    Hey Farmer Marshall, I am a new subscriber from California zone 9a! I absolutely loved touring your garden. I have 2 questions: -Do you have irrigation? -What zone are you in? My garden is burning up here in California, temp is 105 today. I don’t have irrigation, sadly.👩🏽‍🌾 Take care and love your channel!

      I'm in Georgia zone 8A. I don't have irrigation but I'm thinking about using the old fashion flat sprinkler hose. I can turn it upside down and use it as irrigation or almost like a drip line. Also, for the first time I just installed shade cloth over most of my garden. My garden always suffers this time of year and this helps some. Maybe it can help your garden too. Check out my playlist - How to Grow Your Vegetable Garden. Wish I could give your comment 3 hearts! Thanks for watching!

    Careful with that cardboard, it's usually high in boric acid to prevent cockroaches from eating it.. If you use a lot of cardboard in your compost or burned in your ashes, you will end up with a buildup of boron in your soil.

    Turning more frequently to increase air and aerobic bacteria helps too. Anaerobic bacteria make more smelly compost. But greens eat up air faster hence it turns smelly fast as anaerobics take over.

    There isn't a consensus on what is the proper green/brown mix. I seen 30-1, 3-1, and 1-1. Mostly, I use 1-1. My main point is that if it smells then your ratio is off. You probably need to add more brown because your level of green is too high.

    • @cantseetheforestforthetree9673
      @cantseetheforestforthetree9673 Před měsícem

      There isn’t consensus on what is the ideal ratio of browns to greens because there is a wide variation in the Carbon and Nitrogen content of different ingredients. It is known through decades of scientific research that the ideal range for the Carbon/Nitrogen (C/N) ratio for composting is between 25-30/1. Greens are defined as materials with a C/N ratio below 25/1 and browns are defined as those above 30/1, while those items which fall in the ideal range are already balanced. If you use sawdust, which can have a C/N ratio as high as 500/1 you will need a higher proportion of greens to balance that Carbon content then if you used old dry hay which can have a C/N ratio that is already much closer to balanced. Also, eggshells are not a green as they contain little to no Nitrogen, whole eggs, however, are highly Nitrogenous owing to their high protein content. Smells can come from an imbalance of C/N, but they can have other causes as well. A well balanced pile can still go anaerobic if it is not actively, or passively aerated, which will result in smells, or adding greens in large pieces that have a low surface area to volume ratio can restrict aeration within the material resulting in localized anaerobic conditions. In such cases the addition of more browns can help to mask or absorb the smell, but will lead to an imbalance later, and Increasing the surface area of the materials being composted will be the better fix.
