A Grand Army of Scholars: GAR Educational Reform and Mason City’s Memorial University
Join the State Historical Society of Iowa for an online learning series that focuses on the past lives of Iowans. In this week's webinar, titled A Grand Army of Scholars: GAR Educational Reform and Mason City’s Memorial University, Jonathan Neu discussed the GAR veterans’ promotion of educational reform activism in the nation’s institutions of learning-particularly colleges and universities-and their efforts to mold a rising generation of well-educated and civically engaged young citizens who would internalize a GAR-endorsed memory of the U.S. Civil War. The culmination of this GAR advocacy was the short-lived but visionary Memorial University in Mason City, Iowa.

Herbert Hoover writes in his memoirs that he broke the virgin prairie sod in Sioux County, Iowa, when he was an orphan, living with his uncle and aunt. His uncle walked behind the ox operating the plow while he sat on the back of the ox, soaking up the sun and taking in the fresh air. His uncle, if memory serves me correctly, was through his mother’s side. Their last name began with the letter “M.” What township in Sioux County or city in Iowa would that be today? Thank you.

The Mother Mosque in Cedar Rapids, Iowa is the first Mosque built in the U.S and is designated as a historical location. The Mother Mosque was started by the Habhab and Aossey families, many artifacts are kept there from the families history. My great grandfather Yousef Habhab and Sam Assoey loved Iowa and traveled much of Iowa with his horse and buggie selling eggs, fruit and vegetables making many friends along the way, later operating a grocery store in Fort Dodge. Eventually, Yousef began buying land around central Iowa. Many men in the second Habhab generation became honored veterans in WWII and went on to build successful businesses. The family has a rich history of several generations of community engagement, academic and entrepreneur successes.😮

I would like to share a passed down family story from Iowa. I heard it from my great grandma in 1955. I’m old now, & not a tribal member, but it’s true as far as I know. Because of this untold story I found my nephew about 20 yrs ago. Except for folks in SE Oklahoma, I’m the last member of my family. My nephew’s family is enrolled half as Lakota, half as Piegan. My nephew might be direct blood to me , or might be Hunka family, it doesn’t matter to me as I love him & his anyway! But there were others, between 25 to 100 folks. To make this story as direct as possible, I’m Cherokee & French on my mother’s side. My Cherokee family removed themselves from North Carolina in about 1830, promised land in Iowa by an Indian agent. When they got there along with others that desired peace, they waited in what is now called Cherokee county. My grandma was born there, but they had no town or townhall, so they waited till a census & registered her birth in Correctioville, by then she was 2yrs old! My great grandma had one friend that was a year older than her who was also French Cherokee! My nephew had also heard this story, but thought the town hall was in Correction city & couldn’t find it! I showed it to him on a map. We could be blood or Hunka family but that doesn’t matter to either of us as we share a great love! Oh, and Indian agent finally showed up & couldn’t find his Indians, so he went up to a 2 story farm house & asked the folks there if they knew any Indians as he couldn’t find his Cherokee. They invited him in & explained they had gotten on with their lives while wondering if they were forgotten! All prospered according to my great grandma, but she brought my grandma to California when she was 12 yrs old in the 1930’s there about. My father’s family is Tsalagi from Oklahoma, & to quote the Bible they begat, apparently again & again! I thought this might interest you as a little known bit of history. My immediate parents were never interested as they blended into mainstream society for work. I enjoyed your logical approach to the history of Iowa.

Where can I get a copy of the book about regional cookbooks, and what is the title? Excellent. I was analyzing your CZcams channel. Your channel looks great but needs a lot of updates. The CZcams algorithm ranks those channels. That channel updates this. For example CZcams channel and video SEO properly, right keywords, attractive thumbnails, video release schedule, etc. If you update all these fields and if someone searches on CZcams by typing your keywords, your video and channel will appear on the CZcams front page. CZcams then you will see many organic views and subscribers to your videos every day. If you want, I will help you update all this.

No concern for the rest of Mason City outside of the little bit of it. Focused on that alone but what do you think happens when y'all haven't bothered going outside downtown to show tender loving care for too. You think people won't notice or travel beyond the two blocks radius .. I'm saying common sense. Perhaps how y'all actually partake in the community already exciting and maybe then it'll be attracting people for legitimate honorable greater good . Having a bunch of crap to try convincing thru superficial tactics. That's why it's not working the way i bet y'all spend and keep trying to pretend hasn't been over financed because, clearly using Grant money and using humanitarian cover reeks ishhh. . Common sense. . How about keepin it real for once.and being about lives.. not bank book's. And for the next picture and ribbon cutting farce.. . Either way they'll notice 3 blocks in any direction from the Park you focus on. . that alone is offensive to even live here knowing what a lie already but from somewhere else, come on.. basically that's as much as getting them to come live like it's lowering them I mean how is that not part of your itinerary. So if there's not going to be any more put into it than that then again who actually believes that it's going to be anything other than a whole bunch of crap. But blaming and not being accountable and being about it. Instead of putting on a big show and trick em into moving here and how twisted beyond comprehension ... Unless it's a show.. I'm ashamed of that facts although it's not because of my choices for specific collective communities. .. this ain't highschool for Peet's sake.!! The epitome of slumlord has been my experience I'm not originally from Mason City, either corruption that is never attracting goodness..... Or doesn't that really even matter on any level?? Except for the cameras ... We can ALL DO BETTER!! PERIOD

Excuse me but there is some incorrect information in this video. Ask about the Gray Snow People seems that history is being left out, to say what happened wasn't genocide is a travesty. The government paid $20,000 for 44 million acres while the First Nation's Leaders were away at talks with government, then gave the funds to a missionary group who built a church and boarding school. When Ioway returned to village of women, children, and elders they looked across the village and said it looked like Gray Snow , everything burnt human beings, pets , livestock, shelter everyone , everything. Also don't leave out how Settlers and Buffalo Soldiers would dress in Tribes clothing and rob also attack settlers.
