Is Jim Lill Scientific or Not?

  • A snarky comment on one of my other videos got my hackles up & I felt the need to stand up for Jim Lill. We don't know each other, we've never met, but I get tired of people criticizing those of us who are on CZcams trying to give other guitarists some help by sharing our experiences. Whether it's life experience (like me) or by doing experiments (like Jim & a host of others), we're simply trying to give our fellow guitarists a better starting point on their gear purchases. Guys like Glenn Fricker, Jim Lill, myself, and many others have spent (and often wasted) enormous amounts of time &/or money in the pursuit of tonal excellence and are offering our thoughts. But the internet being what it is, there are always who feel the need to criticize and yet have nothing constructive to offer. This is my metaphorical digitus medius, or as the Romans called it, digitus impudicus to those who complain and do not offer alternatives.

    Thanks to the algorithm to show me your videos. I already knew of Glenn (but don't watch him that much anymore) and I absolutely adore Jim! Seems I found a chill dude with a great perspective and calm manner that will hopefully bringt joy to my feed in the future. Subscribed.

    Jim's videos are The most valuable information and The greatest contribution to guitarrists, longside with The dudes that started this debunks (will's easy guitar, dkg custom, etc.) but Jim took it to another level!

      There are lab test done on research gate, way before Jim and others did them.
      You may not like some of the results, but there is a small sonic difference while changing materials in e.guitar.
      SCIENCE!!!

    Sorry Clark. You didn't know that all the commenters are experts? haha Great post.
    LA Guns was up at the Vixen in McHenry last night. I didn't see them, but Traci is a pretty good player.

      lol, I know, right? Thanks for watching & your comment. I haven't seen those guys in years, glad to hear Traci hasn't lost it. I don't think I've ever been to the Vixen, how big of a venue is it?

      @@ClarkColborn It's new. I'm 5 minute drive 15 walking. I still haven't gone yet. Lol Yngwie, Stryper, have played there. Many local acts. Probably regional too. There (Vixen in McHenry) on the socials to check out. Keep up the great info. Like to see local neighbors.

    I think the first video of yours I have seen (its YT I'm never sure lol), Nice to see someone talking straight about Jim's vids. Most of the replies/reactions I have seen have one thing in common, they all seem to think Jim made conclusions when he ends with 'What do you think?' These seem (to me at least) people who have come to conclusions themselves that they arn't happy with. It's like I'm sorry your conclusion makes you feel you've pointlessly spent a few grand more than you needed too on a guitar because you believed Paul 'watch me hit a piece of wood with a mallet' Reed 'Its costing you three grand more because I've done this pointless action' Smith when he told you there was this stuff called tone wood. I find it funny that none of their arguments have changed, its still 'This is tone wood, PRS told me its better and their guitars are expensive so they must be right'

      Oh man, are you ever spot on! I think Jim does an awesome job, and most importantly, he provides information that the open-minded among us will find truly useful. Thanks for watching & for commenting!

    Any engineer worth their salt would tell you that Jim Lill’s “neckless” guitar is anything but that. It actually has two necks in the form of the boards that run between the two benches. If one of the functions of a guitar neck is to maintain the distance between the nut and the bridge under string tension (and it certainly is), then Jim’s guitar has two necks. If, as Jim and others claim, only the bridge, strings, pickup and the nut will affect tone, then Jim has failed to prove anything because he has introduced a fifth element into the mix without realizing it. Very unscientific. Jim can keep making his videos and there will always be a certain number of people who will be enthralled because they haven’t thought things through. Here’s another thing that a lot of people haven’t considered: If wood and construction methods had nothing to do with tone then clip-on tuners wouldn’t work on solidbody guitars.

    • @ClarkColborn
      @ClarkColborn  Před 9 dny +1

      I think what Jim & others are saying is that tone - that is to say, the frequency response - is only affected minimally by the type of wood, so minimally as to be negligible. And I'm not even sure Jim suggests that; I think he does his experiments and asks the viewer to draw their own conclusions, for the most part. I could be wrong. In any event, serious question for you: how would YOU perform an experiment to determine how much tone comes from any given component? It has to be measurable, and repeatable. I have ideas, but they are beyond my time & budget constraints, so I would honestly be interested in seeing & hearing how others would test this. Thanks for watching & commenting!

      @@ClarkColborn Thanks for your reply. I’m neither an audio engineer nor a CZcamsr, but I do get turned off a bit when people try to get at the science behind something as personal and emotional as music. My comment was addressed specifically to the question of whether or not Jim Lill is scientific . I don’t think he is.

    I'd love to know what percentage of the "waaaah, not scientific" crowd are also the "my $X0,000 nitro-finish guitar with the new $999 Gibson Vintage Pickups sounds to me like blah blah blah so you're wrong" sort of tone and gear snobs.

      Earlier today I was looking at reverb listings to see how much I could get selling my 2014 gibson.
      I was baffled to see that not only I could sell it for more than the price I bought it new, but also that apparently that I own a 'one of a kind gibson instrument with long neck tenon, imoproving the warmth of the tone by a sdignificant amount'
      It's a solid body guitar, it doesn't hold tune well, and it's seriously mid. ... Oh well I'll sell it to a sucker and use that money to buy myself a DIY mic, like those Jim Lill tried x3

    • @ClarkColborn
      @ClarkColborn  Před 4 měsíci +1

      My guess is that most of the whiners will fall into that crowd. I like nice gear, but anyone who says they can hear the effects of the type of finish a guitar has is blowing smoke. At least in my experience. Haven’t seen anyone yet that can do it in a blind test, lol. Thanks for watching & commenting!
