STEVE SUTCLIFFE: Is the latest Porsche 911 GT3 RS also the greatest? 992 GT3 RS v 993 Carrera RS
Steve Sutcliffe compares the latest RS-badged Porsche 911 to what he reckons is the greatest - the iconic 993-series 911 Carrera RS of 1995. The brand new 911 GT3 RS is the fastest and most extreme version yet, but how does it compare to its thrilling forebear?
Steve explains why active aero, huge power, multi-adjustable dampers and more are NOT enough to make the latest 911 RS as much fun to drive as the mid-1990s model.

Porsche royalty! Is the 911 R really worth TEN TIMES more than the Cayman R?

Porsche has only ever used the letter R as a model designation three times - just twice in the modern era. The Intercooler's Dan Prosser compares the 2011 987 Cayman R with the 2016 991-series 911 R to find out what that letter means in Porsche speak. The original 911 R of 1967 was the first 911 that Porsche built for racing. It remains one of the most sought-after 911s there is. So did Porsche...

Very often the profit margin on the car itself will be very small, but the profit on optional extras can be significant. I'm hoping it's still processing but it's disappointing to see this limited to CZcams's very low bitrate "720p." I'm not sure if this was a time crunch or a pipeline issue or what, but I would bet my left nut that this was shot in 4k. Steve's great and the visuals are beautiful even blurred to hell.

No, the 991.2 GT3 RS is probably the best all rounder. The 992 GT3 RS is a pointless technical exercise. The two best are the 997 GT3 RS 4L and the 991.2 GT3 RS. The truth is the oilers weren't very good. Basically the engine has been the same since the 991.2 GT3 with very minor changes - thus the engine in the 992 GT3 RS doesn't really add anything and the aero is irrelevant at road speeds. I personally thought the 992 GT3 RS was a waste of time and bought a 296 GTB instead and kept the 991.2 GT3 RS. I know its pub bore heresy land, but I don't like the oilers much - very over rated cars.

As even mid-price SUVs can crack 0-60 in 4 seconds or less, I seriously wonder when "enough" will be enough. The average muppet driver maybe ... shouldn't even be trusted with something that has 1000 bhp and will hit 200! And while we are all suckers for "more", as we watch market competitors like BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi launch new cars within 1 or 2 bhp of each other ... and we can get addicted to YT channels where Teslas drag race Ioniq 5s ... have we lost the plot? The human driving a GT3 RS across quiet roads early in the morning .... can't compute/ isn't interested in pure numbers, but only how the machine they're in FEELS. And make them feel. Great piece, Mr Steve. Thank you. I'd have the 993 any day.

I’m surprised no one has mentioned a comparison between the new 992 ST and the 993 RS, with the ST it’s back to the original ethos of the early RS cars, lightweight, strong engine with a precise gearbox and shifter. In my opinion Porsche nailed it with the ST, the drive is sublime yet the car is modern, between 7-9k the sound is just incredible and you notice the weight reduction in a similar way to a 993 C2 versus the RS.
