    Just went here this past weekend…. The place is under construction but it is still so cool. All the weeds are gone and the place looks like the moon surface! Went there looking to see if any bucket loaders dug up any of the ground and I was not disappointed. There were huge mounds of clay down by the water. I was searching for the holy grail of amber but came away disappointed. Please be careful by the waters edge it is like quicksand and you sink and can’t get your foot out!

      @@andrewchiles1390 yes I did on memorial day weekend ! There is construction there currently but there were no machines or anyone there just a lot of dirt moved into a pile and gravel lated out just past this are the clay pits. So I suspect there will still be accessible even after construction or at least nearby areas with clay throughout the area. We went twice once at night with Longwave UV flashlights and once during the day in the rain (rain helps wet the amber to see it better). Had a bit more success with UV. Also don't expect big pieces we spent hours and found lots of little ones no bugs or plant matter in the amber unfortunately. Also the amber EXTREMELY brittle if you squeeze so pieces too much picking up the will turn into DUST. When collecting or transporting them I recommend you store them in a container with water

We found a few nice small pcs of amber. There was a surprising bit of charcoal. I very respectfully disagree with the person below that it is lignite. Seems the digging has brought this to the surface. I highly suggest anyone thinking about going better get going! Try to go on a sunny day makes it a little easier to spot the amber. Wanted to give an update on the location^^ I took the drive up for my birthday with a few friends, and the whole place got completely worked/flattened over with vehicles. It had active construction vehicles when we went in the evening, but we tried to find some away from where they were working and didnt have much luck. We had a great time, but I dont think this is a great spot for Amber anymore with how its being developed :( A shame they would build over a place like this, This was my first time going out to do something like this, so our technique might have been at fault, but I thought it would be worth reporting back about the current state of the place. I wish anyone else who makes the trip out the best of luck! Edit: Saw some people talking below about the land getting sold and construction and wanted to specify that no buildings were going up yet, it was a couple of dozers pushing around dirt (that got moved there not the clay) into a 2/3 story pile, no one gave us any trouble for being there!

  • @AlbredaWelde
    @AlbredaWelde Před rokem

    Just a word of caution, this land has apparently been sold and is in the process of being developed. We were there last year and a fellow drove by in a pickup with some construction logo on it. He didn't say anything to us, but we were well away from the side of the site that they were working on. Stay close to the side with the apartment complex adjacent. If they get the idea that rockhounds are a problem, they'll cut off access for everyone. Also, the black "charcoal" is lignite. It is the lignite pockets/layer that give you the indication that you are hitting an area where the amber should be present. The digging can be hard, but the sifting and crumbling of the clods of clay to find the amber is tedious. Patience pays off, though. My GF found a piece the size of a 6 sided dice. The larger concentration of what you find on the surface will be chips that have been turned up when people dug for larger pieces. The rain washes the mud away from them leaving them to glisten on the surface. If you are content with small bits, you can just walk and pick the exposed chips up from the surface. An easy way to display them is to go to the dollar store and get tiny glass bottles, fill with mineral/baby oil, and drop the amber chips in. It saves the need for polishing (which breaks them apart and diminishes their size). Remember, folks, whatever you do while rockhounding will come back on the whole community. Be polite, don't vandalize or destroy things, and pack out your trash!

Walking across the tracks we were startled to find a young teenager just standing there on a high dirt mound with a gun across his shoulders smiling at us. Needless to say he saw us coming the whole time but we didn't see him. Apparently he was hunting with a another person. Since we weren't shot we continued on to the clay pits. It is so surreal there especially on a cold day. Immediately my son began finding small pieces of amber and charcoal. We found about 20 pcs and decided to call it quits. What I do not understand is how does the amber work its way to the surface through the thick clay? There is a lot of yellow stone there too where is that from? Old river beds that dried up? How would you recommend removing the slag when using a steel can crucible like you did?

    • @BBermsWorld
      @BBermsWorld Před rokem

      I use a small steel fire poker that fits into the steel cans to "scrape" it off the top of the liquid metal, it's not 100% perfect but it does a good enough job! I'm sure a spoon or something similar would work too just be careful and don't get burnt

    I was planning on going this week for the first time, have you by any chance heard if they have started the construction? I really would love to go at least once. It’s so sad that a place so ample with Amber will be turned to a suburban street.

      I have not been up since late July but there were no signs of construction yet, it will be sad to see it be developed but it might be worth a trip to see if it's still open! I can't guarantee they haven't started since then though :(

      @@BBermsWorld Thank you! So I DID in fact make it this week. While it does look like there were a few wooden stakes where some type of test was done in the distance, everything looks the same from the videos! It does seem like things will be happening in the future and I did see tire tracks but it still looks clear and I was undisturbed the full hour and a half I was there. I'd like to go back again soon and suggest anyone interested, should do the same. In fact I would love if anyone with more experience that may be interested in going, let me know. I'd be happy to meet up with some good people and gain any kind of experience in having more success. I found a cul de sac very close that allowed me access to the clay pits within a 3 to 4 minute walk. I think I saw some coyotes on the trek back but they were harmless. My trip was done quite on the spur of the moment so i wasn't as prepared as I'd like to have been but it was still so awesome to actually be there! I definitely need to watch the video more and figure out the best methods to find the Amber as I only found a few pieces worth picking up but I am a complete first timer novice that decided to do this on the whim and was still able to find some! I must say that it's quite exciting to say that I have personally found real Amber in the wild. I don't know if these were present when you went, but along with the random pits that make the site recognizable, it looks like someone with a back-hoe actually dug right into the clay pits in a few spots, one in particular being around 8 to 10 feet deep at it's furthest point. the way it was done (due to depth in a single spot and what looked like to be a gradual decline on one side for what i assume was for persons to walk down into) i'd say this was originally done by others looking for Amber. Most likely a funded excavation by a school or group). I hopped in there hoping to maybe get lucky in finding larger pieces (as I've read that 8 to 9 feet is the sweet spot for more prominent specimens), but obviously, the clay is very very durable and proved difficult to see well. I had a small camping shovel that took quite a severe bend after i got a little to overzealous taking a chunk out. A good deal of water would be needed to wash off any of the thick and light grey clay that covers anything and everything you may find in there, which i must say didn't seem to be a lot but i was only in there for a short while as i did't have the proper tools to investigate better with. Two of the pots/pits do have standing water as of the day i went so as long as you have a bottle, you should have no problem getting water, but it goes fast and i took many of trips to retrieve more water. Definitely worth the trip and I REALLY want to go back. So my offer/request stands for anyone reading this. . . . If you would like company or would be so inclined to help a fellow explorer gain some knowledge and hopefully better luck finding some of the amber here before it's gone forever, I am open to going back. Also any suggestions as to where exactly to look and ny procedures or any other suggestions will be taken with much appreciation! Thank you for making this video. I am going to study it some more before i make the trek again.

      @@thespyinthecab7538 That is fantastic! I am so happy your trip went well and the construction has not yet started! Those deeper pits must be new but with the right tools they seem to be the perfect depth for some potential insect-included pieces. Thank you so much for your detailed description of the area this week, I hope you have inspired others to get out there soon!
