Phil, you are indeed an inspiration, especially in being able to lift more than your body weight. A friend of mine says it's impossible to build muscle after a certain age, and you are proof that he's talking nonsense. Well done on your strength gains. 😃
LOL, my face went purple during the first 5 seconds of this video. Great way to start. Your explanation is, of course, spot on. No exercise builds strength unless it's done heavy enough, and taken close enough to failure.
Thank you! Glad you appreciated the video.🙂

Volume is very low or up and down when he moves.🤨
Sorry I’m not sure what you mean. Can you elaborate a bit more.
If your playing tennis 3 times a week and then do weights to strengthen your legs wouldnt that class as overtraining?
Good question. If you train your legs to fatigue you’ll then need a recovery day the day after. This just means that you shouldn’t train the same muscles to fatigue again in the gym. You are fine to do other activities that involve the legs such as tennis, running, swimming, cycling, etc. So doing both tennis and gym multiple times in a week wouldn’t be classed as over training.
If your playing tennis 3 times a week & doing weights on the days in between to strengthen them wouldn't that class as overtraining ?

regarding DOMS don't you need to grow muscle by letting it recover rather than train it every day? otherwise it will overtrain it?
Hi Chris. Yes your are correct that you don’t want to train the muscle group to fatigue again the next day. However you can still do a light workout where you use the same muscle group, which will often help ease the DOMS. What I didn’t make clear in this video was that she was asking if she should do her next workout which was 3 days after her initial workout (the one that caused the DOMS) where she would be doing different exercise to the first workout.

Hi Chris how many sets is best for over 60 man doing strength training thank mick
Hi Mick. I generally recommend 3 sets of each exercise within a session. But if you’re motivated and have the time then up to 5 sets would be ok. The key is working close to muscle fatigue for each set and then having sufficient rest in between sets (at least 2mins). Please let me know if you have any other questions. Chris

Hi Mick. I covered your question in this weeks Q&A session which you can find here - czcams.com/users/livej9fPaWj-Ev0?si=0QJ-bJZv2hOiEtK6
Hi Chris, I’ve recently started lifting weights rather than mainly cardio based gym classes, and I’m really enjoying it. Sadly a long-standing, stable and controlled umbilical hernia decided to turn rogue resulting in emergency surgery to repair it. Consequently squats are now totally out. I don’t want to sit around doing nothing, I’m thinking of continuing with overhead presses, bench presses, maybe barbell rows and extension leg exercises. Anything abdominal is out for a while until the wound has healed, but what can I do and to what level. I obviously don’t want to push the exercises to the detriment of my recovery, so I’m taking it slowly at the moment, but do want to get back to a full exercise routine. Any advice on how much, what and at what intensity I should exercise would be appreciated. Thank you.
Hi Dave. Thanks for your question. Sorry to hear about your hernia and that you needed to have emergency surgery. I'll answer the question on next weeks live call at 12pm on Wed 27th Dec. I'll send a link to the recording here once its done. But basically it might be that you focus more on isolation exercises, where you just focus on one muscle group at a time as opposed to compound lifts/functional movement patterns where you work multiple muscle groups at the same time. Example of isolated exercises are bicep curls, lateral raises, knee extension, hamstring curls. Overhead press should be OK, I would probably do it seated rather than standing. I would probably choose a seated row with a cable machine or resistance band over doing a bent over row. In terms of intensity I would keep the weights light and not aim for any personal bests. You are simply keeping a routine at this stage and trying to maintain some strength. If you try to lift too heavy you are likely to brace and engage your abdominals, even with isolated exercises. This could increase your intra abdominal pressure too much and cause a reaction, or in the worst case scenario cause the need for further surgery. Having said all this, it is difficult without knowing your individual circumstances. I would recommend running your intended program past your surgeon to ensure they are happy for you to start. Chris
