's that butresses, pinnacles and spires never belonged on a castle anyway ! google schloss Reinhardstein in Belgium or the chateau de Vianden in Luxembourg, great authentic examples of an actual gothic castle in the middle ages.
Sometimes I feel like what Frodo says at the end of this video as I see the destruction of beloved franchises, division amongst people, and our society becoming more perverse, but then I remember what Sam says and it keeps me going. I swear we’re all walking through life carrying the ring to Mount Doom.
fought SCA in very similar armour 10+ years. Paired down to minimums + chainmail the last 10.
You need go do cardio in armour.
If I wanted to fight with a strapon?
I've been righting a medieval fantasy for years now. I got varying cultures with different levels of civilisation/ sophistication and magic laced throughout their cultural systems, some having antique to medieval inspiration. The goal being to make them different, special but to even the playing field every time so as to not make these high mediaval bloopers. Wish me luck.
I have done historical research on the topic myself, The most historically accurate period of Fantasy media would be the 15th century actually, it had firearms, but fashion design and society reforms were not complete and science-driven ideas had not yet reformed society from that medieval type of society, and there were many historical wars, that could have worked as a backdrop of the fantasy movie during the period because of religious division between catholic and protestants.
If you want to dress up like a high ranking viking there's one somewhat cost effective trick. At the time Eastern Rome was still very much the centre of wealth and culture in Europe and this impressed the Scandinavians greatly. Therefore a good approximate of their fashion is still being sold in the form of orthodox clerical robes.
Honestly, cool video and interesting points, although I don't know why do you not apply the same logic you used for medicine to all other fields...
A lot of these larp/fantasy channels are filmed in all these old forests in denmark and canada and Appalachia, which is great for the tolkien aesthetic. But i live in the middle of texas. So thank you for making this.
This is basically sekanjaben. We drink it at SCA events. It's medieval Gatorade.
When crafting stuff, I often consider whether it is historically plausible, versus authentic. Medieval and rennecanse has a lot of overlap.
For me it’s always been easy. I’m a wizard. When I was in 5th grade i did a talent show in front of the school doing magic tricks. After that I was known as the magician at my school. and the concept of a glass cannon character had always been close to me. Scout in tf2 to start with. But if I ever have the chance to play a glass cannon spell caster like a wizard I do. My wizard character is me, and I am him. And with him he’s been changing and growing with me as I see fit as I get lost in my imagination about who he would be. He is a Half elf dhampir and these two things very much capture what I want to be and who I’ve been. Vampires have always been my favorite monster, and half elf represents my constant feelings of displacement and alienation along with my love for nature and my general sense of aesthetic I aim for. I’m 19 and I’m still learning who I am and Chrimith Seraphim Dreamveil the Crimson Wizard will always be there for me to mold with my story
Summer kit? Where I live, you'd die of heatstroke wearing that outfit in winter! Though I guess it'd be fine in Middle Earth.
When I was an apprentice costumer, my mentor told me - "Good clothes will cost a rock of money or a rock of time; great clothes will cost both"
this isn't it man, the tent is too shiny
its the same thing as SCI FI, its not real SCIENCE
Do you happen to remember where you got your tent?
How to write a fantasy novel or movie...? Take out gunpowder and steam engines. The rest follows logically.
For me is easier set trpg's in 15 and 16 c because of magic and technomagic and advance in trade and medicine.
Pilgrims could stay in monasteries for two days during the middle ages. You would be fed and allowed to rest. The two days was not a hard and fast rule and some people (nobles) pushed the limits of hospitality.
Fair warning for anyone considering cast iron cookware: it is HEAVY! Try a dress rehearsal with a full pack for at least an hour before you commit to a full day.
I like how you complain about people saying “if you don’t like it shut up and go away” then quite Tolkien saying essentially “if you don’t like it shut up and go away”.
The difference being that Tolkien created Middle Earth so he's the only one with the right to say that
@@LivingAnachronism except that isn’t what he was talking about.
You could use this method to join any two similar-sized pieces together, as long as you can carve the mortisses... No real need to start out with one long pole.
Amazing video! I been drawing belts like shit for so long, copying other artists without understanding the subject, now, finally I set out to actually investigate how they work and you just kinda solve it for me =D Loved everything you showed and the explanations!
Its me everytime i play original baldurs gate. Restarting 15 times . Building a character is more fun than playing a character.
Lots of people think the basket hilt Scottish broadsword is a kind of rapier or something, but it has its own distinct place in history and even a special use on the battle field.
Not really understanding the logic when other more powerful races are around, humans would invest less in arms development? They might as well just invest even more into it, to remedy the lack in other departments (numbers, strength etc.) Compared to history, they now face even stronger external threats (apart from only other humans).
... i would be a farmer, that dies from 1d4 stubbed my toe damage
On the other end of the spectrum, many of my favorite settings would be more aptly compared to antiquity than either medieval or post-medieval Europe. You have a variety of societies with very different cultures, clothing, and forms of government, each with its own religion and architecture. Sure some of the technology is anachronistic, but the general feeling is more antiquity than anything. (And there's usually an empire.) I guess if we put them in a family tree, it wouldn't be far from the truth to call the ones you're talking about the Middle Earth branch, and the ones I refer to the Hyborian branch.
Shut up. Nobody cares!
80 K subs. And people believe your BS from books written hundreds of years later. More booster shots for people who believe this easily fooled slave brain
i use mink oil on my leather boots. I can stand in a stream and come out on the other side with my feet dry.
I always love to see the almost ubiquitous and legenadry Mound and Blade: Warband Viking art! This game has a very special place in my heart. I hope the artist behind it gets recognition, He's got so many medieval art, I also really love the medieval mongolian art that he makes, and he's also a mongolian
I just received the pieces I ordered . I was thinking of hand embroidering a design on the jerkin. Excellent video.
It's funny that this got recommended me when it did. I'm currently working on a post-apocalyptic themed outfit. The centerpiece of the outfit is a leather jacket with detachable sleeves laced on with Paracord. I used a seam ripper to remove the sleeves and grommet pliers to make eyelets to lace it up with.
