    Cowan doesn’t talk about holding off. He sets the shoulder and releases depending on the shot you want to make.

      Ok, then I’m confused. Can ‘hold the pressure on’ and release co-exist?

    • @GolfCoachDrNoel
      @GolfCoachDrNoel Před dnem

      As for ‘setting the shoulders’ presumably that’s about where the arms are in relation to the shoulders? This all new golf swing terminology for me. Loading the shoulders in other sports is about where the shoulders sit on the frame; up- down, forward- back. The optimal depending on the direction of force.

    i've suffered from the chipping yips for 20 years and had lessons from 1 week with Pelz to everything in between including switching to left handed (i play right but am naturally left handed so thought that must be it :) Out of desire to join an annual tour with a group of friends, i tried to get back to it a year ago. I ran into Charles Kallassy who had worked with many greats at my local course practice area. He saw me struggling and not only had the patience and dedication but the insight to see where my technique and pain points failed me -all gratis out of true dedication to the sport. My journey started again with a renewed interest in the game and got me to the point where i could practice and have faith in the technique. Unfortunately the pain continued on the course. I found your video after digging up old books, videos and on and on. If ever you have seen a video where a person hears sound for the first time, I felt like that person - after 20 years someone who recognized what it was and what it was not, someone who understood the yips and the challenge that a yipper felt. Technique is one thing as you say, but not enough for the afflicted. Fast forward to the drills and thought processes - what a revelation. Like an addiction, I will always likely be affected in some way but now, i feel like i have recognition, understanding and tools in my toolbox which are yielding positive results. Thank you, thank you thank you for all your information and best of luck with the continued research. To the rest of you out there, listen to what is being said - it will restore your confidence and love of the game we all enjoy.

    Foley years ago said to stay "centered" over the ball which i know as a decent golfer was incorrect and would put too much pressure on your back. When he took over as Tigers coach I predicted Tiger would have back issues which is EXACTLY what happened. I dont think FOley knows the swing like people think. @@GolfCoachDrNoel Nothing new here really. Having struggled with the principles of the short game for 40 years, I've tried to reduce my approach to the most simple, repeatable thoughts and actions as possible. Of course, Describing a "feeling" is difficult. So here are some thoughts: (Understanding the differences of CHIP mechanics and ball positioning is upon the golfer) My idea is to setup to your intended target line so that you can "Throw the hands" (and the clubhead) along your intended target line. Using gravity, the "Throw" will establish the natural path and plane of the club. (Dr. Kwan Golf). In these regards, the measure of the "Throw" should be commensurate with the distance and strike needed for the shot. Need a Tiny shot? Envision a tiny throw. I think in terms of the clock face principle. Starting from the 6 o'clock (ball and clubhead down), a "7" is a tiny swing. A chip can encompass up to an 8 or 9 as needed, with anything more than that no longer being a chip. - The Setup to the shot is as NATURAL as possible. Avoiding any form of tension, twisting, or torque in the shoulders, down through the arms into the hands. An improper setup will cause you to twist and contort the shoulders, arms and hands. This will breakdown the swing before you start. - "Hold" the club as gently as possible! Do Not Grasp or squeeze. Grasping or squeezing the handle will create tension and begin the aforementioned breakdown of the swing. At this point, the club is merely laying in the hands. It is simply being supported in the fingers and has not been twisted or manipulated off the intended target line. - Lastly, find and use a personal "Trigger Motion" to set the swing in motion. This will start "The Flow" (as you named it). The smaller the needed swing, the smaller and more delicate the trigger. It is during this final trigger moment that the hands will finally grasp the handle "just enough" to start the clubhead on its tiny little journey and then lead it back to the ball. We do not HIT the ball. We swing the clubhead and lead it back to the ball. Given these basic principles, the clubhead (and gravity) will establish its proper path and the natural CHIP swing will perform all the work. Anecdotally, these 3 simple thoughts are quite applicable all the way up and down the golf bag from driver to putter. Of course, the force and magnitude of the intended "Throw" will be dictated by the given circumstance and needed shot. Absolutely NONE of these principles are New, nor are they mine. They have been around since the beginning of the game itself and have been merely forgotten and often overlooked. SIMPLER is always BETTER. Cheers.

    Well, there is no active wrist hinge in the backswing; and we can never swing the club up. The only "extension" in the backswing is extensor extension. And, the only thing the left wrist joint does is push back. When the extensors have fully extended the wrist joint keeps pushing back; and, this effects a slight cupping of the wrist

    • @GolfCoachDrNoel
      @GolfCoachDrNoel Před 26 dny

      Hi @DASH1ful Can I try and understand what you are saying here a little bit more clearly; When you say ‘there is no active wrist hinge and you we can never swing the club up’ this is obviously different to most golfers experience so would you mind elaborating please? )Might help my backswing actually) In terms of the next point about extensor extension, are you describing your ‘ideal’ pattern or all swings? Am in right in saying that when we radially deviate (I hate the use of such exclusive language but here we are ) we get some extension/cupping of the left wrist? Is this what you mean when you say ‘extensor extension’? And is that different to what I described in the video?

    • @GolfCoachDrNoel
      @GolfCoachDrNoel Před 26 dny

      I would also add that if there is one thing I have learnt over the years it is to hold my beliefs ‘loosely’ because you may not feel the same in time. Sorry, it was starting with ‘well’ that makes me feel like you have it all figured out. I prefer a softer more collaborative approach.

    • @DASH1ful
      @DASH1ful Před 26 dny

      @@GolfCoachDrNoel The takeaway is two dimensional. The left wrist joint pushes back as the extensors in the left hand extend. The extensors extend in the waggle, as a player waggles the club back. The extensors have to extend to waggle the club back; and accommodate the downwards rotation of the left hand. The index finger side of the left hand presses against the right hand to return the club to the ball. This activates the flexor retinaculum in the left hand. The extensor digiti minimi and the digiti minimi resist against the flexor retinaculum as the club is returned to the ball. They have to, to stop the club from flipping. As the club is returned to the ball the extensors and the flexor retinaculum are fully activated. There is no big discovery in what I say. I am just simply looking at the physiology of the waggle. But, by looking at the physiology of the waggle it helps us to learn the importance of the waggle. However, there is one important thing that I have overlooked. If the hands are too low at address the extensors can't extend. To ensure that a players hands are high enough it helps if they grip the club lightly, when they first take their grip; and then raises their position by pressing back with the base of their neck. The weight of the clubhead will then press the handle of the club up against the heel pad of their hand and arch their wrist slightly. This, also, presses the left hand forwards and extends the extensors.

    thanks Dr for doing this on the HM device.i have one also and still trying to correlate what device signals to me to what my shot pattern/trajectory results are. so many ways to create short game shots, and not only the wrists but body torso turn is important, if I dont turn my body with shots usually get more lead wrist extension, almost a scooping ,but much less extension with body turn. seems like the HM graphs give more info than the pictures, and I think the goal is to decrease as much as possible the impact sudden loss of flexion with less of a sharp valley in the graph x axis, if I am understanding correctly?. Thank you for your video; I now understand where my problem lies. I've been merging concepts from two different people. When I have a slight fade, I think about releasing the clubhead, and when I feel unstable, I think about maintaining the wrist angle. However, because my forearms are not fully extended (as Pete mentioned), I end up topping the ball when I don't release properly. Then, I try to shift more weight to my left foot, hoping to hit the turf behind the ball... In short, it's a mess. But now things are a bit clearer. Thank you very much.

    @Dr Noel, I watched the entire video but didn't see anything that would specifically suggest pain for the upper back and shoulders? I went to the range to hit about 20 balls to test a driver. Granted, I hadn't swung a club in 6 months and now my upper back is beyond strained as are my shoulders and lower cervical spine. Is this likely just a factor of not having swung a club for many months or a technique issue? If the latter, it would be great to know what incorrect swing is usually the culprit for upper back pain. Thanks!

    thanks for your review.i dont have the bookl,but watch the videos. I am still confused about the separation of the 3 releases.is it more your stance from the ball, the release timing, the follow thru, combo of several things. from what I see it is a lot about the length of the backswing from the address,release 1 like you say more like a putt, release 2 a longer swing, release 3 still longer all based on the situation .if you could explain a little more.thanks John

    • @GolfCoachDrNoel
      @GolfCoachDrNoel Před měsícem

      I would say that the defining factor is how much you let the club head pass the handle through impact. As you say though, with more release there is a progression of wider stance, lower hands, more distance from the ball and with more loft at impact there is always more swing. Having just written this reply I see your point, even though Dan has done a terrible job in putting all this into a framework, there is still a lot to it.

Getting on my left side is much easier. I absolutely love it and before I play I watch a few minutes of the video on my phone. I think there is a negative to this method. I dont like either one lol. I been looking at mimicking and using the methods of Jack Nicholas, Ben Hogan, Lee Trevino, Young Tiger Woods and Bobby Jones. Turning in the back swing with the shoulders: relaxed arms and Hands. But, controlling the wrists in the swing, using speed through the back swing to set up the club and allowing the weight of the club to set itself in the back swing. Then using the throw method by using both the lateral weight shift and using the chest to speed up the club. Which in-turn makes the relaxed arms to follow behind. which creates lag in the swing and following the weight shift with your chest and coming through the ball with the motion and making sweet contact. I prefer that natural swing method and having less swing thoughts and being less technical or biomechanical about the swing. Rotary Swing method is about learning from the greats of the past. all of today's teaching methods are all set-up to help recreate what the old greats did. Because they found the true golf swing in the upbringing of the sport.

      Those are certainly sound fundamentals that are going to help most golfers. Sounds like you really like Chuck’s whole approach.

    This reminds me of the way I was taught to do a punch shot.

      There is definitely that element to the follow through. The ‘keeping the pressure on’ would have that feel.

    how does this apply to driver? there is no release and a lot of shaft lean....

      @GolfCoachDrNoel Před měsícem

      Well. This is it. There must be a a lining up of the shaft and no release with the driver is awful.

      @@GolfCoachDrNoel maybe you need to incorporate a throw release after impact?

      @@McLovin-go2rm it certainly needs to unwind and more so with high hcp players

    It’s most similar to a slapshot in ice hockey. I think it stabilises the face, stops rotation and lets the club release

      Ahh! Didn’t think of hockey. It’s not a sport we watch much in U.K.

    I've watched a lot of CZcams video instructors, and you are the absolute best communicator. For you to be able to take the differences and similarities of Cowen and Foley, and make it understandable to a layman is more than commendable. Seriously. You have a knack for understanding the golf swing and relating it in an easy to follow way. I'm a satisfied customer... Thanks!

    I am always told to get my weight on the target side and this seems to be his brilliant but maybe unorthodox way to get it done.cant argue with success!.
