Smog Tailpipe Emissions Test Preparation
Every two years, I prepare my 1999 and older automobiles for the California emissions test. This is basic preparation for states that perform tail pipe emissions test for vehicles with no other issues. I demonstrate what I do on my 1989 Honda Civic.
The four basic steps before the smog test are:
• Oil and filter change,
• Clean the air filter,
• Change the oxygen sensor, and
• Drive for a week with Royal Purple MaxClean or 505 CRF fuel system cleaner.

    I'm going to try to get the OEM stopper/plug into the hole but I may revert to this method if I get frustrated. Replacing that thing is a PITA. Seeing as the Vehicle Inspector dinged me for mine being bypassed at the plug, I have to fix it. This is one of those jobs where you need "the strength and know-hoe of a man and the hands of a little girl"! JIC my "tape the plug on the tip of a screwdriver and press"- does not work, I'm using some scrap hose! Thanks Brad

      Follow up: I got it done. I removed the switch "blind" lying on my back, crammed into the drivers floorboard/pedal box doing most everything by feel. I would not repeat that ever again. I will do it the way I'm listing it below if there ever is a next time. (I Might even remove the battery cable next time, but I doubt it. 12VDC isn't much juice IMO/IME but the Safety Guys so YOU should do that before working on a car so follow there advice) My path was to; 1) remove the lower cover below the steering wheel and 2) the metal safety / crash guard below the steering wheel. 3) I then removed the two 10mm nuts holding the Fuse box and lowered it done a bit to get clear line0f sight to the upper switch (switch B which is the Clutch Safety Interlock. this made it easy to see straight thru the threaded bore that holds the switch and the hole on the pedal assy. where the grommet/pad is retained. I then 4) Pushed the Clutch to the floor and held it in place with a long screwdriver and a block of wood that was braced against the upper steering column, this allowed me to see thru the switch hole to the pad hole. 5) I used a small dowel and some masking tape to fashion u a "fishing line" if you will, to then guide the Pad/grommet up over the top of the boxed in clutch bracket assy. . It was pretty easy to then guide the pointed end into the hole and I stacked up a bunch of 1/4" ratchet extensions which allowed me to then push that centered up pad into its hole/retaining bore on the pedal assy. Hearing it give a little click as it pressed in was music to my ears! I pulled out my little fishing pole (so what there is some dangling masking tape!) 6) Install of the Switch. I used a chunk of old hose, about 9-12" or so, to hold the switch as an extension. It made the install of the switch a piece of cake. So much easier than trying to do the task "Blind", on your back, crammed into the pedal area of a Civic) Try to remember how far the jamb-nut was when you removed it (mine was about halfway down the threads) 7) connect up the connector and do a quick start test to make sure you SW is properly set BEFORE you close up / start putting the removals back in place. (IF You followed the Safety Guys and disconnected the battery before you started working on the car, you'll need to connect it again to do the Functional Checks) Make sure both of the clutch interlock switches are hooked up...BOTH are required to start the car. NOTE: The Clutch Safety (Upper) interlock should be set so that the clutch is pretty much "to the floor" to pass some state inspections. IF the starter does not kick in and your car does not start, turn it in clockwise until it does. and then Lock down the jamb nut (17MM) 8) Double check the start again after tightening the jamb nut...sometimes doing that can affect the distance of plunge on that switch plunger! (You've done enough swearing, (be that "virtual" or out loud) I did anyway, I'm a big guy and laying on my back in the floorboards of a CIVIC plays hell with my back!) , so better to double/triple check before you close up. Better to do a double check than to have regrets...right? 8) Re-assemble the things you pulled down to gain access to that damned Switch and grommet. Check whatever you disconcerted by removing the lower panel assy (Fogs, Dimmer sw or whatever) 9) Check the functions of what was disconnected. Everything works? IF So.....Take a chill with a frosty beverage...Youve earned it!!! "Boog"

      Yes, I got the new axle that has the ABS cog rig that you see on the outer joint. The ABS ring did not contact the knuckle. The fitment issue was due to the shape of outside joint near the spindle. As you see in the video, that fitment issue was resolved when I removed ring on the knuckle.

    I've been given a quote of $1,500 to add 9 steel fence posts and replace a few fence boards. That is excessive, so I think I will have to fix my fence since most companies are charging that minimum fee to do the work. What tools will I need to drill that hole (I live in TX with clay soil). That is my biggest concern is getting that 2 foot hole dug and then setting the post correctly. And then what tools will I need to attach the posts to the fence. Thanks

    • @DoItYourselfDIYAtHome
      @DoItYourselfDIYAtHome Před 2 lety

      You need the following tools: 1. Post hole digger (long handle tool in the garden department), 2. Electric screw driver to attach the metal brackets to the wood, 3. Adjustable wrench to tighten the brackets onto the round metal posts. If you have hard or rocks in the soil, then you will need a heavy metal digging bar. You may final all of these at a hardware store.

    Quick question, do you just wedge it in between the metal bracket and the button or do you slide the hose rubber onto the metal bracket ? I wedged the rubber hose in between and it works but it was also now start without even engaged the clutch, was just curious which one you did ?

    Does the fruit not need the sunlight to help it ripen? I'm new at growing peaches. My first tree has tiny fruit on it right now and I'm looking for ways to protect it from birds or squirrels. I covered them in the recent cold snap with warm socks to protect them, but I hadn't thought to cover them like that to protect from "predators".

    • @DoItYourselfDIYAtHome
      @DoItYourselfDIYAtHome Před 3 lety

      Perhaps there is some effect of sunlight on the fruit ripening. But I cannot distinguish any difference of flavor or sweetness of cover versus non-covered fruit. I also cover the fruit on my fig tree.

    For those who have tried this and for some reason can get it to work, Just unplug the pigtail that connects directly to that clutch pedal start switch ( may be called clutch switch assembly. for example. mine for my 05 civic si is part 36760-SE0-003 found here www.hondapartsnow.com/parts-list/2005-honda-civic--3dr_si-ka_5mt/chassis/pedal.html?PNC=7 ) and instead use a paper clip to bypass it. Meaning plug the paper clip ( one end into the left part of the pigtail and one end into the right part of that same pigtail). I guaranteed you if you do this right, you can now crank your civic regardless of whether or not you press in the clutch pedal. *** warning though **. ensure your in neutral before attempting to crank using this method or your car will jump/stall on you upon cranking. I don't know why the dumbasses at Honda designed the arms of these clutch pedals not to make direct contact with pushing the black spring loaded pin ends of these clutch switches ( both the starting switch as as well the cruise control one on my car) and should have instead just at least drilled a hole, simply tapped it, and used a big enough metal bolt/screw with a big enough wrench-fitting head on it in which to make the contact pushing in the pin to do it's job. These plastic or rubber little pieces are difficult to pin point when searching for them as replacement parts.

    Story time. I drove from PA to my friends place in Florida. My 91 civic ran like a champ entire trip. I need to stop for gas and I'm about an hour away from my destination. Fill up get a Gatorade and the thing just won't start back up sitting at the pump. Know my batteries strong. So I get a kind stranger behind the wheel and push it to a hotel that luckily shares the parking lot with the gas station. I buy a 200 dollar hotel room an hour away from my buddies place and I'm thinking starter, ignition switch, or starter fuse. Ive never seen a car just not even attempt to crank before and I'm whacking on the starter pulling fuses jiggling the keys and youtubeing my ass off. After watching a chrisfix vid I know to check for the clutch switch but the design of it in his video is way different and I can't find any wires or any sensors because I'm looking to low on the pedal(around the spring and nut). Then I watch this video and the lightbulb finally turns on and I'm kicking myself for being a complete moron because the same freaking thing already happened to me with the brake light switch and I already have this piece sitting in my glove box because it came in the same pack with the brake light part. So I'm out the price of a hotel room for being a complete moron.

    @JDArrLove Před 4 lety

    (I'm working with a '92 Honda Accord) I could NOT get this to work with my fat ol fingers, sad to say. BUUUUT.... I DID come up with a temporary fix. I simply unscrewed the neutral safety switch and screwed it into where the Cruise Control switch was. (They had the same thread, nice. Otherwise I'd have to press down the neutral switch by hand every time I wanted to start.) The only thing is, now I have to leave the clutch UP and make sure I'm out-of-gear when starting lol (I never could get cruise control to work, and now I know why! Silly plastic stops falling apart after a quarter century. Same thing with my brake pedal and always-on brake lights a year or so ago. Google "Dorman Part 74015" for a quick visual reference.) So: if you just need to get to work in the morning, this is one way of doing it. I'll probably fail my annual safety inspection in a few months as a result. But once it cools down and I have the time, I'll just have to pull apart some paneling to give myself access the to clutch housing and do it right! Cheers to everyone fixing their cruddy old vehicles and not wastefully throwing away what they have in this disposable society we live in. This thing's a reliable old tool that gets me from point A to point B, not a status symbol.
