As a a Cornish person hearing Mic say ‘Goon gumpus’ is hilarious. But … he’s going to lose his mind when he learns it’s a place. I love you’ve picked up on his use of Cornish, well there are also track names from near Redruth and Camborne. Carn Marth is a hill, Logan Rock is in Penzance…St Michaels Mount is … a monastry on a island that is basically a small version of Mont St Michelle in France (and had a donation of money from the order of monks there to be built).. The front cover of Collapse is both a visual representation of Gwennap Pit … and an actual map of the area. Seeing he spent so much time here … it makes sense. I may be incorrect on the language but, his partner can speak another language, I believe I’ve heard it’s Polish. Some of the names will no doubt be words from this language mixed in. I mean he samples her voice on Syro … Oh and don’t forget him and other Cornish electronic wizard Luke Vibert were quite friendly … and Luke ended up on the same Rephlex label. It’s just a little nuts that, a place normally synonymous with tranquility has quite the site of birth of some pretty bonkers music 😬

this came at, dare i say the best time? i've been having so many doubts over my choice to go into the writing (litterature) program rather than the music one. thank you for this comprehensive look at it, helped me a lot :)

Collier's music is so dense because he hears things that way. I am a seasoned pro musician of many decades, jazz lover, jazz-fusion lover, lover of singer-songwriter/songcraft, and just about anything good from other genres, rock, soul, R&B, blues, clasiscal. As someone who loves dense harmonies and arrangement, even I find Colliers music a bit much for the ear. It sounds like he is trying so hard to squeeze everything possible into every moment of his compositions, and from a technical perspctive it's very impressive, but he is not respecting the aesthetic. It's also confusing because his genre is marketed in the same lane as "pop" music, so I think the listener's expectation is something easy to hear, pleasant, not too technical, ie. like pop music generally is presented. The kid is a genius, no doubt, he just needs to find his compositional voice, as I suspect he can play just about anything he wants. He seems to be really personable too, which is a nice quality for someone so gifted.

I can’t decide if I like Starboy or After Hours more. On one hand I wanted more collabs with Daft Punk I feel like they work so well together. I Feel It Coming being his best song and imo it should be his biggest song. But for me Pop The Weeknd is only The Weeknd I like. I respect the house of balloons sound but I don’t enjoy it at all. The more 80s he gets the better imo. Also omfg I Feel It Coming is life changing that’s his best vocals, best male vocals of the century, best production by Daft Punk ever. I Feel It Coming is the best 80s song of the century. Seriously Daft Punk come back just to produce for the weekend please.

Great vid. The EXPERIENCE of music is lost in today's streaming environment. And not just talking about the listening aspect -- but the experience of going to a record store, searching for a specific album or stumbling upon music that is an instant classic to you...Being in line at MIDNIGHT SALES for a new album release. Reading liner notes, absorbing the artwork....All of these aspects are what made me fall in love with music. So I'm looking forward to a heavy resurgence of CDs and other physical product again. Treat streaming for what it is....a convenience....but we can't replace it with the EXPERIENCE of music. No comparison.

I have a doctorate in composition. I'm in a ton of debt. I was told all along that I was such a good student, I should be able to get a full time teaching job really soon after I graduated. That never happened, teaching the adjunct life wore me out, and after being burned a few times by collaborators, I basically gave up on composing, the thing I really loved to do. Even now I struggle to find the energy to start back up with composing, just for me, just for fun. But you know what? I also wouldn't have made a different choice. Maybe different schools, maybe pick up a second major or a minor, but 9 years of music school made me who I am, and I'm proud of that. Also, they were a ton of fun at the time.

I attended a small audio engineering school in Manhattan called The Institute of Audio Research back in 1996 - the curriculum was cool, but the relationships and networks I developed during those 8 months were incomparable... that alone was worth the price of admission. ✅️

Two points I want to make: 1) Jacob is the most genuine musician out there. His music is a bit weird or all over the place because that's what he literally enjoys doing. He's not trying to please anyone but himself. Of course that won't resonate with most people. 2) He's the literal opposite of the fad-y mumble rap stars which seem to throw performance and any kind of technical musicianship out the window. People hate those guys because they're latching onto the hype of kids just liking them for being cool or weird, and not necessarily because their music is musical or good. At least in Jacob's case, he does know what he's talking about, and many people resonate with his own unique style.

its ok my personal favorite taylor album is midnights i honestly dont really like any of her other ones except 1989. my 1 gripe with the music and not even sure if its her fault really but its with streaming and specifically amazon unlimited and thats because that is all i use listen all i want is the regular album! there are some many versions and remixes and singles and comps its insane!

I spent 3 years doing music at college (in the UK), I've never once had to pull out the qualification for a job; but, upon leaving college I worked a shitty data input job until I joined a professional events band, and all the while I used what I'd learned to do a bit of gig promo-ing on the side, through which I met people who I formed a band with, wound up in a minorly succesful indie band; put out records, toured, through that did some higher visibility session work. Still played for a while in the events band and the singer owned a studio so did some work in there too. Now I work tech in theatres, long story short (too late); I've never once had to say or prove I went to music school in order to have a 20+ year career in music and music adjacent industries. But if I hadn't done it at college, I probably wouldn't have kicked my own ass to actually carve out a career in it so hard, so I fel like it was a worthwhile endeavor, it's way more than what's o the paper.

Shoutout to john deacon. One of my favourite bassists of all time. Plus I used to teach two of his grandsons at boarding school in Hampshire. Met him once, seemed like a great guy

I appreciate Jacob a lot, and I quite like some of his songs, but especially after recently seeing him concert I've realized that least currently, he's mostly not for me. Hope he keeps doing what he enjoys and hopefully I enjoy at least some of that moving forward!
