A bit of advice for people out there. If your a college student most colleges have an IT Student Worker positions available for enrolled students for cheap labor. It does not pay well, however, it gets your foot in the door. The best time to apply for these kind of jobs is a month or 2 before the start of each semester. So if you want a job in the Fall semester apply in July - August and if you want a job in the Spring semester apply in November - December. This is due to students dropping out and/or graduating so each semester usually one or two spots open up. If you don't get a response or they do not pick you do not lose hope, keep applying each semester. This is what I did and now I worked my way up to being Cyber Security Analyst, I wish everyone the best of luck!

Hey Jamesy thanks for your advice related to CCNA exam, I would like to know your suggestion, I have Google Cybersecurity and Sec+ now without prior experience in IT security and IT Support, I have my BSc with 2 yrs exp in software engineering and it's been a while, I would like to get into IT Security (with just google cybersec and Sec+ I am unable to land any entry level security job or Internships yet), and IT Support which certification would you recomend that helps me in both IT Security and IT Support roles, should I get Net+ (but I already have sec+ and many employers for IT Support looking for Net+), CCST or CCNA.

I would say net+ if you’re trying to get into any role. If you don’t want to get into something as networking heavy then net+ is the way to go. Also, use your software skills to do projects related to security for example automating certain tasks or scripts would be something that would look attractive on a resume.

Currently in an internship and my manager stated that they don't really care for certification unless they come down to comparing two candidates they really want. This is a manager who has 30-plus years of experience in the IT field. For them, they care more about actual real-world experience and being able to work within a team. Understanding and being able to apply the A+ will always be beneficial in having a great foundation within IT. But if you can land a job or internship that exposes you to hands-on experiences plus having mentors guide you within the IT field. It's way more beneficial than any certification you gain by yourself.

I took the CCNA and failed . I can tell you that there's 4 lab questions where they expect you to know how to setup voice LAN's and standard network setups using Layer 3 switches and you have about 5 minutes for each lab. So you need to make sure that you not only know how to set everything up but that you can also do fairly quickly. The labs is what made me fail because I didn't learn much on layer 3 switches during my class . So my advice to anyone taking it soon is focus on labs with layer 3 switches .

Can you guys stop going on the internet and lying about going going into a IT job easily??!? I've seen it too much where people say you can be a programmer in 1 week and some other bs about working at Google within 1 month. ALL OF YOU NEED TO STOP!!!

It definitely isn’t easy. But I’m sharing a story of someone landing an IT job within a month by working hard everyday. I personally didn’t do this when getting my job and obviously it’s going to be different for everyone else.

This will be a challenge for those of us over 55 YO to do. There's so much descrimination out there. Many women report only being able to earn minimum wage. What suggestions do you have for older adults getting into this line of career to overcome descrimination?

AI as well as automatic phone services have taken over 90% of these jobs, and more of them are going to go poof within the next 5 years due to AI. Also people fail get job cause most the people doing the interviews are complete jokes and have no idea what they're doing. I got an interview once 3 years ago guy spend 30 minutes just shit talking my college back ground during the whole interview I literally had to interrupt the guy just to ask him if he thought that poorly about the college than why did he call me in to interview me, whole thing was a joke. Now a days you got guys on linkedin bragging about calling in 7 people for a interview all at the same time just to make them all sit there waiting 3 hours before he actual talks to them, as if wasting 3 hours of someone's time is a measurement of someone's ability to do their job when real it just measurement of that guy being an asshole. Also let not forget how many ghost job posting that currently exist right now that aren't actually looking to hire people they just want your information so they can sell it for third parties, or figure out if they can get away with laying off their current employees to replace them with people willing to work for less money. Cause employee loyalty in 2024 doesn't exist anymore employers are looking to shit can current employees and screw them out of every penny or benefit they can at any moment they can anymore. And best is the Squarespace CMO saying people should be willing to work for free, how the fuck can I afford to pay my bills and buy food if I work for free seriously employers today are bat shit crazy.
