Live Performance: Mr. In a Hurry, part 2
Some serious guitar shredding, heavy boogie, hard rock, metal boogie kind of thing! A battle between the bassist & guitarist! Audience minds blown! All on borrowed backline & borrowed drums, with only THREE rehearsals! Kudos to Darren Moon on bass & Joel Baer on drums!
Apologies for the many blurry shots - the light show & the cameras were not getting along.

    Sounds silly but I have a reason I have been searching for a tuner that displays the octave number with the note, not string number. I'm always unstringing my VI, sometimes I want to move quick, might have my ears plugged, also I want to train my ears and use it on different sounds, just seeing E1, A5 etc. Anyway I can't find out if any have that without testing. I've bought 3 handhelds that fooled me with description and pictures. Always just string number in the different modes. Just full chromatic scale with octave number and note, preferably with frequency listed.

    Great video! I dont play metal. First and foremost, is if you are happy with how your guitar sits with you. Neck profile, body shape, how reactive are your pots and so on. Second on the list are your speakers. If you have a mic going to house people only hear the PA and the sound engineers ability. So, you can have great tone, but the mixer and the PA, will determine your sound. Which, as you know can be frustrating. I can go on, but I'm old and just thought I'd give my 2 cents. Thanks again

  • @lumberlikwidator8863

    Any engineer worth their salt would tell you that Jim Lill’s “neckless” guitar is anything but that. It actually has two necks in the form of the boards that run between the two benches. If one of the functions of a guitar neck is to maintain the distance between the nut and the bridge under string tension (and it certainly is), then Jim’s guitar has two necks. If, as Jim and others claim, only the bridge, strings, pickup and the nut will affect tone, then Jim has failed to prove anything because he has introduced a fifth element into the mix without realizing it. Very unscientific. Jim can keep making his videos and there will always be a certain number of people who will be enthralled because they haven’t thought things through. Here’s another thing that a lot of people haven’t considered: If wood and construction methods had nothing to do with tone then clip-on tuners wouldn’t work on solidbody guitars.

    • @ClarkColborn
      @ClarkColborn Před 6 dny

      I think what Jim & others are saying is that tone - that is to say, the frequency response - is only affected minimally by the type of wood, so minimally as to be negligible. And I'm not even sure Jim suggests that; I think he does his experiments and asks the viewer to draw their own conclusions, for the most part. I could be wrong. In any event, serious question for you: how would YOU perform an experiment to determine how much tone comes from any given component? It has to be measurable, and repeatable. I have ideas, but they are beyond my time & budget constraints, so I would honestly be interested in seeing & hearing how others would test this. Thanks for watching & commenting!

    Hi Clark. I'm just a hobby player and I haven't had a lot of different equipment. I have mostly budget guitars and I've change some pickups etc. but mostly I wish I hadn't. I've had 4 or 5 different small combo amps and were never really happy with the way they sounded. About 10 years ago I was given a 50 watt Yorkville keyboard amp . It's a very simple solid state amp but it's a closed back cab and uses a 10" woofer and a tweeter. So, much like a stereo speaker, it has a high fidelity sound. And it handles my Boss ME 50 quite well and sounds great. To me. I'll keep using it until one of us croaks.

  • @robvee532
    @robvee532 Před 10 dny

    I like Glen and he's not wrong.....most of the time. I am also a touring guitar player (I've played all over the world) and I have my own tricks to sounding like me anywhere I go on any amp I use. 9 times out of 10 if you play out, it'll sound like crap anyways so concentrate on your playing and your band. Sound checks are ok but useless most of the time because when you dial everything in when the club is empty it will be wayyyy different when you have a lot people come in after. The trick is, don't be so f-in picky because no one cares but you, deal with what you have (and buy a decent compressor). 2nd, look cool and confident and DON't tinker constantly on stage (deal with it and just play), it looks like amateur hour when you constantly fiddle with your gear, keep all of that on the down low. Most of the cheaper guitars and amps these days are pretty damn good compared to the cheap crap from the 80's - 90's. I just bought a Chinese made Gretsch and other than a few things that I "prefer" (tuners and bridge saddles) everything including the pickups included were great and no need to be changed out. Its funner to practice and hear yourself get better than tinker with gear. I have a ton of gear and I dial them in to all pretty much sound the same so i can use it all play to play with the bands that I play with. Develop your own tone and keep with that, no one wants to see and hear you tinkering with your gear at practice or playing live.

I haven't played in a long time & have been unpacking a lot of things but am sweating it out because I haven't found my old gigantic Bad Horsie. Hopefully it's deep in a box somewhere instead of the potential one of the movers liked it or I've even wondered if I forgot about it & left it at the biker church when I helped them start their band. Between hauling anhydrous ammonia & propane & being way too busy & had to pour myself into my job when it got cold, heck I didn't know whether I was going or coming & I had to leave the band because I began working probably 100+ hours a week even though my logbook said 70 hours. Most of the replies/reactions I have seen have one thing in common, they all seem to think Jim made conclusions when he ends with 'What do you think?' These seem (to me at least) people who have come to conclusions themselves that they arn't happy with. It's like I'm sorry your conclusion makes you feel you've pointlessly spent a few grand more than you needed too on a guitar because you believed Paul 'watch me hit a piece of wood with a mallet' Reed 'Its costing you three grand more because I've done this pointless action' Smith when he told you there was this stuff called tone wood. I'm so glad you found this video useful! As I mentioned in the video (I think), BandMix seems to have the best interface, but they provide zero guidelines to their user base on best practices, and this results in an enormous waste time. Of course, their site could also use a major overhaul. Over the years my best luck, oddly enough, has been Craigslist. Lots of wasted time from respondents there, as well, but that is probably just because so many musicians are flakes, lol! My new bassist came via Craigslist, and I had another one who found me there as well a few years back. He was a great player & cool dude, but family commitments eventually led to his departure. If I had the coding chops or the $$ to hire someone, I would take a shot at building a great site for finding bandmates! Alas, my hands are full with my band, but who knows, maybe someone will see this & build a better site! Thanks for watching & for your comment!

    8:37 Tone vs. sound in the hands: I'm not sure such a distinction can be made. And yet 10:55 "By 'sound' *I mean the tone* & any other distinct qualities a particular guitar may have." So tone and sound are separate things in the hands, but not when it comes to a guitar? The way "sound" is used with the hands might be better put as technique or style, I would argue. It's the thing a player can control that makes them unique. A hybrid picker isn't going to sound like an alternate picker or a sweeper or a legato player. Tone has to come from the hands and this tone is what makes part of the sound. That's why Jeff Beck doesn't sound like Paul Gilbert. They get differing tones/sounds by using different techniques and styles--in this case fingers vs. alternate picking--things inseparable from the hands. So, technique/style + tone from technique and gear = sound. If anything is to be learned from all this it is: 1) Gear is a matter of personal taste, experimentation, experience, knowledge of how best to use it, and budget. 2) Some variables in a guitar signal chain have more impact than others. 3) Which of these variables has the most impact is subjective based on #1. Some variables in the chain can be compensated for by other variables (ex: a high gain amp/boost/pedal can compensate for lower output pickups). 4) Most players would be better served by learning how to better use the gear they have than buying more gear, especially new gear. 5) Most importantly, *spending a lot of money on gear produces diminishing returns in high gain situations.* And yet many players know this yet still acquire massive amounts of gear because it produces a feeling of satisfaction to "have it all," or at least all of what one likes. *The problem with #1-5 is CZcams influencer business models often depend upon getting viewers to spend money on products and services, either directly or indirectly.* ("I'm not sponsored by Marshall, but, for an inexpensive alternative to the real thing, check out my Marshall cabinet impulse responses in the video description below.") This business model produces a huge conflict of interest on the part of content creators as far as objectivity and transparency. When it comes to modern CZcams influencers, viewers are essentially watching what used to be called infomercials. As for the viewer, unless one is absolutely convinced that what an influencer is peddling matters, it's best to watch for knowledge, ignore the stuff being sold, and let the influencer make money off of ads. Depending upon the skill of the influencer and the production quality of the video, separating the knowledge from the product/service pitch can be difficult. I do my best to avoid getting sucked into the content creator ecosystem. After nearly 20 years, I only use subscriptions as bookmarks to channels and have only two--one to Euge Valovirta and the other to Ben Higgins--so I can find their content quickly--content that sells me minimal things. The rest of the time I rarely like, subscribe, or comment, because I don't want to be sucked into the echo chamber of the CZcams algorithm where I get mostly the same videos suggested to me every day. Logging onto CZcams without signing into one's account is a good way to get out of the unrealized pattern of what one usually watches. However, I did like and comment on this video because I felt it presented good information. Thanks so much.

The guitar industry is full of snake oil salesmen but it really is buyer prerogative on whether you get sucked in or not. I'd love to see him have that discussion with Jimmy Page. Glenn has knowledge, but he's an arrogant jerk about it nowadays. He's NOT always right, in fact, he's wrong about a lot of stuff. As a beginner I’m glad to have Glenn’s insights it’s saved me some money and made me less self conscious of my playing knowing that it’s my technique and not the gear I use so now I can focus on what’s important in my learning as I am self teaching

    As a musician who's been playing years, generally electric guitars sound is a combination of a few things: Speakers, pickups, strings, style of play, and the amplifier you are using. English amplifiers sounds a lot warmer and lack the 'crunch' or soviet and american amps (I'm excluding fender in this because they are godfathers) By and large I have found that your equalization and compression is what makes your tone more than anything outside of playing style

    I used to use a Digitech multi effects pedal. I always recieved compliments on my sound, but when they saw that pedal I got funny looks, lol. And like yourself, I've seen bands with thousands of dollars of gear that sounded awful, and others with a Squire into a tube screamer into a Fender blues junior that were awesome!

      @ClarkColborn Před 21 dnem

      I had a Digitech that I used on some early demos, & it had some really decent sounds in it. I actually kept one guitar solo I did with it on a demo & used it on my first album. It was this fierce, but kind of lo-fi thing that was just perfect for the tune, so I kept it! Thanks for watching & for the comment. :-)

    Once long ago, at someone else's house, about to join a jam - I had to use a completely unfamiliar amp. I'd only owned one amp for a couple years, but I thought, I'll bet I can get 'my' sound out of this. And I turned knobs until I thought it sounded like me. And I found it was me, not the guitar or the amp, which made me sound like me. Since then I've tried switching a few things. There are indeed differences to be had, even in high-gain sound. But the funny thing is, I found that when I changed those things, I tended to change my playing -- so the overall result was largely the same. My takeaway is this: once you've determined on how you want to sound, there's not much that can take you away from it.

    The thing is all those "minor differences that don't matter that much"things affecting tone add up, also the thing with Glenn's point of view is a long with what you're saying, he's going for a specific sound and getting that sound consistently, he's going for a modern high gain metal sound,, he's not really interested in finding unique individual sounds (or tones ) coming from a different point of view guitarist used to bring a lot of guitars into the studio for different colors and inspiration for the sounds (and tones) seems like Glenn as a producer would discourage that in favor of a more consistent tonality in the studio. Just an observation not a criticism, different guitars made of different wood with different pickups will sound radically different in tone if that's what you're wanting, the same thing with amps, as a Gen x guy not a boomer or millennial I saw in the 80s the trend to have everything high gain humbucker and Floyd Rose so every guitarist pretty much had the same sound, in the 90s with grunge guitarist went more towards having their own individual sounds with cheap and quirky guitars now it's fallen back on everyone having a tight specific tone that is the standard active pickups and ever tune bridges with high gain or flat response clean desktop amps . So I don't think Glenn is proving a point against tone ingredients as much as reinforcing his own ideas in the tone ingredients he wants

    Wasn't expecting the position you gave at the start. I only came across Glenn's channel a few months ago and seen maybe no more than half a dozen videos so far. I'm not an engineer in the same field as Glenn, but the title did seem like it would be yet another case of someone with no engineering experience, or little of it, trying to argue that the engineer is wrong without applying any of the relevant sciences. I do like that you asked for people to watch your video until the end, a lot of people don't bother listening/reading the end of an argument before trying to counter. I even encounter people that would arguing against me, sometimes even arguing the same thing I am, but getting their refutation of mine wrong because even the first sentence is too long for them to bother reading. Some of them would even find the first sentence of this post too long to read.

    • @ClarkColborn
      @ClarkColborn Před 25 dny

      Right, he's a gen-x, as I told the guy in my story who called him that, lol. And as I explain in the last half of my video, in the years since that particular Schenker concert, I have changed my stance on "tone is in the hands" to this: *tone* is in the gear; a particular guitarist's *sound* is a combination of playing style, technique, nuances of execution, and tone. Thanks for watching & commenting!

      @@ClarkColbornYeah... it's a complicated thing. A bit of truth to it all... depends how you look at it. YEARS ago (1987 I think) I read an interview with David Gilmour and he said that he was basically using a bunch of BOSS pedals at the time and that he could just walk out of a music store with almost anything and it would still sound like him.True with a lot of guitarists.

    • @ClarkColborn
      @ClarkColborn Před 25 dny

      @@thezeroroom Yeah, I think many of us over-complicate our rigs with exotic gear, and JHS often illustrates this on their channel. I've done it, and now I'm in kind of a minimalist mode, trying to really scale my rig down. Mostly 'cuz I don't have roadies anymore, lol. Style is definitely in the hands, and tone is probably less important than all of us guitarists think, lol! 🙂

    ONE THING EVERYONE IS MISSING IS THE WIRING OF THE GUITAR MAKES A HUGE DIFF IN CLARITY IF CHEAP MEATAL USED FOR POTS SOUND LIKE CRAP CHEAP WIRING AND CAPASITORS SOUND LIKE CRAP WAY MORE IMPORTANT TO UPGRADE WIRING THEN PICKUPS THE PICKUPS ALTHOUGH UNBRANDED THAT CAME IN MY HAMER GUITAR SOUNDS THE LOUDEST OF ALL PICKUPS IVE HEARD AND CLEAR BUT I NOTICED IS THAT IT ALSO HAS THE BEST QUALITY WIRING ETC. SO ?

    TONE IN REALITY IS ALL ABOUT EQ SPECTRUM BE IT A SPEAKER A MICROPHONE OR AN ACTUALL EQ THESE ARE THE ONLY THINGS THAT EFFECT TONE .NOT CLARITY NOT VOLUME TONE TONE WOOD IS TRUE FOR ACOUSTIC GUITARS BUT NOT FOR ELECTRIC PICKUPS CANT HEAR THE TONE COMMING FROM THE BODY .BUT THE TONE RESPONSE OF AN ELECTRIC RESONATES THROUGH THE BODY OF GUITAR INTO THE PLAYER AND THATS WHERE IT MATTERS HOW THE MUSICIAN FEELS WHEN PLAYING THEIR INSTRUMENT BUT IT DOESNT TRANSLATE INTO THE SIGNAL CHAIN
