A New Bus! | Rear Roof Gutter and Frame Restoration
In this video I’m making some really big leaps forward in the bus restoration, so much exciting progress is coming in the next video too. I think I’ve finally passed the point where all the rust has been cut out or treated, and just fitting the replacement panels is all that remains. A little light at the end of the 3 year long bodywork journey, much of which was the learning curve.
I have tried 4-5 different brands of replacement metal for the bus over the last couple of years and one stuck out as the best without a doubt. BBT silver weld through line has been the closest fit, the best coating and always seems thicker than other replacement metal. Big shoutout to BBT for making this full bus restoration possible.

If you watch all the way through, I end up removing the entire rear of the bus, in preparation for new metal. Along the way I find some repairs that need done and practice both tig and mig welding. In the very last clip there's a peak at some of the new metal going back on in the next video. Thanks for following along! VW Bus Restoration: Cargo Floor From Start to Finish┃ASMR Edition

Join me for ten minutes of garage asmr, this time I'm completing the cargo floors from start to finish! Its close to $1000 to buy all new cargo floors, so last year I decided to restore the floors that came with the bus. I regretted this choice about halfway through, as each side was stamped differently, most likely from different years. My multipurpose welder is still a star of the show, being...

Hi Brandon,Great progress with the final repair on the buss a lot of work is donembut the best remains The best you ordert from BBT it`s the best in Europe forall the parts you need for the VW T1 Bus,looking forward for moujting the parts .Greetings,Hubertus🙏🏻🇳🇱🇳🇴☮ cheers🥃
Dude! You drove over the skyway! That’s local to me and hope to see you on the road when it’s finished. You are incredibly inspiring and hope to get to meet you one day. Keep the videos coming, man!
Good to see the bus coming along! You're doing a fantastic job!
Nice work. Must have taken you many many hours but the result is top notch! 👌 keep them coming! 🙂
Excellent work. Keep it up! You will have a beauty of a T1. No shame in using aftermarket panels, sometimes things are too far gone to do any proper work on. Thats just the thing with these old buses. Over here in the Netherlands we have the company Kieft en Klok, they do full restorations on these buses and beetles. But they dont have any resto videos online unfortunately. Lucky for us, you do!🎉
How goods the blasting :) I love bring crappy stuff back from the dead. Our houses smell the same ;)
nice work!
It did turn out nice! Thanks for watching :)
Dude I’m loving your progress. YT@rustydubbs
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Great video as always 😊 You can see how hard the Brazilian's worked these buses! The humidity and rain really attacked the old steel 😮 I dealt with rust and body damage on my '58... You have performed a miracle on this bus😊
For sure! This bus was a taxi in its previous Brazilian life, so I’m sure it was abused extra hard, not anymore :)
Big box full of goodies , just like Christmas.
Oh yea I’ve been saving up for this order for a while 🎅
I never get tired of seeing Brandon do so much so well with so little, especially the limited space! Totally inspired me to take apart a 72 bus in my standard 2 car garage with an upstairs room for storage.
Yes! Get into it! A two car is a little cozy but able to get the job done. When I started this project I was in a townhouse one car garage.
nice work thanks
Thanks for commenting!
Great progress. I hope you’re really as patient as you appear! Very impressive. Thanks
I’m told I am a patient person, I think 4 kids is teaching me daily patience.
Nice, right angle die grinder is one of my favorite tools 🙌
I want the upgraded battery pack for it since I use it so often, definitely worth buying the big ones.
It's all coming together beautifully! With all those VW parts ot looks like Christmas came really early! 👍
It is coming together! 🎅
Great videos! I have a Brazilian patchwork special myself. For now, I’m just looking the other way when I see cracked bondo and misaligned doors. I’m enjoying it, but I know I’ll probably be headed down the same road as you whenever I decide to face the truth about what I bought. Hahaha! At least this gives me a good idea what lies beneath the bondo
Seems like most of these busses need the bottom 12 inches completely replaced, it’s worth diving all the way in if you have the time!
Great work and great filming, always a pleasure when a new episode pops up. Thanks for taking us along!
Thanks for watching! I so appreciate the support
😊👍🏻👍🏻
amazing Brandon.....upside down with a tig welder is not easy welding....you are saving a totally unsavable bus. great job.
Yea I have no business trying to tig upside down as a beginner but it came out nice :) thanks for watching Mike.
@@BrandonsBus Yea you did well. it is really hard to do. I was surprised you did so well.
Maravilhoso ver a restauração dessa kombi! um abraço aqui do Brasil!
Thank you!
thxs for sharing, looks good...
Each video I get a little bit better!
Oh wow, you spoiled yourself this time. You may never go back to the bone yard. Best of luck I hope they all fit perfectly. P.S. did you ever check the pm I sent you for the old paint chart?
Haha those new panels are definitely spoiling me, fabrication from scratch is so tedious and difficult. I haven’t seen your DM! Where did you send it to me?
@@BrandonsBus, however, it would get to you via this thing. I'm not computer head.
It looks like you have got quite a haul of nice new shiny bits, and that means that there will be more great episodes for us all to look forward to when you are fitting them all in. The blasting cabinet will be a big asset: it's just a pity that you really need a beast of a compressor to feed the things for a decent period of use. Best wishes.
And do I have to tap my fingers on the rubber seal just like that? LoL 😆.
Oh yea I love a little movie magic
This restoration is perhaps the most inspired thing I’ve seen. So thorough. So much hard work. Starting from novice you became an expert. Can’t wait to see what’s to come. Also it would be great to hear you get interviewed by someone like Brent Hughes on haptic garage so you could share what you have learned with us.
I really appreciate your comment, you know both how difficult this process is and how long I have been doing this. Thanks for following from the beginning!
Another awesome video! Plus more goodies for the garage! I like that you use that spot welder alot. Nice to not have to drill and fill holes or have to fire up the welder and put a hood on. Less PPE
Yea absolutely love the spot welder, I’ll use it wherever I can. Mig and tig generate so much heat that spreads on the whole panel, seems like the spot welder limits the heat just to the one spot.
Ok, you have to tell the truth about the glass beader/sand blaster. I was just about to order one.
Truth is it’s as good as your compressor is, if you have a beast of a compressor the blast cabinet works perfectly. I probably wish I got the size larger, but I couldn’t really fit it in my garage.
@BrandonsBus , I have a 7.5hp 80 gallon with 1" plumbing and a ½" line to the sand blaster and I'll hook the box to it. Plenty of CFM. Should be enough?
@@2JustMe1I wouldn't pretend to have enough experience or expertise to be able to advise about blasting equipment, but there are I few things that perhaps you could consider. It sounds like you have a pretty good compressor set up though I don't think that you can really have too big an air reservoir to act as a buffer when you're blasting. Some compressor sellers give cubic feet per minute figures for their products but don't specify the pressure at which they develop that volume. You really need to know what pressure you will require to blast at, and the volume of air needed. Abrasive blasting cabinets are great things to have, and allow recycling of the media you are using, but they all have size limitations and the type of equipment you need depends very much on the type of work you expect to do. There is a guy here in England who has a CZcams channel under the title of Maximus Ironthumper: He puts out videos on various subjects, but lives off-grid and has a background in blacksmithing. He has also recently completed a ground-up restoration of a Land Rover that you can find on his playlist. I refer to him because he has featured media blasting several times on his channel and he has both a blasting cabinet and an industrial capacity blasting gun that he uses outside for big pieces. He has a really serious diesel powered compressor of the type used for road works (bought second-hand) and a pretty massive air reservoir. He also has the facility to link up air reservoirs to increase capacity when needed without permanently having a huge tank taking up too much room in his workshop area, and where only a more modest sized compressor is wanted. When blasting outdoors, it is possible to spread out tarpaulins to catch the blasting medium for re-use, but not much use on windy days. As for as the cabinets themselves are concerned, it's a compromise between the space you have available and the size of the parts you are likely to need to blast. In most cases, bigger is probably better, but efficient air extraction, filtration and lighting are also factors. I have always felt that a stainless steel lining for a blasting cabinet would be better than a painted metal surface that will, inevitably be blasted away. I hope that these observations are of some use: they are based on my reading up on the subject rather than personal experience as, I regret to say, I am now too far over the hill to take on the restorations I would have loved to try. Good luck and best wishes.
The spot welders are a complete savor. I have an old giant one, but it's no good for small part's.
I love my spot welder, and it’s pretty cheap from harbor freight compared to most welding equipment
@@BrandonsBus , lol, I bought mine in 1981 from the Snap-On truck.
That definitely ain’t going nowhere.
ん?なんの意味があるんだ?
During metal fabrication, the replacement panel needs to be taken on and off multiple times for fitment. Clecos are temporary fasteners that make that process easy with small holes that are eventually welded shut.
It's a temporary stopper. Thank you for the explanation‼️
Where can I reference the Lower gas tank panel, or part number

Nice work 👍
And of course an excellent job.
The heat doesn't effect the glue/sealer?
Not during the 90 minute dry time!
I'm working on a 74 t2 and i think after im thinking i might get an older one to restore as well.
Split windows are the best! Honestly tho, I love all vws.
You should wear mask pls pls.
I have a mask on the whole time l was spot welding :)

After learning so much, and developing all these skills you can not just stop after one VW project. You are becoming a VW restoration specialist.
