I am a Geologist and Science Educator. I spend most of my free time Rockhounding and Hiking, and I love to teach others about Mineral Collecting, Geology, Science, and anything else I find interesting!
That said, my biggest passion is ROCKHOUNDING! I have been a rockhound for roughly 15 years now, and I just cannot get enough of it! I have been so many places, seen so many cool things, and I wish I had spent more of that time filming the experience so I could share it with others. That changes now! I will now film every rock, mineral, and crystal hunt that I can! I love finding cool things that occur out in nature! THERE IS TREASURE EVERYWHERE! We just need to go out and look for it...and have some knowledge of what to look for.
I have a Bachelors degree in Geology and a Masters degree in Science Education.

I like the patterned Wonder Stone
That Black agate reminds me of the black opals we have.
They're all beautiful.
I love the beautiful abstract bands in wonderstone❤
Looks great. thanks
That salina wonderstone is impressive
Wonderstone Tiki face 😉
I could really see the water disappearing into the rock. Good vid!
Those are sweet.
Nice cuts. Really love the wonderstone.
Me too
Agates are always nice! Wonderstone has cool patterns but never polishes up. Too porous! Dull rock in my opinion.
That place is bonkers! Awesome pieces!
Beautiful!
What do you do with these thick pieces?
Nothing right now, but that is a good point. Probably shouldn't cut too many this thick. Maybe just polish and display it? being thicker they might display better.
Awsomo colors
Thanks!
Very Nice ! I am jealous!!
Thanks!
Hey fellow rockhounder! I noticed that you have a plethora of videos in Utah.. I’m on my way there to film a few rock hunting videos and was wondering if you had any suggestions on location! You seem like THE expert. I tried to find you on IG to reach out directly but didn’t come up with anything - let me know if you have an email or something similar I can use to contact you! Cheers
You can email me at theruggedrockhound@gmail.com
Best wishes for your future recovery
Thank you!
What is that called_______ Wonder Stone?
Salina wonderstone and Vernon wonderstone I believe he said
@@notflanders4967 thanks
Yep, Salina wonderstone for the black and tan stuff, Vernon for the pink stuff.
I like your videos but please don’t tell your spots. It’s not becoming. These treasures will be cleaned out fast by the wrong people and you’ll live to see what I’m talking about. Please keep your spots within your circle so that future generations will be able to enjoy what your enjoying.
I understand your feelings about this, and when making this channel I thought long and hard about whether or not to let people know where I was going. I decided to give the locations because I believe that most people are good people, and even though there will be some bad people who will abuse this information, I still think that letting the good people know where to go is still worth it for them to enjoy. Also, most of the locations I go to are already known locations to rockhounds. This being said, I don't give the coordinates to every location, some places have too little material or too precious material that I decide to keep the location a secret. I know that some people disagree with what I am doing, but I feel that most of these places should be shared for others to enjoy, not just myself and my family/friends.
You must me new. Do your kids a favor and keep your spots in a tight circle or one day there won’t be a single spot left to take them. There’s a reason why your able to do what your doing. Keep your spots to your friends and family!
Actually I have been rockhounding for 20 years now. Many rockhounding locations that have been well known and published in books for decades still have plenty of material left. It is true that some places have been heavily overrun over the years, but even those locations still have material (at least where I have been). I believe that this world is meant to be enjoyed by everyone. While it is true some people will make bad choices, most people are good people and I want to help be of service to them.
That snake you saw is a rubber boa, a very cool thing to see! im jelly!
Thanks for the info!
I occasionally dig them up in my yard up in Lewiston. Of course by the time I get them they are well rounded. My largest so far is the size of a cantaloupe.
They are probably coming from the mountains north of there. cool!
Trent Thank you for your knowledge and ability to teach us about rocks and more. Thank you!!!
My pleasure!
We have this set up but we use a harbor freight grinder and flip it put it on blocks strapped down in a half blue barrel with a drip system. Yes we have the motor part covered and outside the barrel. This way we can hold on to the rock and get round edges to if we want. This way you can do inside during the winter. Longer on the course grits, practice makes perfect. You did great!
Thanks for the info! I may need to make something like it in the future.
I like how u cut open random rocks. I often wonder what alot of different ones look like on the inside. I also like how u get straight to the point. Thanks so much! 😊
Thanks!
I will keep you in my prayers!
Thank you!
Amazing finds! Looks like I need to take a trip to Idaho. The agates you found reminded me of the ones you found at Hop Creek.
Thanks!
Is that Limestone? I went Barite hunting today but didn't find anything unfortunately. I mean other than fossils 😆
Most of the rock is mudstone in this area.
@theruggedrockhound perfect that is what I see out here in NE Colroado so I wanted to make sure I was in the right area! Thank you brother!
Sending prayers 🙏🏼
Thank you!
Praying for you.
Thank you!
Congrats on the new saw. And the rocks were all beautiful. I'm so sorry to hear about your medical issues! And I'm sure we will All understand. Your health is most important, because without that, there is no channel! Please take care of yourself! ❤ We will still be here. And .y fingers are crossed, that it's something stupid, and easily fixable! Even if that means another surgery! I will be praying for you. 🙏🙏🙏 And my fingers will be crossed for you!🤞🤞🤞🙏🙏🙏🤞🤞🤞🙏🙏🙏🤞🤞🤞. Best of luck to you T❣️ You will always have my support❣️🤞🙏❣️🤞🙏
Thank you so much! I too am hopefully that it can be resolved soon.
🙏 Praying for you!
Thank you!
I have a very similar but larger version of that type of saw. I just cut agate and I've never had a problem with thin pieces breaking. I don't even understand why the Gap would matter. But I've never tried something softer like wonderstone.
Thin pieces do fall down into the gap which is annoying.
That could be the problem. I will need to try with some agate next time.
Great looking rocks. thank you!
You're welcome!
Yay! I’m working from home and I have a cool video to watch!! Thank youuuuuu! ❤😂🙌🏼
You're welcome!
We drove up there just a few weeks ago from Spanish Fork, but were west of Boise, closer to the Owyhee mountains. It's so crazy the difference in the agate you found vs what we found! My boy and I were expecting water-level banding like Idaho is famous for, yet all of the material we collected was very much a plume pattern agate with great variety in color. And quite a bit of petrified wood that was colorful and agatized as well. Crazy how the geology can change just a few valleys over! Great video, thanks!
I do need to get over there some time and get some of that plume agate. I just love how much variety is out there!
@@theruggedrockhound yeah, you picked a good place to live. We’ll miss having you in Utah, but Idaho is pretty excellent! Can’t wait for more adventures 👍🏻 thanks.
Enjoyed, Hoping all keeps going well for you, Thank you for sharing
Thanks!
The one at 16:25 looks like a polar bear in the artic. Very kool
It does!
I think you're confusing terms of agate and chalcedony, what you're finding here is a variety of chalcedony, not agate. Agate has to have some sort of self organized structure or fortification to be classified as agate. Banding, dendritic, eyes, sagenite, tubes, all respresent structure in agate, without self organized structure you have chalcedony.
Yes, it is technically chalcedony. the material here has been mis-labeled as agate for many years. Thanks for the clarification!
Oooh Idaho has some good rocks, you'll have lots to check out!
Thanks! Looking forward to it!
So all Celestite isn’t blue? How do you identify it? I have some that I didn’t find, and I know the crystal shape is different from quartz, but how else do you tell? Great video. Idaho will be awesome, too!
Good question. The high density is one of the easiest ways to identify, but when it is to small to feel that weight difference then you do have to look at the crystal structure. Identifying a mineral by the crystal structure takes time to learn and sometimes even that isn't enough. Fortunately, people have been here before me and already identified most of the minerals.
I really love the way you splice in video of the agates cut while we watch you collect them. Great video!
Thanks!
One of the rocks you looked at(16:27), when it was cut, looked like a scene with a polar bear. My favorite one!
Thanks!
Very good to see you healthy and happy! Now we get to see what rocks are in Idaho. Georgeous green...and the agates! amazing! God bless you.
Thank you!
It looks like Idaho is going to be good to you! That's awesome! Man that place was just covered in agate! You walked by, and picked up next to, some big agates! I'm screaming at the TV! Lol! But you found some really beautiful agates, and everywhere you looked, there was so many more! It was incredible! Woohoo!🎉 Welcome to Idaho! This is going to be exciting! Congrats on the move too! ❤ Thanks!
Thank you! Happy to be doing better and happy to be in Idaho. Who knows what adventures await?
Welcome to Idaho! Thought you would be too busy unpacking? Lol...Beautiful chalcedony, Agates, & Jasper finds! Love the crystals as well! Jackpot!... I'm going to have to hit the area next time I'm in Idaho.
I was, but now that the unpacking is mostly done it is back to rockhounding!
I think you did great for the first round! You learn as you go! Different people who tallk about polishing are great to watch. Wish I could list them but for some reason CZcams doesn't like that. One made the comment about after a certain grade of grit to not go further until the scratches are gone. I will have to go back and look for that one! I think that polisher is great! It is not as expensive as the lapidary ones but will also come in handy for large polishing jobs in the future too. Starting out with that makes more sense than diving into a more expensive piece of equipment!
Thanks! I will have to check out some of these videos.
You could hear it in your voice how exciting your rock hounding day was! Looking forward to following your journey at exploring New places!!!
Thank you! It also just feels great to be able to rockhound like this again.
These were amazing finds! Loved the banding and the colors of blue and green! What an eventful day! (already had this area earmarked on my trip list hehehe)
Yes indeed! Thanks!
