Bless you, Robert! As a sufferer with major depression and mild OCD, I find the tarot shuts off the “chattering monkeys” in my mind. Admittedly, at first I was scared off of tarot (RWS imagery). After some time of reflection, I purchased the RWS “tiny tarot. I thought the modest investment would give me an excuse if tarot still wasn’t for me. I used that deck (shuffling is quite the challenge) for 5mos, doing 1 or 3 card daily pulls. Last month I boldly bought a Randleigh Valentine deck, and haven’t looked back! My deck is lovely, empowering and simply a joy to learn with. I’m reading only for myself, weekly, doing more sizable spreads. The time spent learning the tarot has been wonderful! My husband fully supports me. I’ve spoken with him about my doubts/reservations, and how I’m boldly moving forward. He tells me to take what I need, and leave the rest. My tarot journey, at present, is one of learning and self-examination. Where it will lead, I have no idea! Thanks to you, Robert, I feel confident in that journey!

Arrgh! I have a strongly negative view of those little white books! And I so greatly appreciate decks, such as one designed by Julien Pacaud, that exclude those pesky things. Most of the time, I just end up struggling in terms of what to do with them. My instinct tells me to bin them because there is no educational purpose to them, and all they do is get in the way of putting the cards back in the box. Then I start thinking, What if I want to review decks in the future? Then I will have to keep them so others can see what was included in the box. What's worse, I will actually have to thoroughly read all that nonsense in order to offer a proper review. So I am stuck! Sorry, Robert, I got carried away here 😄Your review was superb! I do think that of the mass marketed RWS decks, the Centennial in a tin, is the best (for me). The only thing about it I regret is the ubiquitous copyright detail printed on every card. After this was published they started hiding the copyrights in the back designs, but they could still be seen. None of the other publishers were so insistent on displaying their copyrights. As to the borderless edition, the extra bits really bothered me, especially, a couple of cards with overhead foliage, I think the Magician was one of them showing a 'squared off' bough of a tree hanging in mid-air, appearing more like an artificially trimmed topiary than natural foliage. Yecch! Not for me. As to the Albano Waite, of the alternate colorings, I prefer the Adam Fronteras version "The Tarot" OOP from the mid-90s. It unfortunately crops some of the images as opposing to adding bits like the borderless here, but I think I prefer that. I'm an RWS nerd too, and would love to see your RWS collection. I stopped counting at about 20 different versions I have. I've always disliked the LWS of the RWS decks in the U.S. Games boxes since the 1970s. They baffled me with clusters of non-synonymous key words. They put me off reading the cards every half a dozen attempts for a couple of decades until the 90s when I simply tossed the book aside and looked into my own ideas about the cards and sought better instructions elsewhere. The only thing I embraced from Waite's book was a line to the effect that the true meaning of the tarot is in the symbols/images(?) I ran with that and skipped the text. I've found key word glossaries are best built on the experiences shared by many others than dictated by one authority.

I would highly recommend M.M.Meleen and her work. She makes Thoth-inspired decks and the guidebooks are highly valuable. I would also highly recommend reading books that actually connects RWS with Thoth, as they should be. RWS is based on the same system, just a lot of things are either made purposely ambiguous or hidden completely in RWS. THE best book that finally made me understand this is Susan Chang 36 Secrets - it goes through Minor Arcana, covering RWS imagery but also referencing Thoth/Hermetic Tarot. Its absolutely invaluable and I promise you will never see RWS images the same again. :) In my mind I dont see these as separate systems no more which allows me to draw on the knowledge of both for all readings. I would also suggest the book called Tarot Deciphered written by no other but same M.M. Meleen and Susan Chang. The book also looks at both Thoth and RWS.

I just had another look at this one. I'm living in Germany and getting the UK news at one remove - which may be a good thing, because it kind of cools down the hysteria. I'm getting comments here about how I "got it wrong" in this video, “interpreted” my own reading “badly”. I find it remarkable that a government gets in with a huge majority and within a month everyone seems to have changed their minds and now wants them out. And, though I am no card-carrying Labout party member, I wonder how much of that is staged by the right. The bottom left card in my reading does seem to predict something of this kind occurring. Let's hope that the positive predictions in the video have some accuracy over the long term. I also want to add that politics and tarot are strange bedfellows; they seem to operate at different speeds. Politics takes place in an atmosphere of extreme haste, while divination is more about slowing down and, perhaps, calming down. And here is something to think about: A tarot reader’s process belongs to himself alone. It is a communication between himself and his subconscious, or the collective unconscious. You can like it or dislike it, but there is no “actual” interpretation of the cards outside of the reader’s interpretation of the cards.

It's dense because I was writing for a particular genre that demanded that. I think that even academia is a bit more relaxed now. Sometimes I read it and cringe at how I wrote! There's so much controversy (and there was when I wrote it) around the naming of the deck by Waite and Colman Smith such that I changed my mind about 500 times around how to refer to it in this work.
