I think I can answer for Grimes why everyone likes Homer. He makes his co-workers laugh, even if he doesn't do anything. He is a good friend to Lenny and Carl, and they enjoy his company. Mr. Burns likes him because even with all the constant suffering he puts him through, he does it for one person ... Maggie. Better yet, he loves the powerplant the way it is (which Mr. Burns is thankful for), and they know what it's like to be made fun of for their baldness. That's all I have to say. R.I.P. Grimes.

It makes sense why Homer won. Ralf’s was too luxurious and would be too costly to keep running. Martin’s was way too efficient and would have threatened Mr. Burns’ own power plant so he needed to ensure his dreams were crushed so he wouldn’t have competition. Homer basically complimented Mr. Burns’ design but added enough originality to show he had initiative and drive.

This is one of my favourite episodes because I used to be just like Grimes. I worked so hard, earnt fuck all, and was treated like shit. Six or seven years, and a few jobs later, I work more like Homer and i'm better paid. I swear, just keep trying is the answer.
