      Yes this is a good point, I guess the emphasis here is more on what happens downstream of having the compositional idea. I’m using composition in the broad sense of the term I guess. Sorry if you felt misled!

    Thanks Vince for the useful tips, I became your new subscriber and accept my compliment for your music, I am delighted! I would like to share another good way (my favorite) to make the process of loading presets easier. I set up the track instrument (eq, compression, saturation, etc.) the same way as you do, but I write down a few notes or a pattern and then create an Apple loop from it, so it becomes possible to listen (preview) the AIFF right in the project, but when you drag this AIFF (Apple loops) to the track instrument, it becomes not audio but already midi, but with all my settings. This trick also works great with Vienna Ensemble Pro - samples and plugins are loaded on another computer. And when I need, for example, cello staccato, but I don't know from which library what will suit me best in a new BBC, EWQL, HZ or CSS project, then I just listen to pre-created Apple loops from different libraries and drag it to the instrument track. Also, these loops are sorted by categories (folders) and are not stored on the system HDD. You can also assign Apple loops library icons for visual comfort, but then I use AudioFinder or Finder mac OS for this. This method is also useful when I only need audio, for example Cyball Rolls (so as not to load plugins), then I just drag it to the audio track, if I need midi, then to the instrument track. It works both ways. In the same way, it is very convenient to select long instruments (drones, pads, etc.) I hope my experience will be useful for you and the viewers of the channel.

    Umm, is your video mirrored? That clock on the right and the velocity controls on the keyboard look weird. All vanity aside - I'd much prefer to see the instruments the right way than your fringes.

    • @vincecomposer
      @vincecomposer Před 2 dny

      Yep the video is mirrored because it’s easier when self shooting and as a hang over from other videos where I use keyboard overlay on the screen (makes it easier to point in the right place). Probably didn’t need to be for this one though!

  • @Fire-Toolz
    @Fire-Toolz Před 2 dny

    i don't see stacking plugins & playing with processing & doing a bunch of automation & tricks to get a weird abstract sound you have in your head as a distraction? why does it have to be "getting lost?" couldn't it just be part of the process as a composer? why does experimental sound design not count as an important part of the song? if you spend time on writing melodies & progressions, i don't see how having a field day with processing wouldn't just be one in the same. "what if i click this, what if i click that..." this is how we become inspired! this is how we discover! this is how we challenge ourselves! this is how we innovate! when i get on calls with clients i typically encourage them to do this stuff. not to the point of ruining the project of course.

    • @vincecomposer
      @vincecomposer Před 2 dny

      I agree with everything you’re saying! I would just make a distinction between more open ended experimentation in sound design vs sound design where you’re executing a specific idea you have in your head simply and efficiently. I find I often start with the intention to do the latter but end up doing the former. Even then it’s not always a bad thing as I might come up with something better than I imagined. But in my experience if in go down a rabbit hole it’s easy to lose touch with the bigger picture and get a bit fixated rather than making something that works (first pass) and then continuing to write.

    Come on, pal, we all know that live players yield better results than virtual instruments. The real problem is clients want things to sound like fine musicians recorded in a good studio, with high quality mics and kit operated by an experienced engineer - but they don't want to pay any extra for it. So we do our best with the samples, which takes a lot of time and skill.

    • @vincecomposer
      @vincecomposer Před 4 dny

      Yep agreed that clients often undervalue quality music and using samples well is definitely an art. The game we’re playing is obviously to do the best we can within a given budget constraint. I think my point was just that there are also times when it’s tempting to say ‘it sounds fine’ in situations where there is a possibility of recording live- for reasons to do with ‘efficiency’ not wanting to do the additional work involved or a comfortableness with a sample based workflow. At least that’s been the case for me in the past.

    • @HOLLASOUNDSMUSIC

  • @davidasher22
    @davidasher22 Před 4 dny

    Dude! I've been dreaming about a universal velocity control for a while now. I usually play my drums in on the Maschine but some libraries just don't work well with any of the internal velocity settings. I recently picked up Concussion from Crow Hill and they have a very similar velocity control inside the instrument. I figured something like that would be possible in Scriptor. I even checked thinking it may already exist as one of the stock midi plugins. But thats pretty much been my limit so far with Scriptor. I did attempt to generate some script with ChatGPT when it first came out but that failed miserably. That probably contributed to my aversion toward Scriptor if I'm being honest. But I'm pretty confident I can handle copying in some existing code. Very cool find!

    • @vincecomposer
      @vincecomposer Před 4 dny

      Yes i was surprised there isn’t something built into logic already tbh. The velocity processor seems close but isn’t quite the right tool for the job. It’s great that there a people out there willing to make tools like this available to the community for free.

    • @davidasher22
      @davidasher22 Před 4 dny

    Good tips. 9:31 Absolutely. Big yes to this. A walk and a digital recorder do wonders for freeing the creative bent. I reckon it's a two way process that often meets somewhere near the middle. Outside in which is external noodling with sounds for ideas and inspiration etc and inside out which is where the gestation process bubbles away and then breaks out. The whole creative process is fascinating.

Shades of the rather macabre string arrangement (The Gravel Road) by James Newton Howard in the film noir, 'The Village'. There is a key command for saving patches, but it's easy to miss because instead of "Save as Patch" it's called simply "Save...". It's in the Library section of the key commands editor. Unfortunately this means that it only works when the Library has key focus. Moreover there seems to be a bug. For me, in Logic 11, it doesn't work when you first open the Library, even though the Library does then have key focus. It only works if you tab to another pane and then back to the Library!

    Love the percussion section. That cycles hit is amazing

    I really enjoy these music breakdowns. In terms of bass for cinematic music I would love to hear your opinion and views. I tend to use too often very low notes on the cello or contrabass for too long on a track. I think that should occur on a certain moment only but I keep making that mistake. Do you have tips to structure/arranging a track without overuse the same ranges?

      Heya! Glad you enjoyed the video. It really depends on the style so I think the best thing to do is listen to music you enjoy and make notes about what is filling up the low frequencies in each section. I agree with you that it’s a good idea to leave space and to mix it up between sections. I quite commonly use a pure sounding synth sub bass to layer with the contrabasses for extra depth.

    It's really rare to come across someone on YT who can really make sense of what he's doing and play to the musicality of the plugin on hand, instead of just smashing some keys to make them sound as unnatural as possible Many thanks Vince pls keep doing what you're doing (and by the way you con'Vinvced😊 me to by the SWAM String Sections) Could you advise what external reverb your were using in this demo?

    • @vincecomposer
      @vincecomposer Před 22 dny

      Thanks for watching! I was just using the in built room modelling and no external reverb

      @@vincecomposerthanks. The room modeling seems to have been an option that could be disabled with the version you were using in this video. but as of the current version, it seems that we are just "stuck with it" unfortunately. To my understanding, the best we can do is to select the "no room" option which still applies reverberations with that metallic quality that you were referring to in the video. Have you manged at all to enable the direct raw signal with the current version (if you've update to it)?

    • @vincecomposer
      @vincecomposer Před 16 dny

      Did you check the setting I use at 10:20? External spatial user ‘on’ should give you the dry signal, i wasn’t aware that they removed this option

      @@vincecomposer yep I've seen it in your video but when I didn't find it in the current version, it was the moment when I knew that I was doomed XD... locked forever in that modeled room which still with the driest setting, sounds uncannily ambient, and not very suitable to mix the sound to your liking. especially if you need something very raw/dry for pop for example. Long story short, stay on the older version if you still want the raw sound :)
