The Best Enclosed Diode Laser - My xTool S1 Laser Review
Here is my formal review of the xTool S1 20W fully enclosed laser engraver and laser cutter. After about a month of use, I have put this laser through the paces as an absolutely beginner. There's plenty to like about this laser, but also a few shortcomings. Will it find a permanent spot in my shop?

    I just bought the Bosch yesterday, and I think I might return it, especially if I can find a Makita for the same price like you did. The deflection is inexcusable. And also, you said it : the handle is big beyond comparison! It really makes for a cumbersome use that sorta makes you want to reassure your hand just before hitting the stock to cut.

      Too bad that you ran into the same issue. I know quite a few people with great Glides, but it’s been interesting to see other folks note their issues in the video. The Makita remains great for me with only minor issues at full extension.

      Thanks for watching! I hadn't heard of the ACMER P3 but just took a look and it's a nice looking enclosed laser. I'd imagine the experience would be similar to what I had with my Creality Falcon2 Pro where the unit and laser itself are great, but dialing in the focus and settings takes some trial and error. Likely great for those experienced with lasers, but the xTool S1 is in a class of it's own as far as ease of use using their XCS software. Of course, this is all my opinion as a laser beginner.

    Welcome to the club. The parallel guide and rail square parallel guides are very useful in getting accurate cuts straight from the sheet. I am redoing my sheet cutting table to allow for the hinge system, fence, and to do rip cuts with the parallel guide. This way I cut once on the sheet goods and I know things are accurate. Lumber will also get cut on the table. Thanks to these items, I can move away from the mft table idea. I don’t need mft things as most of my cuts are using the hinge, track saw and the fence. The biggest advantage for the system. If someone like me who has zero experience can cut square cuts, anyone can.

    • @MasonWoodshop
      @MasonWoodshop Před 6 dny

      Thanks! I have the TSO Parallel Guides but haven’t found myself reaching them on smaller projects for some reason as I can never remember if they’re currently calibrated. 🤦‍♂️

    • @asderven
      @asderven Před 6 dny

      @@MasonWoodshop I use the parallel guides to get the first few cuts done accurately until the sheet is a manageable size and I can use the fence, hinge and track saw. I prefer keeping my 8’x4’ sheet as is during transportation. I usually end up with less waste. If I precut them in 1/2, I found I had more scraps.

    Hey my friend, Another job well done with the xTool S1! I would love to see a xTool software tutorial from you. I think if you had a video to show your audience and newbie’s how to use the software will greatly help those who just got their laser and those still thinking about it. Again, great job👍👏 I’ve been working on some cool projects until yesterday. I turned on the S1, opened the software, and lo and behold, no matter where I placed the laser head, the software still showed it in the upper left corner. I couldn’t figure out the issue until I realized the cable for the air assist was damaged. The damaged cable caused the laser not to communicate with the software. Once I removed the cable from the back of the unit and turned off the laser, everything returned to normal. However, I now have no air assist because of the damaged cable. I reached out to xTool, and they’re sending me a replacement cable. Luka from tech support has been amazing. There hasn’t been a moment where I felt ignored, Luka kept reaching out to make sure things has been resolved, he is always on top of my case by keeping in touch. So, if xTool’s is reading this, I would like thank you for having an awesome employee “Luka” for his passion and carefulness working with his customers. Section 29:31 may seem like a lot of money, but when you break it down, from the quality of the packaging to the hardware build, I think it is priced just right. Most folks don’t realize how many employees are involved in the development of XTool’s products. Almost like Apple, everyone has a specific responsibility, from architectural design, building and testing a prototype model, to testing the final product. Plus, there’s another department just for user experience and implementation. The xTool team is huge compared to any other laser company I know about. I once thought the price was too high until I got my hands on the XTool S1. The only other exception for excellent build quality and support is the Roly LaserMatic MK2. Even though Roly is new with just a few employees, their laser is also unmatched in build quality and support. The LaserMatic MK2 is very budget-friendly for what you get. For me, the only drawback with Roly products is LightBurn. All of their lasers only use LightBurn, and I find that to be a drawback since it is not user-friendly. I prefer XTool’s software over LightBurn any day. I can get to more projects faster without a lot of settings with XTool’s software compared to LightBurn. Don’t get me wrong, LightBurn is far more powerful than XTool’s, but it is not user-friendly. Yeah, if anyone is considering a laser and not just for basic projects, xTool is something I would highly recommend. xTool’s products are very similar to Apple’s. You may be paying a premium, but the overall quality and functionality of each product are unmatched. If I didn’t own the S1, I would agree with many potential buyers that the price is high, but now that I have the S1, my thoughts have changed.😎

    • @MasonWoodshop
      @MasonWoodshop Před 10 dny

      Thanks for watching and leaving another comment! That's great to hear that you were able to get your issue resolved in such communicative manner. I have yet to have the need to reach out to support, but it's nice to hear your experience with that cable. I continue to be really impressed with the build quality and end-user feel with this product. I really liked the build of the based of the Creality Falcon2 Pro, but the experience just wasn't quite the same. I do think it provides good value and is a good laser overall, but it just wasn't quite the end-user experience I needed as a true beginner. It's been interesting follow the xTool announcement and launch of their F1 Ultra fibre + diode laser. They've done a great job promoting it and the fit and finish of that laser looks absolutely amazing, albeit at a much higher cost than the S1 due to the nature of a fibre laser. I will likely have another couple of videos over the next couple of months, but I'm conscious of not going too hard in the laser space. In about a month I'll do another check-in video on how I have hopefully by then built a custom table for it, implemented a smoke extraction solution, and ventured to new materials and projects. If my comfort continues to improve with the XCS software I may do a video on that in the future. Thanks again for watching and leaving such a great comment!

      @@MasonWoodshop Others say the same. Trouble with the MCR Bosch model that has the rubber grips is it doesn't work in the Bosch router table. And more rounded handles could have some benefits, a reason the Dewalt 618 has those. Doing a lot of dados and the like would seem to make the rubber oval handle types better. Perhaps try applying some gun grip tape at preferred points of the wood handles?

  • @johnclements6614
    @johnclements6614 Před 17 dny

    You can use the stops in either direction. Useful if you are cutting nearly square rectangles so you can use two stops. With metric its best just to use metres and milimetres. If you have something with a 20 dimension then you know its the thickness of a board, small off cut etc (20mm) or the side of a building, very large roof truss (20m). With centmetres there is more room for confusion if you do not state the unit. When you look at your fence you have to just know that 2 is 20mm when you say what it is.

    • @MasonWoodshop
      @MasonWoodshop Před 17 dny

      Great point on using the stops in either direction! I’m getting closer to using mm all the time, which can sometimes be hilarious when I say 2140mm but it’s so much easier!

    Thanks for the overview and demo. I'm not a huge fan of the benchdog hinge because it sits above the bench. The dashboard looks great, but $$$. The newer benchdogs rail square looks nice, I had the same festool/tso square and sold it after not wanting to deal with it tipping or printing a solution. That said, I haven't felt like I needed a rail square since I got my woodpeckers 1281 (aluminum version); it's a bit quicker and easier for me to just line the track up with my mark, square it up with the 1281, and make my cuts. That's mostly just for breaking down b igger panels though. For most cuts my preferred method is just the track with stanton dog locks. I printed my own after purchasing Dave's files and they came out great. I didn't like the ujk clips at all. Thanks for the video!

      @MasonWoodshop Před 18 dny

      Hey! Thanks for watching. I also found myself using my 1281 instead of using the rail square half the time as I never felt I was getting perfectly square cuts with the TSO/Festool - I'm sure it is legitimately square, but the human error of holding it in place resulted in less than square cuts. So far, the Benchdogs has solved this for me as I don't need to focus much on the square.

    Have had my benchdogs hinge for over a year and love it. I liked the fact that it didn’t rely on any t track to mount. I will say the one issue I have with my mft/hinge system is how wide the table is. It’s hard to flip the rail up so that it stays up on its own. I need to figure out a counter weight solution.

    • @MasonWoodshop
      @MasonWoodshop Před 18 dny

      Happy to hear you have such a positive experience as well! My MFT is 960mm deep and I find that’s about the max I could have and still use the hinge effectively without walking around. If it was a bit wider or I was a bit shorter it would be a bit annoying to walk around the table each time.

    • @BenchdogsUK
      @BenchdogsUK Před 18 dny

      Great to hear you love the hinge. A bit of advice is you can tighten the hinge screws to make it tighter this will allow it to be stiffer to take the weight of your track.

    Congrats on the hinge from bench dogs. I have zero doubt you will love the hinge system. You pointed out an obvious thing about the Festool track square, in which I didn't know. I love TSO products but I never put 2 and 2 together to see that TSO track squares are indeed Festool rebranding the TSO product. With that Jason at bourbon moth let slip that Isotunes makes the Festool ear protection . I also would like to say the sky is the limit for you my friend your skills at presenting and your presentation are fun to watch. I like that you left the missed shot of your demonstrating the square of the cut, and you left it in the final edit. Now that I have the S1 doing framing without any issues as shown in your video made for me, are there any shortcoming you can share about the S1 that you don’t like? I’m still debating whether to keep it or not. For me, I don’t like that the honeycomb tray has a tendency to shift during lasering. Additionally, there is a gap between the honeycomb tray and the unit, which is a waste of space. They could have made the honeycomb tray longer to fit the unused space. And because the honeycomb isn’t as big as the unit xTool’s could had condensed the unit frame smaller where it wouldn’t be so oversized. A lot of waste of material. I’m not a fan of LightBurn; however, I do like xTool’s proprietary software. xTool software reminds me of Cricut Design Space, which I am very comfortable using. I’m the type of person who likes things to look pleasing, be easy to use, and functional all at the same time, which is why I use Apple products. LightBurn is powerful and can do a lot, but visually, it's awful. User-friendly? Not at all. LightBurn has too many steps to complete one task, with too much redundancy in the software. I also like xTool’s precise positioning and would love to have a camera as well. I am going to see how accurate the precise positioning is later today by engraving pencils and toothpicks. If there are any drawbacks for precise positioning when doing batching, it will be time-consuming. This is where a camera would come in handy. Otherwise, I too need to put it through several tests to determine if it is worth the $2,200 I paid for. I will provide updates. 😎

      That’s great you got the framing to work! I’ve been using the S1 a lot over the past month on many different materials (including glass and stainless steel) with great success. I am planning to post a review video on or around May 31 where I’ll note what I like and what I don’t like. Like you, I really like the XCS software and I think we’re both lucky to have experience the v2.0 version as the previous seemed to get a lot of negative feedback. I’ve been using Lightburn while testing the Creality Falcon2 Pro laser and while the software is quite powerful, it’s much less accessible for a beginner like me. Without spoiling the next video, a couple of thinks I don’t like are the size of the honeycomb (wish it were a bit larger with a more click-in fit) and not having enough space under to effectively clear smoke. I also wish there was a home button on the unit that could automatically move the laser to one of the back corners for honeycomb and material management as well as control over the fan as I don’t think it runs long enough after the cut. On the positive side, I absolutely love the beginner friendliness of the unit and XCS software. Setting the focus with the pin is amazing and something that wasn’t great on the Creality and the pinpointing layout method is also quite amazing. I have seen some people use the mobile app with a camera-like function but I haven’t tried that myself. I do plan on getting the riser base and potentially rotor tool so I can play around with other things but the main thing I want to address is managing the smoke as right now I just pipe it out my garage door.

      @@MasonWoodshopI can’t wait for your next video. Not sure if you’re aware, but I too am a CZcams content creator, and once I learned you were also going to do a video on the laser, I decided there was no need for me to make one. You've been doing such an awesome job. I’m not into numbers; I just love to share my points of view on all sorts of products. That said, I may have an answer to address the smoke: the Genmitsu MD13 Smoke Purifier. This is perfect for the S1. The S1 hose fits right on the air filter without needing any clamps. I will admit, I haven’t done any heavy cutting and engraving to determine how adequately the purifier draws the smoke, but it seems to do a great job for what I’ve been doing at the moment. And its price tag is not insane. Again, my friend, I’m looking forward to another amazing video from you and will definitely be sending folks over to watch 👍😎 Genmitsu MD13 Smoke Purifier: www.amazon.com/dp/B0CTHPMYWP?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

      @@LouRao Looks like you have quite the collection of videos, nicely done! Big thanks for the link to the purifier, that's a solution I'm definitely going to consider as it seems to be similar to a few of the other purifiers out there but at about half the price. I'm deciding between going with an inline fan to an outside vent or going the purification route. The only thing I don't like about the purifiers is the cost of replacement filters.

    Before I built my large shop, I worked out of a 1 car garage shop for 30+ years. It forces you to think out of the box to fit all of your tools and still have enough space to build things. I built a similar tracksaw table and got around the hose problem by mounting a couple of small pulleys to the wall and ceiling. Just thread the 550 cord thru the pulleys and tie off to the hose. Pull up vacuum hose as needed.

    If you use the festool limit stops at the beginning and end of the rectangular cut outs you can line them up with the lines on your track saw and do a perfect plunge cut that cant go past the limit stop. Yeah youd probably still have to jig saw or router the short sides but you cant get a nicer, straighter cut then with the track saw.
