I have been cosplaying since 2011 and I thought y’all were really respectful about everything. I just wanted to answer some of the questions you had! About weapons, generally people have prop weapons, which can be plastic, 3D printed, made from expanding foam, etc. A lot of weapons are really cartoony so they are obviously fake but if your prop weapon looks very realistic you get it checked in and marked as a prop at a prop check. On different genre/subsections of cosplay in competition it mostly just depends. A lot of cons are advertised like an anime convention, a sci fi convention, a horror convention, etc. While you’ll always see cosplays from every genre at cons generally you’ll see the most of whatever that convention is advertised as, mostly (at least personally) because of shopping and programming people go to cons specifically marketed to their interest so the things being sold, panels, and cosplayers will be more akin to their special interest. I’m an anime and video game girly so I wouldn’t go to Comic-Con for instance, not because none of that would be there but because I’m uninterested in comics and their programming will be less like what I’m looking for. However a lot of cosplayers have intersecting interests. Regular hotel guests at the convention center omg well this varies depending on the convention. I’d say at most cons regular hotel guests are pretty amazed and they’ll ask you questions and stuff, they’re generally pretty respectful especially if they have children because their kids may recognize characters (for instance back in 2011-2013 I cosplayed a lot of Adventure Time characters or now Steven Universe characters are super popular and kids love that), there are some cons such as Colossalcon that the hotels literally send out an email to any guest that try to book a reservation not through the convention that a cosplay convention is going on. This particular convention takes place at a water park and has a huge party atmosphere so kids trying to be at the water park not involved in the actual con would be completely exposed to a giant drunken nerd party with a lot of half naked people. I go to a convention every year that’s always sharing half the space with another con and weirdly enough it’s usually a cheerleading convention but this year it was a Christian convention, mostly cosplayers find it funny but stay out of those peoples way and they mostly do the same. Cosplaying another race or generally any character that doesn’t have your same attributes I’d say 99% of cosplayers agree that as long as you don’t change your skin color, tape your eyes, and wear things of cultural significance with respect (for instance don’t wear your Kimono incorrectly or some more military style characters may have nazi adjacent symbolism on them and it’s custom to remove that in America at least. As well as not using fake mobility aids just because your character is disabled.) Rule of thumb is these type of things are not costumes to the people who experience it in their day to day life, they don’t get to go home and remove their race, disability, size, etc. so you don’t treat it as a costume. Fatphobia and Racism particularly are really bad on the internet but honestly I think that’s due to the popularization of cosplay and it’s mostly people who do not cosplay and know nothing about the hobby making these comments. The majority of cosplayers understand that it is a fun hobby and not about perfectly portraying a character and tbh I’ve cosplayed at 115lbs and 260lbs and no one has ever made comments about it in person. It’s always people online, mostly men honestly, who are angry that you’re not perfectly portraying a character they are sexually attracted to and this has been perpetuated as well by the rise in OF cosplayers. I wanna make it clear that’s not OF cosplayer’s faults and so long as they’re not making heinous content involving children, inc*st, and other maybe not great things to sexualize..they work hard and they should get that bag, but for whatever reason now a lot of people who are not even involved in the community think that you have to be unbelievably disproportionate, look like a model, be exactly accurate and have an OF to be a cosplayer and trust me they’re not afraid to ask if you have links they can see 🙄 My last quick points are that most people outside of Tik Tok videos or back in the day tumblr ask blogs do not act in character at con’s and it is convention etiquette not to treat someone as their character (like if you hate their character you do not approach them on 100 like they murdered your fave or something and if they’re a character your character is shipped with you don’t just approach people like they’re your partner) There are however a lot of in character jack sparrows at conventions so don’t fret, you’d at least see one. People do cosplay totally spies as well! The cosplays you viewed in order are Osaka Dazai from Bungo Stray Dogs and Midari Ikishima from Kakegurui Lastly, I’m begging Brittany to become an anime girly, she’d be sooo good at cosplaying. I doubt you guys will see this but If y’all wanna see my work or ask any questions if you ever do a part 2 my Tik Tok and Insta are @ strawbewbie (I also know a lot of people who are interested in other subsections of cosplay, are considered “cosplay famous”, are OF cosplayers, and are cosplayers in marginalized bodies (POC, plus size, disabled, trans, etc. If you’re looking for other perspectives) Thanks! @@sarahlandry2988 no problem! I'm 25 and I've been cosplaying since I was around 13/14, now that I'm an adult with an adult life like moonlighting as a cosplayer lmao people ask me questions all the time about it, it's a very misrepresented hobby for whatever reason which has gotten so much worse since Tik Tok has skyrocketed its popularity. With a lot of people having started cosplaying in quarantine due to Tik Tok's influence even a lot of cosplayers themselves don't have a full grasp on the community because they haven't had the chance yet to be publicly going to conventions and experiencing the actual community (the online community can be sort of a dumpster fire)

My favourite part of cosplay history is the (possibly fake) story of the girl who sat in a bath tub full of sharpie ink and vodka to dye her skin grey for her home stuck cosplay
I still to this day don't know what homestuck is and at this point I'm too afraid to ask. It was EVERYWHERE when I was a tumblr girlie but I never knew what it was
Every time Brittany mentions Doctor Who, Sherlock, Tumblr and Deviant Art my heart beat surges and I gotta do breathing exercises, the internet in 2010 - 2014 was a wild time.
Brittany asked if [you] have embodied a person during school years, I once fully dressed as Nightcrawler from X-men (Cartoon highschool years, yellow jacket with red undershirt) Painted myself blue and attached a blue duct tape tail to my cargo pants, I literally embodied my hero 😩😅
the tan coat character is osamu dazai from an anime called bungou stray dogs and yes, i did recognize the character just from description while i was driving😭 (recommend the anime tho its tragic)
i made the mistake of watching 500 days of summer and then new girl in high school and zooey deschanel became my whole personality ive had my bangs cut the same way since and started collecting vintage dresses and listening to the smiths
I'm not that far in the podcast, but I think you can, unless she is asking if you can cosplay as a person who is still alive, I don't see why not. People dress up as people like Abraham Lincoln or Napoleon for instance, and people have also cosplayed as people like Trump, so I suppose the answer is yes, but also, it is a bit different than dressing up as a fictional character, I suppose, since part of cosplay (and, indeed, the challenge of it) is seeing your favorite characters in real life. There's a difference between cosplaying as Abraham Lincoln and cosplaying as someone like Sylvanas from Warcraft, for instance. Good question!
you can! for example there's been a ton of kids who went as dream (minecraft guy) for halloween before, and you can see just as many young adults who go to gaming conventions to dress as dream as well!
People do cosplay characters portrayed by real people like jack sparrow, doctors from doctor who, the guys from supernatural, etc. As well as there are people who cosplay from musicals or cult classic movies like Hamilton, The Heathers, Rocky Horror, etc. and they are trying to look like the people who play those character in some sense. I have rarely seen people cosplay real people not portraying characters in the decade I’ve been attending cons but sometimes people may especially for joke cosplays. So like Guy Fieri is a common one, John Cena, and stuff like that usually coinciding with popular memes.
one of my most recent/favorite costumes has been jessica jones, who i feel like a lot of people dress like anyway. i was actually surprised when i got recognized as much as i did.
FYI on the props thing, most people make their weapons/swords out of EVA foam, those are perfectly fine. Basically you can't bring live steel or real guns etc. Some busier cons like Anime Expo do have size limits on props tho since it's so crowded. Also it's pretty rare for normal ppl to be in a convention hotel cuz usually the con is planned like a year in advance, so people take up all the hotel rooms. At least in the hotel attached to the convention, surrounding hotels are definitely subject to some weird interactions tho haha
the first time i cosplayed was in 8th grade and I didn't have any friends so my mom was forced to come with me to the anime convention. I shiver everytime I think about it
hearing brittany mention homestuck even just by name for one second sent a chill through my body never did i think she'd know what that is but it always surprises how much of internet culture and fandoms she truly knows about
Manifesting seeing Brittany in Austin this weekend. I’ve never been and I’m visiting a friend for Halloween there. Would literally make my whole year if I saw her
For anyone else wondering, foam/prop weapons can be brought at most conventions. There will be a booth or table near the entrance where you get your weapon peace tagged. A staff member inspects the prop to make sure it meets the parameters of not being a real weapon, then will put a bright coloured zip tie or paper tag on the weapon. You can't enter the main parts of the convention without those tags
Cosplayer here! For props/weapons at conventions they have to be checked before you can enter the convention to make sure they aren't real and will be marked with a high visibility band to let people know it's been checked (like the orange tip on toy guns)
I’m glad you asked about the weapons because that’s something I only learned recently having gotten into cosplay and going to conventions. they actually have pretty struck rules of what is and isn’t allowed inside conventions. “weapons” made entirely out of wood are usually not allowed, if they feel that something is too hard/heavy they might not let it in the venue. I made a scythe and some witch staff things from scratch and I was so paranoid they wouldn’t let me into the venue with them!! at security they will examine the weapon and tag it with a zip tie or something so that visually people can see it’s fake/it has been approved
I cosplayed for years and I've been waiting for y'all to do an episode on it! I loved the episode and how respectfully the topic was handled. If Sarah put on Brittany's cardigan to be her it would technically be a closet cosplay. Using clothes that are already made or come from your closet to make a costume. Every fandom is welcome at conventions, so any costume is welcome. (Including a hot sauce packet) It's a great way to meet friends who like the same things as you. There are creeps in the community, but I've met some of the nicest/ cool people through it.
Ive cosplayed only once but I LOVED it. Even though the prop took some work, I honestly loved the process and cant wait to do it again. I cosplayed as Ash from the Evil Dead franchise. Kind of obscure to those not really into horror, but I basically threw on a blue button up some khakis and covered myself in blood. The prop was the main attraction since the character has a chainsaw hand. I made the base out of a milk jug, the rip cord (don't know the exact name for tools lol ) was a 3d printed base that had a cord and small wooden rod at the end. The arm access had a wooden dowel inside.
Would you please consider 2 hour podcasts? I could honestly listen to you both for hours. You make me laugh my out loud while I’m listening/watching. I relate so much because I grew up on the internet too. Anyways thanks so much for the laughs, Seriously the back and forth between you two is comedy gold! ❤
when yall were talking about things banned from conventions the first thing that came to my mind was the whole... situation... where that one homestuck cosplayer took a bath in SHARPIE to get gray skin... 😭
dude 31:20 has me CTFU yall have NO IDEAAAAA i cosplay and go to cons constantly and its always the funniest thing ever when theres non-convention people having to deal with it....a few yrs back there was actually a wedding happening in the same hotel that a pretty decently sized con i was at was happening😭😭 like guests were gathering and the bride and groom were taking pictures in the middle of a cosplayer-congested lobby and stuff it was actually insane . another fav of mine is the one con that is basically the frat party of conventions, its at an indoor waterpark & people go crazy and get drunk as HELL stay out till 5 am that kind of thing, and theres always a few families with kids walking around and its 😭😭😭😭 SO FUNNY......
As someone who has been regularly attending conventions as a cosplayer for years, they do regularly sell actual swords and sometimes knives at the venue. You have to be 18+ to even touch them and can't unsheathe the weapon (some places will zip tie them closed). Any prop weapons have to be checked or you will be pulled from the convention. I make the majority of my own props and foam/light plastic swords/axes/spears are fine as long as you can prove they aren't actually sharp or made of wood/metal. No prop fights, but you can pose with them for pictures as long as you aren't in someone's way.

y'all are so real for posting this while i work on my cosplay armor 😩🤚 also to answer sarah's question about weapons and props and convention regulations, cons where i live allow airsoft guns but they must have orange tips (?) on them. foam weapons are allowed tho! some conventions also have a height regulation, my local comic con had a 2m height limit lol
38:30 I agree with Sara on the little to no effort thing when it came to customing/cosplaying. I was the exact same way everytime I was the costuming/makeup specialist for my highschool theater days where I put all my effort and research into time period hairstyles and cosmetics that were appropriate for the era. I pushed it because it wanted it to be good, but the other kids in the productions did half the work that I was fully committed. (I get that if you weren't a theater/gay/finearts kid during highschool that everyone else could care less) but it threw me off the wall everytime someone does little to no effort into characters they are portraying whether for theater productions/cosplay conventions/halloween

I wanna make it clear that’s not OF cosplayer’s faults and so long as they’re not making heinous content involving children, inc*st, and other maybe not great things to sexualize..they work hard and they should get that bag, but for whatever reason now a lot of people who are not even involved in the community think that you have to be unbelievably disproportionate, look like a model, be exactly accurate and have an OF to be a cosplayer and trust me they’re not afraid to ask if you have links they can see 🙄
My last quick points are that most people outside of Tik Tok videos or back in the day tumblr ask blogs do not act in character at con’s and it is convention etiquette not to treat someone as their character (like if you hate their character you do not approach them on 100 like they murdered your fave or something and if they’re a character your character is shipped with you don’t just approach people like they’re your partner)
There are however a lot of in character jack sparrows at conventions so don’t fret, you’d at least see one.
People do cosplay totally spies as well!
The cosplays you viewed in order are Osaka Dazai from Bungo Stray Dogs and Midari Ikishima from Kakegurui
Lastly, I’m begging Brittany to become an anime girly, she’d be sooo good at cosplaying.
If you’re looking for other perspectives)
Thanks! I hope this helped!
This was so informative!! Thank you.
@@strawbewbiecosplay2022 Super well put. I was going to go all in on a comment, but you've said everything already! I've cosplayed for 10+ years and have too much to say about it lol
Take a shot every time Sarah says I’ll circle back😭
I used to be a part of a cosplay group that would cosplay as a variety of different characters (Disney, Marvel, Star Wars etc) and go to children’s hospitals and we’d hangout with the kids and it was always so fulfilling to see how excited and happy it made them when we’d come visit
This is everything 💜🙌🙌
Brittany PLEASE, do a tutorial on the buns you wear in these sometimes I am BEGGING. they are licherally everything.

Just came over to watch because I got to the point on spotify where yall told me to watch to understand better so can I just say this is impeccable timing thank you

I don’t think you guys understand how often do listen to this podcast. My comfort go-to for sleeping and background noise and a quick pick-me-up. I’m so so happy you started this show cause 90% life would be quiet and empty if it didn’t exist. Haven’t repeated content like this since Jenna marbles

My favourite part of cosplay history is the (possibly fake) story of the girl who sat in a bath tub full of sharpie ink and vodka to dye her skin grey for her home stuck cosplay
Fake? I thought that was real

Every time Brittany mentions Doctor Who, Sherlock, Tumblr and Deviant Art my heart beat surges and I gotta do breathing exercises, the internet in 2010 - 2014 was a wild time.
The way their conversations are never boring
Brittany asked if [you] have embodied a person during school years, I once fully dressed as Nightcrawler from X-men (Cartoon highschool years, yellow jacket with red undershirt)
Painted myself blue and attached a blue duct tape tail to my cargo pants, I literally embodied my hero 😩😅
nightcrawler>>>>>
the tan coat character is osamu dazai from an anime called bungou stray dogs and yes, i did recognize the character just from description while i was driving😭 (recommend the anime tho its tragic)
i made the mistake of watching 500 days of summer and then new girl in high school and zooey deschanel became my whole personality ive had my bangs cut the same way since and started collecting vintage dresses and listening to the smiths

Y’ALL please do a “stalking/cyber security” episode! Too many of us are dealing with this issue
Ok but sarah asking if you can cosplay as an actual person is a great question I don’t know the answer to
I'm not that far in the podcast, but I think you can, unless she is asking if you can cosplay as a person who is still alive, I don't see why not.
@@BEELZEBEATT I was about to come say this, I’ve seen a bunch of people that cosplay as streamers
I love how Sarah just started braiding her hair
I shiver everytime I think about it
Sarah is so right about Peter Capaldi's Doctor and Donna Noble, they would've been an iconic duo 💔
yall should definitely do one on pagents ❤
With how often y’all talk about the indie grunge tumblr revival you guys should do an episode on the indie grunge tumblr revival 🖤💜

Them being the equivalent to a PE Teacher who is substituting for your history class is the most accurate and hilarious shit I’ve ever heard😂☠️
The stars have aligned, I’m watching this while working on cosplay ✌️😩
The 12 min teaser was so good 😭😭
Much better ❤
i do love how u always come at it from a respectable angle, just informing and educating
every weekend i miss being black out drunk in a hotel lobby with my best friends dressed as naruto uzumaki

Maybe I am weird, but I don't care about any of the topics of this pod. Yet I watch every single one because I love Brittany and Sarah! ❤️

oh this is gonna be a great episode for sure. this came out right as i was binging other episodes i missed so perfect timing !
omg extended version 🤩
That trailer was slay got me so hyped for the episode 😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤
I had back bangs when I was growing out an undercut. My hair was long so it took YEARS.
RIGHT I was waiting for them to talk abt it the whole episode
I can’t stop giggling about the idea of Sexy Sauce Packet as a viable Halloween option. I would be dead on the floor crying 😂
love ur videos and love how much effort and entertainment your videos have. they crack me up and i can not wait for next week
dude 31:20 has me CTFU yall have NO IDEAAAAA i cosplay and go to cons constantly and its always the funniest thing ever when theres non-convention people having to deal with it....a few yrs back there was actually a wedding happening in the same hotel that a pretty decently sized con i was at was happening😭😭 like guests were gathering and the bride and groom were taking pictures in the middle of a cosplayer-congested lobby and stuff it was actually insane . another fav of mine is the one con that is basically the frat party of conventions, its at an indoor waterpark & people go crazy and get drunk as HELL stay out till 5 am that kind of thing, and theres always a few families with kids walking around and its 😭😭😭😭 SO FUNNY......
Yess was so excited after seeing the 12 min snippet now I can finally see what Sarah was gonna say !
I have so much fun watching yall have fun making the pod for us, its truly a joy

also to answer sarah's question about weapons and props and convention regulations, cons where i live allow airsoft guns but they must have orange tips (?) on them. foam weapons are allowed tho! some conventions also have a height regulation, my local comic con had a 2m height limit lol
