Backpacking The Uinta Mountains, Utah- June 2024
First trip of the year into the Uintas! This was a recon trip to see where the snow levels were at, and how open the trails really are! We had a late season winter in the range so it was so nice to get back out there after a long break between seasons! Come along as we hope piles of snow, stomp through mud, and and cross creeks to get some much needed solitude in the Uintas!

Northern Lights In Utah! Aurora Borealis, G5 Geomagnetic Storm, May 2024

It's been a wild few weeks here in Utah! Late season snow, then a G5 Geomagnetic Storm from a Coronal Mass Ejection on the Sun which gave two rare nights of being able to see the Northern Lights here in Utah! They rarely come this far south and we have not had a G5 CME since 2003! I was able to catch them on both nights and was even able to get some nightlapse and star trail action as well! I h...

Anytime in the Uinta's is a good time. Looked like some good fishing and a great overnight.
This was a recon to see where the snow was at. Plus good to get out with Jim again. So relaxing and just an all around great trip!
Nice to see grayling
These were really nice Graylings too. Decent size, gave a really nice fight. Just really nice to be back out there!
Great trip. I was surprised when I was getting into grayling there a couple days before you.
Thank you! It was so nice to be back! I’ve only caught Tigers and small Brookies there. So the Graylings was a surprise for sure!
Great trip! Of course you'd have fun with Jim,those guys named Jim are pretty awesome, lol!
You’re right! Jim’s are good people! It was a great one to kick off the year out there. Thanks for watching! 🥾
So good
Thank you so much for watching! Have a great day! 🙏
It's always nice to watch your time here. It is just beautiful 😊
Thank you so much! It was a great first trip of the year out there! Just got home from my second trip out there! Great stuff this weekend! Hope you are well and thanks for watching! 🙏
Thanks for this! I've just asked the question on Amazon whether I'll be able to store a gas canister and a stove in it and it's good to know I can!
Awesome! Glad you got the info you needed! Toaks makes a great pot! Hope you enjoy yours! Let me know if there’s anything I can help with! Thanks for watching!
Do the black hoodie run hotter than the lighter colors when you’re in the sun?
Thanks for your question! Black of course will attract more sunlight but surprisingly the fabric breathes so well it’s not too much of an issue. Thanks for watching! Have a great day!
Nicely done Christian! When were you there? Did you see any bear hunters during your trip (like I did at McGath in May)?
Thanks! We went the first weekend in June. No bear hunters but definitely bear tracks. Three dead, scavenged cows on the way in too. First time I’ve seen that in this area. I saw a bear on a deer carcass last year at the GWT junction on the way out. It was a great time and some good skies too! Thanks for watching! 👍
@@ChristianPaulPhotography Three cow carcasses(!) is definately alot for an area with reliable water and vegitation
It certainly isn’t anything I’m used to seeing down there. I’ve been going to that range at least once a year since 2007.
Cool area. That was a neat waterfall up on the cliff. I'm surprised there was not more snow down there. Looked like a great camp spot and fishing opportunity too. Beautiful lake reflections. Tough fishing but still fun! Beautiful night shots. Great trip to the Boulders. Very nice. Have a great day.
Thanks Steve! They had a slightly lower snow year than we did up here. Thats my new camp spot I found last year. I got one on but it got off. That’s how it goes sometimes. It was fun to get out with the Highline crew again! Time to hit the Uintas! Thanks for watching!
How tall of a trekking pole do you use? 125cm?
Hello! Thanks for your question. Yes you are correct, it is 49” or 125 cm for your pole height. It’s on its third full season, two thru hikes, and it’s still solid. Best single wall tent I’ve ever owned. Thanks for checking out my channel!
@@ChristianPaulPhotographythank you!! Just ordered mine. Really looking forward to using it this summer! Is it possible to shorten the trekking pole I will be using and stake the tent out further in bad weather?
@@isaacwall5324 You don't need to do that. It has a rather large vestibule. Pitch it a few times in the yard is my best advice for using this tent. Think of lining up the geometry of the tent when you stake it out. Tell them you saw it on my channel! Let me know if you have any questions.
@@ChristianPaulPhotographythank you!
Looked like a worthwhile hike. The campsite was perfect. Take care!
It’s a usual haunt down there for me. It’s got views for days! That campsite is awesome! Thanks for watching!
Beautiful ❤️.
Thank you! Good weekend with great friends is hard to beat! Thank you for watching!
Were there a lot of mosquitoes? We are headed to that area in a couple of weeks. Looks nice! How about bears? Anything else you would be prepared for? Thanks for sharing your video!!!
The mosquitoes 🦟 on the first day were minimal because the temps overnight were close to freezing. The second day they were there, but not swarming us like I’ve had in the past. Take a net and Picaridin. I saw a bear track on the way in as I showed in the video, but I never saw one. In this section of the Great Weatern trail I’ve only seen them on the very south end. I think the three carcasses we saw drew them to the area. Hang your food out of camp at night and no scents in the tent. If you do that you should be fine. Thanks for watching! Hope you have a great trip! Let me know how it goes! 🥾
Fantastic content 👌 👏 👍
Thank you so much! Hope you have a great day!
Seemed like a wonderfully relaxing few days...that is what a person needs just to bring back some sanity to a person's life! Awesome to see the trees beginning to bring back all the green!
It was so nice to unplug and get out there. We had a bit of an extended winter here so it’s nice to get back in the mountains again! Thank you for watching! 🥾
It's nice to go back and visit places you enjoyed last year. I enjoyed your trip, sorry you didn't catch anything, but the scenery is beautiful. Anytime out in nature is time well spent. I enjoyed your trip. 😊
It was nice to be back out on trail! I’m ok with not catching anything. Fishing is not the only reason I go backpacking. It was nice to be walking the trails and to unplug. The sound of the Boreal Toads and the solitude well made up for the poor fishing. Seeing the Milky Way was so nice! Thank you for watching! 🥾
At least you caught some great views
Indeed. I definitely threw the whole box at them. They just wanted to spawn. I did get the one on, so at least there was that. But it was nice to be out in the mountains backpacking again. Thanks for watching! 🥾
Incredible area and campsite! Too bad you didn't catch anything but I guess trying is half the fun anyway. Gorgeous night sky footage! Love the view there at the end. Nicely done my friend!
Thank you! Fishing was off this year down there. In years past it’s been red hot. I think the snow just came off right before I went down there. I got one on, but alas nothing landed. Still great to be in the mountains again backpacking! Thank you for watching! 🥾
Nice video m8 !
Thank you very much! It was powerful to see these sites! The Green Mask was really amazing! Walking in the footsteps of the ancients! I can recommend my Salt Creek videos from Canyonlands National Park as well as that is another backpacking trip we did to these sites. Salt Creek has some of the most amazing pictographs I have ever seen! One of the most remote Arches in all of Utah! Hope you are enjoying my videos! If you are, like, subscribe, and share! Here is the first episode of the Salt Creek trip. Thanks for watching! czcams.com/video/CVqIL6kxHVA/video.html
Awesome ! Everyday I am discovering more dwellings. Been to Mesa Verde and seen several in Arizona. This will be my next trip.
This is one of the most amazing places I have ever been. It’s powerful when you are in there. Check out the full video linked here from this trip into Grand Gulch. Water is scarce so do your research. The permit can be tricky so get on that asap! Good luck! Thanks for watching and commenting!
So relieving to see you still active in the comments section after 2 years. I'm planning on camping at Henry's Fork Campground this July. How is the campground? I'm a bit worried that I won't find a place to camp when I get there, as I plan to arrive in the early afternoon (2-3 range); is there ample room for many campers there? How are the bugs there? Hope you are well, and thank you!
There are several sites at the trailhead. They are all free and all first come first serve. I got to my spot around that same time. Be aware, this year the Uintas have been really slow to melt out in the high elevations. I think by July the upper basin where all the lakes are may or may not have some lingering snow. I had zero bugs but I also was there in August on a dry year. It has been a wet year so I’d be prepared for bugs. Hope that helps. Thank you for watching!
This was very helpful, thank you! I did forget to ask a couple of questions: How much parking is there at the trailhead? Also, how long did it take you to get to Dollar Lake from the trailhead? I'm thinking that it might be a better idea to get to the trailhead a little earlier, hike to Dollar Lake, and set up camp there, so I don't have to worry too much about limited availability with dispersed camping allowed at the lake. Must say, I'm a bit worried about the snow; my plan was to summit on the weekend of July 16, but if the snow lingers... I'll have to see. Tough to reschedule something like this when you're coming in from the DC area as I am. By the way, I enjoyed the video! Sorry I forgot to mention it the first time. Have a good one!
@hansoscizor2894 thank you! From my experience there is no fee to park at the trailhead and camping is free but first come first serve. Dollar Lake to the trailhead was about 3 hours from camp to exit vehicle. It will most likely be snow free minus some north facing shots by mid July. I hope this helps!
From another guy named Christian that is also born in August, thanks for sharing that awesome video!!!
Leo’s unite! That’s awesome! Thank you so much for watching! 🥾🏕️
Awesome place
Capitol Reef National Park is one of the most underrated parks in the country. There is so much to do but it’s not a zoo like Arches or Zion. This was a nice way to stretch the legs after the drive down there. Check out my Lower Muley Twist backpacking trip from the same weekend to see the remote backpacking this park has to offer! Thank you so much for watching and commenting! 🥾
I think I’ll have to check this out. Thanks!
I love mine! Thank you for watching!
Now that certainly is great!! Good go!!
Thank you! It’s a great tool to have in the gear closet!
Nice review and demonstration. That is a great way to get those partially full canisters consolidated. Well done. I might consider picking one up. Have a great day.
Thanks Steve! Honestly I’m really happy with how simple this was to use! No more stack of canisters in the closet! Super stoked to be working with these folks! Thanks for watching! 🙏

Great video, congratulations! and have a nice day 👍😀
Thank you so much for watching!
Pretty awesome. Well done capturing the beauty. I hope to see them in Alaska in August! Crossing my fingers! Have a great day.
It was amazing to capture these here in Utah! I hope you see them up there in Alaska as well! Thanks for watching!
Wow! Your videos never fail to captivate me.
Hey David! Glad to see you on here! I’ve done some slo mo fires in a couple of recent videos backpacking! Shooting the Northern Lights was here in Utah was a treat! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Thank you! I’m so glad you got to enjoy this event! It was cosmic for sure! 🌌
So cool. I was vacationing in Virginia during the Northern Lights and it was so cloudy we couldn't see them. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! I’ve seen them in Alaska and Minnesota, but I’ve never seen them here in Utah. To catch them down here was pretty special! Thank you for watching! 🙏

Thank you! It was awesome to see here in Utah. It’s a rare thing to see them like that down here! Thank you for watching! 🙏

A few inches up there at the beginning of the week. You can still ski Alta peak to base. It’s gonna warm up here this coming week so I think it will be a corn harvest till it melts out. Thank you for watching!

Crazy indeed! You know what they say, “Its Utah, if you don’t like the weather wait 10 minutes!” 🤣 I had hung it up for the year when this storm hit us. It was nice to get one more to close it out on a high note. I’m ready for more backpacking so let’s bring on the heat! Thanks for watching Steve!
I hunkered under that same boulder a few weeks earlier! North pole was wild, I had rain, hail and sleet! Awesome video!
What is it with North Pole Pass? Everyone gets weather trying to go over it! Thank you so much for watching! 🥾
I was totally ready for hiking season and boom 36". I think I heard most snow in May since 89. Looks like you took advantage of it.
Me too! I had pretty much figured it was over in April then Pow!💥 Wild late season storm! It was nice to wrap it up on a good note for the year! Let’s hope for a heat wave! Thanks for watching! 🏂
I thought about going up there today for an overnighter but ended up out West instead. Nice that you landed a fish and that they stocked the res. Fun game of peek a boo with the turkeys. Always nice to see the wildlife. Looked like you had a nice cap spot. Looked like a nice quick getaway. Well done. Have a great day.
Thanks Steve! It was fun to get out again! If you watch closely right near the end of the turkey clip a buck walks through the frame! That was a very nice spot! I think I’ll have to visit in the fall! Thanks for watching! Have a great weekend!
Wow! That's quite a bit of snow. I live in Virginia and It did snow here once on May 6th 1989. I remember the date because my wife was in the hospital giving birth to our 3rd daughter. Have a great weekend!
That’s a really great story! This was a huge late season storm for here in Utah. It will push back the mountains melting out by a week or two! It was fun to get out one more time! Thank you for watching! 🏂
Nice day to fish and hike. Have a good day.
It was definitely a nice day up there! Left me wanting to get out again! Hoping soon! Thanks for watching!
Great hiking trip. I have yet to explore the backcountry of CR. Beautiful area. Loved that cowboy camp spot. Awesome! great night shots and camp in the cedars. Well done on your adventure and video. Have a great day.
It was so nice to be backpacking again! I’ve never been completely alone in a national park during spring break, I was on this trip! The cowboy camp was pretty neat! An all around awesome trip! Thanks for watching! Have a great day!
Awesome overnight hike. I need something to jump-start my butt. It's just not happening for me. I looked into a Tenkara. Those are pretty sweet.
It was nice to get out again after my desert trip. It turned out to be a lot more fun than I expected. I can’t wait to go again! Tenkara is a lot of fun! I’m hooked! 😁 Thank you for watching! Have a great weekend!
