    Finally someone that speels my embouchure language. Great vid! I also tried Adam Rapa his approach (with probably works for a lot of people) but tongue anchoring with the tip way down low isn’t working for me at all. I think I have used this “modified tongue anchoring” technique for a while now and it works great. Haven’t got beyond a steady high G3 yet but I think that’s the limit for now. My tongue is way up when I reach G3 so I think I max out at that point 😅 I’m just curious if you have thoughts in this… I have a rather large tongue and I think that’s why the “common” tongue anchoring is not working for me.

    This simple book saved my trumpet life about twenty years ago. I was a mess after five years of extensive playing with a jump 'n jive band and forcing my chops. I think you got a lot of it right, but instead of comparing it too much to TCE, look at it as it's own concept. There are certainly some Callet ideas in it. In fact, it made me aware of Callet's teachings and I have done my share of TCE. I visited clinics of Callet and Bahb Civiletti and practiced it a lot. It only got me so far, and now I am completely back with BE again. (One of the things I learned from TCE is of course to be able to anchor my tongue on my bottom lip. That is a concept that is very much encouraged by Jeff also. He doesn't talk about it in the book, if you don't do it, there isn't necessarily a need to learn it, but once you play this way, no need to go back and do it differently all over again, just saying). The simplest explanation of the method is what Jeff says himself: a series of exaggerated motion exercises to make the lips move in more or less the right direction. That has to be taken very literally and is all he ever claims. These are exercises, not a way of playing or setting your embouchure. There will be no BE embouchure, or a BE setup, only exercises to get your lips to move in more or less the right direction. For me that was gold: no need for drastic embouchure changes, other ways of playing, manipulating the chops. Just do the exercises as literally as possible, in the prescribed order, and you are on your way. One major benefit to all other methods: Jeff is still alive and very much prepared to help you grasp these concepts. everyone who askes about this method I encourage to write an email to Jeff and tell him your story. Don't expect tailor made solutions, do expect a lot of knowledge and patience. For me this is the safest way to improve your embouchure. Not quick, but sure.

    Loved that he mentioned sticking your jaw out to access the upper register. I just recently started doing that and it’s changed everything. It’s going to take a while to harness it but my range went from a strained high Eb on a good day to effortless G over high C over night. I wouldn’t worry about sound immediately. Just stick with it. The discouragement I heard early on in my playing career caused me to abandon it. I wish I hadn’t.

    I think that the lenght of tubes, shape of the curves and the materials can affetct the intonation and sound. I saw this kind of "instant fixing tools" during the years and I can say that some of them can work in some trumpets and some of them in other. Example: I tried the Denis Wick ring and it works fine in a old Bach stradivarious but it doesn't seem so "magic" in a my modern Yam Xeno. I never tried this AR tool but I tried a similar tool and I noticed that when I change mouthpiece I have to change the position of the tool beacuse I'm changing the gap and the resonance of the trumpet and the air pressure. Anyway I always recommend to try this tools and give feedback to the factory that make them. In this way we can help manufacturers to make better intruments everyday!

    • @trumpetthoughts
      @trumpetthoughts Před měsícem

      You might be right in that the gap can affect intonation as well, so you might need to slightly change the location of the First Aid if changing mouthpieces...

      It's really sad to hear that this book messed you up so badly. It strikes me as weird that you want to try it again after 20 years. That said, this same little book saved my trumpet life. Without it, I wouldn't have played anymore. Did you have contact with mr Smiley when you got into trouble? If not, and if you are willing to give it another shot, please contact him first. He always answers and is very knowledgeable. He knows what he is talking about, doesn't charge you and is simply in this to help people. Do it, it might save your trumpet playing after all, but don't go messing with the book alone, I am afraid it will give you the same bad result as twenty years ago.

    I have the book. When I started with BE I did it as close to "letter to letter" in the instructions. After a couple of month I played high C as easy as thinking it. It felt like it was my body playing my thoughts. Unfortunally I got cancer in my lip so that embouchure is not for me any longer. If one should try this method please notice that it is a powerfull tool and not musicality- pure technique. It is easy to understand It is easy to learn It is IMPORTANT that jaw is NOT moving when doing lip clamp. Be patient and see to that the lip squeek is working before putting mouthpiece on lips..GENTLY! When going from lowest notes to highest notes :DO NOT PRESS MOUTHPIECE TOWARDS LIPS! If you do so the flex from roll out to roll in will be troublefull. Have fun and the system can be a supplement to your current embouchure, you do not need to change anything what so ever just follow the guidence in the book. Sincerely Erik Dktrumpet@gmail.com PS: Jeff uses a sentence:"Three and out" wich means try three times and then stop for some hours/half a day. Otherwise the risk is that you are messing with the new feeling in the lips.

    I still have this book and I really liked it when I got it few years ago. I moved to TCE but I think this book has lot of similar concepts. The real problem with Callet's books is that sometimes he is a bit confusing and not easy to understand. I had some lessons with Colqhoun and he helped me as a "guide". I think your channel is really helpful too for learning TCE 😉

    I have accidentally discovered this very thing a couple of weeks ago and it has made all the difference in world. It was discovered out of necessity, because, no matter how much of a warm up I get to do. I Remembrance Day gigs where I have to sit between one to 3 hours before I have to stand and play. I had the exact same feeling of the mouthpiece being too big when I plant to play. It would mess me up bad and I would struggle. I re-learned how to form my embouchure exactly as you demonstrated, and it has allowed me to perform even though I feel as if I am coming in completely cold. This has been a life saver.

    It's a gimmick with dangerous potential. If someone doesn't use just mouth compression with this, they can cause themselves a stroke or aneurism. To truly work the embouchure, you have to have air passing through the lips, making them vibrate. In addition to working the muscles, the moving air is what builds that thick tissue cushion that a lot of people refer to as a callus. When it comes to gadgets, it all boils down to one thing: The only thing that helps trumpet playing is trumpet playing. All gadgets are gimmicks designed to make money. Larry came out with a product using other people's money because he didn't have a retirement pension and because people are so gullible and willing to throw their money at anything that they think might get them to play high notes without as much practice, they'll take the bait hook, line, and sinker. Jeez! And as far as the endorsements are concerned - that's just a case of, "yeah, OK, I'll be a good solid citizen, just a good guy and say that you're product is great - I'll scratch your back and you'll scratch mine, one day I'll come out with a book and you'll endorse it."

    • @trumpetthoughts

      Thank you for your review.. try using it slower especially on the downstroke. Using just the mouthpiece is not the same thing! That is a very effective isometric that I published in 2013. The ts is not isometric. It is isotonic. The variable backpressure of the meter allows the muscle fibers to move against the variable resistance

    For all the skepticism in the comments I bought one at ITG from Tony. I was skeptical as well. I think Tony shot himself in the foot for making these because I came in to buy an expensive trumpet from him and left fixing the tuning on my vintage Conn 2 B and Holton revelation . My vintage horns have such a beautiful tone quality but the tuning on some of the notes ruined the experience. I don’t the science behind this but it works! Now I’m kicking myself in the butt for selling my pre war French besson because of the tuning! I hope everyone buys one that has vintage instruments because the man deserves to make his millions off this invention. No one paid me for this comment lol. Thanks Tony!
