The diary of a boy and his synthesizer
Things I have in common with James Brown:
1. Super sweaty
2. Super bad
I've been busy tearing apart Dreamsequence and tearing apart my studio. It looks like a dump truck backed up and dropped a metric ton of cables and assorted music equipment in here.
Here's how this one played out:
1. Quick jam to make sure I got this send/return thing working. Cool.
2. Too tired to record. Going to take a nap.
3. Throw a boot at a cat slinking around my chickens.
4. Okay I'll just do one take then nap.
5. Sat down and nailed it on the first try. Yes!
6. Only recorded video goddamnit.
7. A dozen aborted takes later and... this is gonna have to do.
Patch notes:
I'm getting my mothballed "real" recording equipment set up. Patchbays, rack equipment, etc... to be less lazy about my recording process (which for the past few years has just been eurorack and/or Norns through OTO BAM into my audio interface.
So this time I have a send/return module so the reverb isn't just end-of-chain, but on the EX piano bit. The other synth is Just Friends through Tallin, Belgrad, and Mimeophon.
One cool thing I "discovered" is that apparently Crow can somehow control note durations on Just Friends when in sustain mode using the nb_jf voice. I don't really understand how that's possible and it's a little weird because I think it's just a gate that you can sort of fake an envelope on when using intone+time. Need to look into this more to understand how this works but it's pretty sweet.
Anyway, I was using JF's sustain mode then switched to cycle mode partway through. I've been playing a bit with cycle mode lately and feel like there are probably better ways to use it but it's kinda neat.
Oh, this is also a new-to-me oldschool Intellijel case so I can fit EX in there. Ridiculous to buy a case for a specific module but I don't believe in spacers. Intellijel should make a 4u performance case.

Two things I'm playing with: 1. Poly Seq mode. I like the simplicity of a mono seq but this open up some options and has some applications for mono, too. 2. I changed the pattern rotate function to operate on the whole 16-step pattern rather than just the looped portion. I had an event set up to rotate it in 4-step chunks so I could keep updating the pattern as I went. I'm realizing now that, h...

Most of my videos in the last year have been pretty heavily-focused on trying out Dreamsequence features with the eurorack being sort of ancillary. Monome looks slick.. Always been intrigued by teletype and norns too.. what would you say the difficulty level it to learn
I think that both Teletype and Norns are probably the best way to get into musical coding stuff. Some great tutorials ("studies") and the community will help you along the way. I came in with no coding experience to speak of and have been able to create some tools that I'm really proud of. The experience is pretty different between the two, thought. Teletype is extremely quick to get into and will have you making interesting things right away. It can easily replace a dozen modules in my case and is great for trying out new ideas. Where Teletype becomes frustrating is when you have a more complex script idea (especially when Grid is involved) and fitting everything into one script becomes like the world's most complex game of Tetris. If you're good at keeping the scope of your projects reasonable-- or just like the challenge of doing impossible stuff, Teletype is hard to beat. Norns, on the other hand, is a total sandbox where you can do whatever you want, including audio. You're really limited by your own ability whereas on Teletype you're limited by your ability + the system constraints. The language Norns uses, Lua, seems really natural compared to the extremely-concise and often confusing stuff that you'll make in Teletype. I dread ever having to go back to revisit my old Teletype code which looks like insane nonsense to me now, but I've taken months-long breaks from my Norns code and had no trouble picking it back up. So I guess I'd summarize this way: if you want to make more complex music tools, do audio/DSP, or build interfaces for Grid, I'd go with Norns. If love modular and are interested in exploring musical coding in a really direct way, Teletype is awesome. Worth mentioning that Teletype is available for free in VCV Rack, with support for a virtual or real Grid. Virtual TT also makes it easier to develop vs the module (which can only connect to a Grid or keyboard at once-- not both!). I'd suggest giving that a try and working through the Teletype studies. You'll know pretty quickly if it works for you.
Thank you very much for your insight into this 🙏🙌 I will eventually try my hand at musical coding.. maybe in vcv rack like you mentioned just to get a taste and see if I like it. Beautiful composition by the way. Cheers!
Nice video, nice sound, nice setup and I enjoyed the text in the description... I can feel it. this is beautiful ! do you have this available on a plateforme for download? (bandamp or whatever?) thanks !
I don't 😕. But thank you for asking-- that's very flattering. Something I'll have to look into if I ever feel confident enough!
James Brown has been my favorite artist since I was 12 years old in 1968, and I have no idea what you’re talking about here there’s nothing that I see here that has anything in common with Mr. Brown.
What about my sweaty armpits? Meet me halfway here.
@@ModularBeatare you higher than a giraffe’s ass?
I count at least... _three?_ body parts (not counting digits, of course) that Mr. Brown has been confirmed to also have for the better part of most of his life. Your move, smart guy.
It’s a stupid post.
What modules are in action here? Sounds very lovely! I will not buy an Intellijel case.. I don't like that modules are being made ONLY to fit their expensive cases :/
TY! Disting EX, Just Friends, Tallin, Belgrad, Mimeophon. Not sure if you take issue with 1U modules or perhaps the modules that integrate with their case's MIDI/audio jacks? I'm not wild about 1U because there aren't many modules that take special advantage of the more horizontal form factor, but it's a good way to squeeze in a few more modules when you don't have space for 2 rows of full-size modules. AFAIK there's nothing stopping other brands from adopting the same features (and some have) so I don't see this as being anticompetitive. More... expanding options. Great thing about modular synths is that we really are spoiled for choice!
What are you talking about? Their cases fit a very specific need among Modular users.
Awesome! Well done! Not sure if I could see James Brown doing anything with Modular, but if he did, he would be a SEX MACHINE, MAN! Keep up the great work!
Anything is possible with enough cocaine!
104hp?
Yes. Apparently they came in other sizes but this seems good for my desk. It's super heavy!
seeing your video's through completely different eyes, now that you've shown the rest of your studio on the lines forum... haha ! <3
LOL sorry to ruin the magic. I had just pulled everything out after shampooing the carpet and was in the middle of wiring stuff up. Not normally that wild.
Very nice. Having that big grid must be awesome for drums. Does it work well on a 16x8 grid too?
Yeah the big boy is real nice for drums so you can do 16th notes and have immediate access to a whole measure. Drums are still pretty new to me with the WIP script and I haven't really got a good feel for 'em yet. Currently I have it set up so you can scroll up and down to get a full 16 steps out of the 16x8 grid but it's easy to get lost. I mostly use 16x8 and design for that first, though, so I'll keep playing with it and might be able to get it working better.
oc as quantizer?
Pretty sure you’re right
in this video, teletype is just used for sequencing? any eg or lfo? because sound very beautiful 😮
Yup, just sequencing JF. Unfortunately you can't control JF's envelope/duration using i2c/Teletype/Crow.
what is the JF used for?
"The string-like sound is Just Friends to Tallin to Belgrad to Elements. I then created a secondary shimmer-like effect by multing that to Cornflakes to Mimeophon to FX Aid. It was sequenced by Marbles run through Dreamsequence's CV harmonizer."
this rack is only a filter?or2?
No, it's doing everything. Teletype+Grid is sequencing Disting EX and I think there is some Mimeophon or Cornflakes.
could i use Monome 128 grid with Crow and without Norns and teletype? And what will be different?
i mean grid + crow only,is that work?
@@raneflewit6250 Nope. Crow is not a USB host so this will not work. There's a good comparison of Crow vs. Teletype here: monome.org/docs/crow/faq/

@@ModularBeat Thanks, however I have usb mini-b grid connector.
Thanks very much for this incredible Script, I am exploring it. Meanwhile that computer keyboard how it’s being as midi input with Norns ? Also can you please name the computer keyboard please ? , thanks
The keyboard is OLKB Planck. Ableton live has an option to play MIDI using a computer keyboard, which you can send to Norns using a Denki Oto 2host. Keyboards like this can also be programmed with QMK to output MIDI directly but I have not tried it, personally.
Thanks for the info. With respect to the script can I route the midi from chord to one midi device (let’s say midi device 1 connected to Norns ) and sequence to another midi device (Device 2) , I tried changing the voice midi destination but it only show the first midi device 1.1 for both chord and sequence. Please advise. Thanks

Do you have to have crow to use Norns with your modular or can you use any midi to CV interface?
Any MIDI to CV interface should work. Crow can do some handy things like give scripts direct control over envelope shapes or output specific voltages/triggers/gates, etc... but it's not necessary for making notes.
@@ModularBeat oh ok. Very good to know thank you for the information. I was always curious what crow really even did and what the major features it offered rather than just being a midi connection to modular.
