Yooo the Sophie and Cassie thing makes so much sense because my best friends partner was so quiet and mousy when they came to visit (they were long distance; us in Australia them in Eastern Europe) and it was so confusing because I always heard such good things. Then over the next year I would frequently get crying phone calls from my darling best friend about their terrible behaviour and it was a fucking TRIP because huh???? i couldn’t believe it was the same person!!! and i am very familiar with the textbook narcissist behaviour of being so charming or reserved but they’re a maniac behind closed doors. I was glad to come across this episode of the podcast as well as all of Brittany’s videos and interviews, I had been raised Christian. Around the end few years of middle school (private Christian middle school in Ohio) I started to “rebel” or just move away from Christianity and consevrraivism, and because I DIDN’T KNOW how to handle that as a child. Since I started high school, in 2020-2021 and to last year 2023, I kind of circled back slowly over time to conservatism and religion. My movement away from it was quite extreme, I just hated my parents and was constantly experimenting with my gender identity and sexuality. Once I rowed through aligning with pretty much every identity of that kind, and I’m talking about not just orientation but f*tish and watching porn hyperactively to calm myself down and be able to sleep, I just realized I was just a girl, just straight, just had ADHD, I wasn’t all these things. Experimentation of the identity is not bad-that’s not my point at all here. But my recent come back to for being semi-conservative and semi-liberal and believing in the Bible from a historical standpoint is much less extreme. The relationship with religion is more delicate and nuanced than just you’re a believer or you’re not a believer. It has to be separated from your political affiliation, and the “lessons” the Bible “teaches” need to be picked and choose and actually taken to heart (live thy neighbor needs a lot more implementation). I’m not a true centrist, I really struggle to find my feelings on abortion because I don’t want babies to be killed, but also I don’t want a child to be unwillingly brought into the world or for a mother to harmed by a pregnancy either accidental or forced… My takeaway is that religion is not excuse, it doesn’t purify you, what your religion has historically doesn’t have to apply to your whole life. I don’t want to think about being evil or sinful when I eat a dessert or when I take pleasure in intimacy or crushing on men or even thinking about kissing or relationships, I don’t want to be demonized for my life and feelings. Religion is so much more nuanced and it has so much power to really damage people.
