Sketching Historic Fort Wilkins - Episode 30
In this episode I'm in Michigan's Upper Peninsula at Fort Wilkins State Park to do some sketching of an historic Army fort. This fort is situated not he peninsula with the town of Copper Harbor to the west, Lake Superior to the north and east and Lake Fannie Hooe to the south. Special thanks to the Tom and Thomas who were painting one of the forts old buildings and generously took time to talk to me about their work. You can camp right at the State Park in designated camping spots, but be advised to book well in advance during the summer months as the Park is quite busy during peak seasons.

    I wonder how many of these old forts are still around. I know that Ft. Worden here in Washington is still around. If you have ever watched the movie starring Richard Gere called an Officer and a Gentleman, you would have seen a bit of Ft. Worden. Some of the exterior shots were filmed in Port Townsend, WA. If you could locate all the old forts, you could do an old fort series and maybe get a chance to travel around the country.

    • @owingsart

      Greetings Donna - Not sure how many still exist and in this condition. Despite being abandoned for 40 years, it was so well built to begin with and so remote that almost all of the buildings survived. I'll have to look up Ft. Worden. Yes, Officer and a Gentleman is a favorite movie. Loved Gere and Debra Winger and the supporting cast. I'd love to do a historical series, but alas I am not rich. :-) Thanks for stopping by and leaving a nice note Donna. Have a great week.

    Maybe I misunderstood but you would think they would have plein air painters/sketchers all the time. Oh well, every place is different and you did say it was remote. The painters sounded very friendly, great to see them doing such a great job.

      Hi Essie - Not sure because it's pretty remote. At any rate the Ranger was very cool about it and if he'd been around earlier I would have been sure to ask permission. I had to edit the conversation with the painters (Thomas and Tom) down because we talked for about an hour, lol.

      Hi There @dannysvinalrainbow4852 - Yes, you're right about the Microns, but I also love them for that reason because sometimes I can get great ink washes with them and mix that in with my wc's, but you're right, they will reactivate when wet. I use an inexpensive pilot precise V7 pen if I want perm ink that doesn't reactivate easily. Also the FC liners and Pitt Pens are fantastic. Thanks for watching and leaving this comment. Much appreciated. - Marty

    Wonderful to see it still standing. But for me sad it surrounded by what we call progress. Totally appreciate the art of its' construction. My father built our entire frame house in Miami in the late mid 60"s using nothing but hand tools. When hurricane Michael hit and much newer construction was destroyed, it didn't move an inch. There is much beauty in the carpentry of the past.

      Hi Denise - Where abouts on the Canadian side? I was in Wawa not too many years ago and also a few other great towns on Superior. Loved Canada and the people I met on that trip. Lived in Montreal for 2 years when I was a kid. Absolutely LOVED it there.

    Ya leaving the colors to sit like you did leaves time for them to soak in. Like I’d swatch the color then put water on it, then do the next color, then put water on it. The darker colors are more likely to soak in faster.

      @@kathyhackney7950 they do! It's a bit more like cellulose paper (though it's a different beast from that too) so you may find you don't like it as much for watercolour itself BUT... it is amazing for anything water-soluble like markers, pencils, sticks etc. They reactivate readily and the surface is quite smooth and very sturdy (I use my Ecoline markers on it as well and those normally easily pill my cotton and cellulose watercolour paper... but not the bamboo paper!) , so it will leave less drawing marks & there is no pilling

  • @starshinesoldier
    @starshinesoldier Před 14 dny

    It’s good that they dissolve better on cellulose watercolor paper. But for an artist grade Winsor and Newton watercolor marker, I would want them to dissolve completely too, or at least without the harsh lines. Otherwise I would just use the dye based Tombows or something similar. Thanks for the updated review Marty!

  • @kellywilson2147
    @kellywilson2147 Před 14 dny

    Nit picky? Not at all! No one wants a paint that doesn't blend well!n I can definitely see a difference on each paper you tested, but the new set is certainly not the same quality as your old set. Companies are always trying to cut corners for profit gain, and I think that Winsor & Newton has changed something in these markers. I'm not a brand snob, but I have an autoimmune disease that makes me overly sensitive to smells and fragrance. When I find a product that works and doesn't give me side effects, I will stock up on it because companies are always "new and improving" things, making them unusable for me. TMI, I know. Maybe that's what's up with these markers! Unless there is something wrong or you have numerous complaints, leave it be. I wonder if these would perform better on vellum paper? I will say that they are pretty colors, but that lemon yellow is sad. Thanks for doing a follow-up video!

    • @owingsart
      @owingsart Před 14 dny

      Thank you for this, I really appreciate your thoughts. Having to deal with an autoimmune disease must be a huge burden, not just in art supplies but just about everything the rest of us take for granted. I wish these were still made in France with the same formula or process, but I understand that people do not like paying more for products and the competition is stiff out there. Still, I thought the originals were selling well. I loved them. Hope you have a great day and thanks for the comments.

      Thanks Charlotte. I don’t remember that being an issue in 2015, but then again that was a long time ago. In the sketches at the end of the video, you can see I did add water almost immediately and they did okay there. Thanks for watching and for the tip.
