R154 Tail Housing Removal and Installation Tips from Driftmotion.com
At Driftmotion.com we offer brand new R154 transmissions, along with upgraded billet shifter housings in 4 different lengths. We also do shifter extensions on MK3 Supra type stock shifter housings for R154 and W58. These upgrades require removing the tail housing for installation, so we wanted to do a basic tail housing removal and installation walkthrough, and talk about some things to look out for.

Driftmotion.com Camry All-Trac 3S-GTE swap, with 5 speed AWD Celica drivetrain conversion, and custom front mount intercooler setup hidden behind factory bumper. It sounds loud because it just had an open downpipe in the video! This video was taken before we made the custom 3" exhaust for the car, but we just couldn't wait to see how it ran!

Aaron's 1989 Suzuki Sidekick on the Rubicon at the annual Marlin Crawler Rubicon Roundup. We went from Loon Lake to Lake Tahoe in two days, no problems again this year. We built the exo-cage just before the trip. We had a great time again, can't wait for next year!
1jz flywheel, lightweight aluminum for 1jz/2jz with R154
zhlédnutí 11KPřed 16 lety
This is a new product with a few patented design impliments. The flywheel is machined from forged aluminum, so it stays true under the most extreme conditions. The friction surface is slotted like a brake rotor. There is a hardened steel washer around the crank bolt circle with locking tabs included. These are only $350 at www.driftmotion.com. The quality of this product is superior. We have 10...
One of my shift rails don’t allin as you mention in the video before putting it all back I believe it’s the reverse it’s the third one closes to you I have tried pulling it down then up I have the older r154 any suggestions or causes ? And can I just install it like that it aligns up just not perfectly a small little gap
Sounds like maybe the detent ball/spring is missing that keeps it in place? All 3 rails should kind of snap into position. Take the tail housing off, and individually move each rail front to back, one at a time. If they will each not move in both directions, the shift lever selector will not be able to move it either.
I just need to weld my tail housing would you recommend just removing tail housing from transmission ? While still bolted on
Yes I would definitely remove it and clean it thoroughly first. It's going to get hot enough to burn the oil on the inside of the case, and it's going to make a smelly mess. The last thing you want is oil on fire inside of your transmission.
Yeah okay would you recommended if I just remove the tail housing alone without removing the whole transmission like just unbolting the tail housing while still on the car ?
What RTV are you using to seal transmission? Can't find tb1281 nowhere
Permatex Ultra Grey works very well, and its available at any auto parts store.
Just bought TB1207B, will see how it work@@mk3driftmotion
Watching this from the linked article about the Camry cop car 😁
Same lol
🤔 that looks like Pomona/Ontario
Help!! What do you do when you forget to take the ball bearing thats next to the Long bolt Out?? Now its stuck in gear, and i cant get it to loosen. The ball did not fall in the transmission. But it did push a rod down, when installing the rear housing i think. This is a mk3 supra non tripod version
@mk3driftmotion
I got the same issue some insight on how to fix it would be nice
Is it still around 🤔
Does anyone know where I can buy an extension/tail housing whole ?
Still have it?
so my shift lever on the older r154 doesn’t look like that. any chance i could dm or email you guys on some guidance on how to re-install the tail housing?
Ok call me at the shop 9099490459 ext 2
You can swap those tailhousings correct?
No the tripod tail housing does not swap onto the older transmissions,, they are internally different.
@@mk3driftmotion would you have a recommendation on how to move the shifter location of a tripod transmission to that of an earlier version of the r154 or should I just throw it in the scrap bin?
@@turnloosecollective yes we offer billet housings and arms that convert the tripod trans to 4 different shifter positions with an MK3 Supra style shift lever. www.driftmotion.com/DM-Tripod-JDM-R154-Billet-Shifter-Housing-Arm-p/dm3522.htm
@@mk3driftmotion in the mail! Thank you!
Thank you sooooooooo much!
I’m racking up parts. Can’t wait to do this to my Camry though
Subscribed u ma man
NICE CAR, I LIKE IT
Only thing sucked about the video was it was in 480dpi ;)
I am glad! I am on Xplornet satellite internet and can’t even watch videos at 240p without a bunch of buffering!!
Personaly I would have kept the Jags V12 and tuned it up.
This car's V12 had rod knock, and blown headgasket/s, and an engine fire at some point in its history... I did this car a favor by pulling out that old boat anchor :)
That swap is not only to be condoned, but it should also be commended for blessing that cars cool design with some actual sustainability since they were absolute dogs when kept totally stock.
Nice conversion. Really impressed. I have a xj6 with a sbc and t68 billet turbo. 2jz are monsters
hey anyone know if a 4agze can work with the awd to?
Hay men , tengo un auto de los mismo y he pesido ponerle el mismo motor que dices me lo recomiendas o es en varde
Best Engine to replace any RWD OLD JUNK MOTOR with!!!Most reliable/ Affordable
2800Ibs of goodness! It'll poop on a Evo/Sti with the same power output lol
Nice! I just bought a 1992 XJS and I'm not sure which engine to swap into it. Did you purchase a conversion kit to do the swap and if so, which one? Also, what was the total cost of the conversion? Parts, and labor. I just need a ball park figure to aim for. Thanks!
poor mans evo/wrx. pure awesomeness nonetheless
But it’s still awesome
What Stuf did you use to Lift it? it looks to high Tires MT 35 ??
Even I think this engine'll be ideal for a Big Healey or big British Saloon, like an Armstrong Siddley.
damn i wanted to see the awd burnout!!
What is the xjr's motor capable of, how much aftermarket support does it have, whats the reliability? 2JZ is capable of 900 HP before you even open it up and change the internals... After that the skies the limit! Whats not beneficial?
"stupid engine swaps" lol This one made 317whp at 15psi for the baseline dyno, even through the power robbing TH400 (non-lockup) torque converter. I think it was a very successful swap. Everyone who sees it loves the wheels, but wait till we finish the rest of the paint and body work and the wheels will make more sense.
I don't usually condone stupid engine swaps, especially in to good cars like this, but the 2Js silky smooth straight six purr is so very Jag-like it works quite well. Same can't be said for the wheels though....
Better then a STAAAG! ;D
It goes 70mph as long as it is flat, slight uphill it will do 55-60mph, but on long steep hills in 3rd im going 40mph if I'm lucky. Honestly I'm never in a rush when I'm driving it :) It never lets me down though, it has gladly gone everywhere I have ever wanted to go. We drove it up to Big Bear several times and that's close to 7000 ft. elevation.
It's the stock Suzuki master, with V6 front brakes, and stock V6 Toyota rear drums. It stops excellent! I think I used FJ80 rotors on the front iirc.
hey what brake set up you using? stock geo master cylinder? with toyota capliers?
Actually, forced induction improves fuel efficiency, it also increases the engines capability to consume fuel.
yeah man!! =D
Having owned three XJ-S's and two Supra's all I can say is AWESOME!!!!!
Nice rims, but get rid of that trunk spoiler. ☺
nice
Dude this this is great, but get some suspension in that thing! That lean is killing me!
@makaveli828 People like you are why I carry a hammer in my car at all times.
it's actually 2712 lbs, but the scale weighs mine at 2689 with my fat ass in it. you know, age and rust kinds lightens things
Custom mounts etc or is there a kit? I had a 1uz now have a 1zz and planning for the 2jz
2jz's work in everything, I bet a GT-R would possibly benefit from one.
Awesome ride dude. i think its worth the money you put in.
Awesome rig, awesome video! so the trail slayer kit comes with the springs for the lift as well? How much higher than stock is it?
i want the jag emblem and the spoiler!
Can we get more videos of this car in action? plz
This is a damn work of art, damn you! I am so jealous, but thank you for the idea! It makes perfect sense.
