  • What's that mysterious ticking noise? It's a 410cc piston trying to escape piece by piece from the inside of my engine. This is the discovery, the teardown and the beginnings of a bigger, more powerful, 500cc Himalayan.
Thanks to Oz Himalayan for the piston and pot and advice so far.

Great video and nice to see the insides of the Himmy. Looking forward to the next instalment.

Thanks. I have just put the engine back in the bike. I have one more day of Covid isolation to go and then I'll be able to get some oil and fuel and see if it starts. Then the video editing begins. So long and thanks for all the fish.

Brilliant! Small end can’t stand the strain, so fit a big bore kit and hot cam!

I like to push boundaries Jim. It's still holding together. Pretty sure it was my neglect in changing the oil that caused the piston to break down. The small end of the conrod was fine.

@@MORK-TV way to go! I once tuned a Vespa until it would hardly run, so I shouldn’t be one to criticize!

First, I have to say I admire your pluck and abilities to do this sort of serious engine work. Work I hope never becomes necessary on my Himalayan. I was wondering how many miles were on the engine when this happened and if you had any thoughts on why it happened? Great video. I look forward to watching more.

Thanks for your comment Scooter. The bike had done about 26,000. It's a 2018 and I'm the second owner. I think it failed due to me not changing the oil. I think I destroyed the oils lubrication properties when I cooked the clutch on a very difficult, steep, deep sand/limestone track. That overheated the oil ànd I kept riding it. Lesson learned.

@@MORK-TV Hi Kane Can you tell me what 500cc kit you used? Regardin overheating,,I,m planning a long trip into Africa,, and I,m considering fitting a oil cooler off a BMW R850 ,,it attaches the same side as the Himalayan it looks the same only abit bigger,,,,,

@@lipsee100 I got it from a guy in Perth Western Australia - CZcams czcams.com/channels/whUc5x0bUEnA0Y4XQ7g-_g.html. It might be a NMW Racing Piston, I think.
I think my overheating was purely to do with slipping the clutch in deep sandy hill tracks. It would be interesting to put an oil temp gauge on and do some testing.

Hi Kane only just come across your video in regard to the weeping head bolts i replaced mine with 40mm bolts and10,000 kms later no more weeping you wonder why factory didn't do this, anyway eagerly following your progress have you made the next video.
    Cheers

Thanks Klano. I've upgraded the head bolts to 40mm too. New video is just about to go live. I hope to get some on-road video. I need to get hold of a Go Pro but I'm spending all my pocket money on the bike at the moment.

If this was me I'd put it all back together and back on the bike and look down to see a cog still sitting on the work bench! Uurrrmmm....

Why don't people install a computer fan on their oil coolers.Especially doing off-road.

    • @MORK-TV
      @MORK-TV  Před rokem +1

I'm not sure that a computer fan would stand up to the dust and vibration. And in this case, I'm not sure any cooling would have saved me.😩😩😩

This one was from Bunnings in Australia. It's a Kinchome brand.

Any idea why the piston was like that, hot running or beat about as small end went?

Bad lubrication after I did not change the oil following a burnt clutch from riding tracks beyond my skill level.
