Himalayan Shift Drum Failure
zhlédnutí 949Před rokem
The Himalayan was not shifting gears properly. I hoped I could solve the problem from just behind the right hand cover but things just got worse. The gear shift didn't stop at the bottom of first or the top of fifth. Out with the donk and into the deep we go. The shift drum has just completely sheared off at one end.😩😩😩

Dwellingup Insta360 Trial Run on Royal Enfield 500cc Himalayan.
zhlédnutí 765Před rokem
I just bought an Insta360 One X2 (should have waited two weeks for the X3 to come out - DOH!) so I thought I'd go for a little ride up the hill to Dwellingup in Western Australia and see how it performs. I rushed and didn't check my settings before I left - rookie mistake. Impressed by the stable footage and the invisible mounts. I was even impressed by the sound capture. The internal camera mi...

Hey man, did ya ever get the dyno done? Curious about your results! Love the video by the way, I like your style!
I have not had the Dyno done yet. I'm about to head on off on a 3 month ride across Australia and would like to get it done to get my fuel economy at its best. I've put the original cam back in and the bike is a lot nicer to ride now. The NMW cam was too lumpy for day to day riding and it made the valves sooo noisy - it sounded like an industrial sewing machine from 1888.
Just subscribed
Thanks Danny. I hope to get some more vids out soon. I've been off the bike due to a back injury for 12 months but ready to start riding and exploring soon.
Sir have couple of questions… can you cruise around 65-80mph? Without the engine getting stressed? Another most importantly are you facing any problem with the engine??
Hi. I can cruise at 110kph (the max speed limit in Western Australia). The Engine is going strong with no more problems. It can be a little hard to start due to high compression so I might go back to the stock Cam to take advantage of the decompression mechanism. The current cam also make the engine sound like a sewing machine.
0:59 Sir, did you say 300 km/hr easily. That's ~186 miles/hr....more than double the stock 411cc. Geez.
A little joke.😁 I've had it to 130kph.
Nm as 'Nut Measurement' (Apparent Machinist's joke.)
Newton-Meters. Sir, you've quite broad set of skills; thanks for sharing.
Nice work..
I have a 218 Carby version too (40 000kms on clock) with a Ht-b cam here in NZ, opened up airbox and standard exhaust. I did run 17 pilot and 130 main and got about 19-20km/l on old carb. Bike had issues leaning out to much from new on constant throttle which bigger jets made a bit better but never solved. I changed carb for a new one about 5 000km ago, so back running standard 15 and 125 jets and issue is solved. Get over 26 km/l with same riding style now. I find bike runs a bit hotter, so will go up the the 17 pilot make things a bit more rich. maybe that will work for you regarding MPG. Currently toying with going for HT 477 or the 500. Can one go back standard if 500 does not work out? How many k's have you put on it? cheers Kiwiscoot
Thanks for the tip re the jets and carby. 26km/l would be real nice. I've been off the bike for a while to to a back injury so I've only done a a few thousand KMs since rebuild. I can't see why you could not go back to a stock pot and piston but I certainly won't be. The 500 is so much better.
Namastey sir, i naveen kumar from india, even i ve installed the same 6sigma jet kit in my himalayan carburetor and also i tried installing washers in diaphragm needle to height adjusted but i felt laag in the peeformance in higher speed that too in 3rd gear to 4th gear. Could u please the combination u ve tried in ur himalayan carburetor.... Presently my carb has 17.5 pilot jet and 132 main jet with two washers to lift diaphragm needle..
I can't recall what I ended up with sorry. I'll see if I can find some video of it.
@@MORK-TV thank you sir🙏🏻
Brilliant! Small end can’t stand the strain, so fit a big bore kit and hot cam!
I like to push boundaries Jim. It's still holding together. Pretty sure it was my neglect in changing the oil that caused the piston to break down. The small end of the conrod was fine.
@@MORK-TV way to go! I once tuned a Vespa until it would hardly run, so I shouldn’t be one to criticize!
Oh...no...😢😢😢
It all worked out in the end and the bike is still running fine.😁
Great, you had to virtually build a new bike to do something that the Royal Enfield engineers couldn’t do from the get go. It appears that RE is only interested in producing underpowered 350cc/411cc engines, what a pity. Royal Enfield has been living in the past so long it thinks it is the future. I’m not prepared to invest multiple hundreds of dollars just to bring a bike up to substandard.
I like to tinker, Doug and I enjoy riding the Himalayan. Plenty of more expensive bikes have even more expensive repairs from time to time.
@@MORK-TV ….. Very true. I admire your tinkering ability. I can do the basics but you sure don’t want me doing anything too fancy. I was hoping RE would bring the Scram to Canada but I suspect that pipe dream will not come true anytime soon. Pity that. Oh well, keep tinkering I love watching videos of people with that skill set.
Nice work
The other Bikes should be in the Rear View mirror IMO, Damn good views But!
Subbed - stock 411 has 190-200 psi. also cheap chinese instruments vary by 10%
The starter issues is definitely due to too much compression. I'm trying to decide if I put the stock cam back in so that it has the decompression mechanism or if I put another foot gasket back in, or if I try to take some more out of the compression chamber. Lower compression would mean I could run lower grade fuel if I wanted to. I have had to put the bike in 5th and rock it back and forth to get the engine on a different stroke to get it to even turn over when it is cold.
czcams.com/users/shortsyADAsuqAa6Y?feature=share EFI and bigger throttle body
Have you still got the cat in it?.. Me too have the hitch cocks clutch ,but the clutch is at the end of the travel... I have the 465cc BB and the tec cam... YSS front and back.. Mines running abit clattery ,,,maybe its not bedded in enough yet, but it is getting better......Regards
No Cat in mine @lipsee100. I don't think it ever had one. I made a new Clutch button on the lathe which is 2mm deeper than the original. It has made it a bit easier to knock it into neutral but I was hoping it would do more. I've been a bit lazy lately and haven't put the video together yet.
Nicely done!
Thanks!
I just bought a 2021 demo Himalayan and it came with a heavy reinforced back rack, so that is one thing I don't have to worry about. I like the way you made the box attachment way, and the window lock is brilliant. I bet you (like me) spend a lot of time brainstorming at Bunnings.
Thanks @3goldfinger. Yeah, Bunnings make a fortune out of me for sure.
i love the function over form design as it suits the Himalayan. I'd like to do the same thing, but make a rack to replace the rear seat instead, like a smuggler case.
So why couldn't re just do this and make their himalayans 500cc?? So many comments about wanting more power from himalayans that they've gone and made a whole new 450.....just make these ones into 500s, doesn't make sense!!
If this was me I'd put it all back together and back on the bike and look down to see a cog still sitting on the work bench! Uurrrmmm....
Great post and I hope you stick with the Himalayan. Gave you a subscription today and look forward to future content, greetings from an Irishman living in Latvia
Thanks Harry. The Himalayan is testing me lately but I do love riding it. It will be in my shed (and hopefully on the road) for a while yet.
Thanks for taking the time to make the video get my Himalayan tomorrow which is replacing a gs1200 :) looking forward to it.
You're Welcome. I know a couple of guys in Perth here that have swapped their GS's for the Himalayan and say that they just enjoy riding them so much more. I'm sure you will too.
@@MORK-TV thanks :) yep I'm really glad I did it loving the Himalayan
Hello great material very nice mounted ;)
Thanks. I'm loving the Insta360 One X2. Keen to try out some new angles now that I am used to the results.
nice job
Thanks for the visit
and checking the gas leakage with a compression tester, hahaha, dork ! you know why
What a great weekend! Thanks for coming Kane, your kitchen sink was very useful
Yes it was!
Thanks very much. That looked like a lot of fun, especially with the other blokes on similar bikes. Thanks for taking us along on the ride.
Glad you enjoyed it
+1 for the dyno :)
Where can this kit be purchased?
I bought it locally from a guy in Perth but I think it is from NMW Racing. I thought I had the Himalayan Tools Cam but saw NMW stamped on it when I striped it down again to fix the Transmission. Observant hey?😬😬
Dear Sir, I live in NSW and I have the same model Himalayan as you do. I was very delighted to see when you got the bike started for the first time Would it be fair to say that the starter motor required more amperage to kick the bike over ( initially at least ) due to the higher compression of the bigger piston? Great work by the way and I really enjoyed watching the video! ( I learned a few thing along the way also ) thanks again for posting your video
Thanks Alan. I thought similar. I tried a lithium battery with more CCA but it still struggled so I replaced the positive an earth cables with bigger cable and it still struggles. It might be that the starter motor itself needs replacing. I'm pushing around 10.2:1 compression now. I might have to drill in a decompression valve🥴🥴
Ok you are subscribed & I hope you cross your 500 mark quickly & give us the dyno results, because I want to upgrade too.
Thanks. It might happen sooner. I need to get my fuel consumption down without running it too lean.
Very well done!
Cheers David.
Hi mate. 2017 carburetor model. No engine mods yet. When I removed the airbox to fit the new YSS shock, I decided to leave the airbox off so I could acces the top adjuster on the shock. Therefore I had to make an inlet manifold and a new battery box. Used the original pipe from the airbox as a mount for a re usable, oiled air filter. Made a new battery bracket. The whole system now breathes and flows better and is smoother. The YSS adjustable front and rear suspension is awesome. The rear seat is used as mounting point for luggage I made using bolts I made to lock into the seat retaining mount. More to come. Cheers and keep up the good work. Pete
Sounds like a good set-up, Pete. Some more room around the air intake would be nice.
Great job👍🏽
Cheers👍. I hope to give it some real world testing this weekend. Hopefully my welds survive.
Alright, you got another subscriber. But I have to say, the regular dramas and engine detonations aren't filling me with confidence in the Himmy.
This one was all my fault. Ill keep you posted with a dyno run soon.

I think I have worked out that the bolt (30) holding the Star Index (29) vibrated loose (maybe I forgot Loctite?). This caused it to jamb up in the Gear Shift Cam Drive Plate (40). That's been the cause of it sticking in gears. Me smashing on the gear shift (39), trying to get it in and out of gears, has fractured the Shift Drum (28) and then tightening the bolt has sheared it in two. The rest of the gears, selector forks, thrust washers etc all look to be OK and slide up and down on their respective shafts as I think they should. The drivetrain never sounded odd or felt sluggish, so I think I am lucky there was no damage done elsewhere. A few new parts from Hitchcocks and a few less dollars in my wallet and I might make it out on a real adventure one day. It could have been worse.😀
Any idea why the piston was like that, hot running or beat about as small end went?
Bad lubrication after I did not change the oil following a burnt clutch from riding tracks beyond my skill level.
Thanks for the video, I'm quite interested in RE Himalayan problems, since I own one. I once had a transmission gear fail in a 1978 Yamaha XS 650. The dealer was offering no relief from their regular service prices, since the warranty was gone. I fixed it myself with a used part, since they could not assure me that a part purchased through them wouldn't have the same defect.
Thanks, John. I've had a few - mostly due to my stupidity and ignorance. Some are trying to convince me to buy a Jap bike, but I just love riding the Himalayan. This one is fixable. I just hope I can build some confidence in my repairs enough to go on a big adventure.
Please keep up the good work. Fascinating to watch the rebuild.
Cheers. Hopefully I won't have to do it a third time😁😁😁
Thats the Himi I'd like as a first bike. The new one coming fuel consumption will def be up. Am hoping they add a bigger tank to compensate. (The thing I like re the lower Bhp Enfields is good fuel consumption and am not keen on the looks of moderm adv/tourers etc, although the Moto Morini and Tenere are nice) Still not sure which bike am gonna get as a first bike.
A bigger tank would be a good addition.a othe 3 to 5 litres. I'm going to re jet while the engine is out again to see if that helps. I think it is running rich.
NMW Performance in India has the Big Bore kit that includes the head, forged piston, cams and computer. Hope I dont need anything else.
A better muffler/silencer and a better air cleaner and snorkel delete will make a nice difference.
Why don't people install a computer fan on their oil coolers.Especially doing off-road.
I'm not sure that a computer fan would stand up to the dust and vibration. And in this case, I'm not sure any cooling would have saved me.😩😩😩
Great to see the Himi taken to the next level - cracking video and commentary. Thanks mate 🙏
Thanks for subscribing @xcace. I hope to have some more episodes up soon.

Thanks Mark I'm glad you enjoyed it. The subscribers are slowly rising towards a dyno inspired episode. Stay tuned.
Hello, very good work, have you see temperature of the engine?
Thanks Fernando. I have not taken a temperature reading but I do have access to an Infra-red camera so I'll include that in my next video.👍
Well done mate, great video. Can you give a breakdown of the total cost of the rebuild? I am curious to compare it with the price here in Canada.
Thanks for that Dave. I had not actually kept track but just doing a quick scan back through my bank statements I've come up to about $2000 I think by the time I add oils and other consumables. $81.30 Cables $275.00 chain $250.00 headwork $900.00 piston $180.00 HD Clutch $72.99 OEM clutch $76.00 jets $30.00 sparkplug I've added a few other things too like Pivot Pegs $260, Fuel Cans $125, SRC crash bars, brake guards $420, Pannier racks $400. Soft pannier Bags & tank Bag $420. So I've probably spent in the range of $4,000AUD with stuff I've forgotten about. Overcapitalized in other words - but good fun anyway.
Nice vids of the Himalayan experience
Thanks, Glad you liked it Jeff.
