At-latl not ata latyl
It is pronounced SIN-Yew (sinew). Chum.
Well done video explaining the use of such a primitive but extremely effective weapon, amazing to me that most peoples of the world figured out its use😎😎😎
Great video bra! The art work on some of those is absolutely beautiful. That bison turning its head !!!
A couple of things. First, the fletched darts used with the spear thrower had a wide range in length. A set found along with a spear thrower in a cave in Northern California near Lake Shasta were around a meter long. They were fletched, and without the spear thrower also present, would have been thought to be arrows. Second, that particular spear thrower lacked a spur. In stead, it had a short span of sinew across a notch in the distal end. The darts were slotted like the end of an arrow that engages a bow string. One other thing that might help along the way is that when you throw the dart, if you complete your throw with the thrower point at your target, you may have an easier time hitting the target. The reason is that the spear thrower remains in a vertical plane that passes the target and through which your throwing motion moves when you launch the dart. If you allow the thrower to move off to one side as it rotates, you add a horizontal rotation to your dart that forces it off to one side of your target. This can be compensated for during aiming, but it's more effort and demands far more consistency in the arm motion.
@@theeddorianI like the throwing advice that seems pretty logical. I just wanted to demonstrate what it would look like. I just throw for funsies. Also as far as archeology goes, This may have been located in Nevada instead but the word Shasta sounds familiar. They found a atlatl in a layer underneath a Shasta ground sloth in a cave which I thought was pretty cool I wish it was dated to paleo times but turned out to be archaic in time
These were used in the movie Quest for Fire.
Great job on the video. I'm going to use this video as an example of expository informative documentary with a smooth and comfortable voice-over containing just a sprinkling of slang. Thanks, buddy.
@@chrisking2796 thanks!
Woomeras is the name of only one of 400 indigenous Australian languages and just as there are numerous indigenous art styles there are different styles of spear throwers. If you compare the photos of the flat throwers from central Australia (one of your earlier photos with that of the man from Northern Australia holding a spear and spear thrower you can clearly see they are distinct.
@@sheilbwright7649 Looks like I’ve just scratched the surface. That’s interesting
@@PaleoPassion One of the many sad things about colonialism in Australia is the rendering of a diverse group (some 900 distinct groups) into a singular "the Aborigines" To this day the right wing in Australia has a special interest in misinformation on anything to do with indigenous Australians to the extent that they even argue over the length of indigenous settlement. The last academic work I read placed it at 50,000 years but that may move backwards as our knowledge increases. With at least 50,000 years it may well pop up in your work. For accuracy and sensitivity beware of any generalisations in the sources you consult because I am certain you would like to be as accurate and sensitive as possible.
@@PaleoPassion Sorry if the last comes across as patronizing that wasn't intended. If I didn't respect your work I would have been unambiguously rude, very rude. I do rude well.
@@sheilbwright7649 Oh you’re fine. I live in the States and don’t have much background knowledge on Australia in general. I wanted to briefly introduce the Woomera in this video. I know it’s horrible how the indigenous peoples of Australia have been treated it’s the same situation as the United States Native Americans.
Believe it or not, not commonly known, the Roman Legions used them!
@@anthonyburke5656 Didn’t know that, that’s pretty cool!
In my neck of the woods, it’s called a Woomera

Just a question. Why are hominids always portrayed as dark . I would have thought it made more sense this skin was lighter.
@@franckorphanos2998 great question, so our ancestors like our hominids and hominins here originated in Africa, there was lots of sun and would have been on the equator line. Light skin didn’t appear until human species migrated up north and far north there is a lack of vitamin D and this took thousands of years to happen. This is genetic mutation and This was the case for Neanderthals, experts think they were light skin and some had red hair
@@PaleoPassion I was thinking of the hairy ones. Most animals are white under fur . I do understand sun etc . And noses .
If I ever get a Time Machine, I’m gonna take a case of Bic lighters back in time. Then I’ll sell them fire extinguishers.
Pro tip in general, forget Bic's, Clipper's cost essentially the same, but are refillable, plus you can change the entire spark mechanism, or just the flint. What Bic's can be better at is the flatter shape and smaller size of the minis.
My son runs survival courses in south Africa. He's got the fire bow down to a fine art. I never get used to seeing fire started in this way. Always seems miraculous
Thank you 😊
@@terrybrady1644 no thank you for watching
Looks like you are interested in fire. I know something about it that very very few know. Prometheus's First Fire from Heaven is about the destructive phenomena of The Taurid Meteor Stream. When we cross the nighttime Halloween Fireballs, The Taurids, they seems to emanate from The Pleiades, this is the Ancient New Year and all the fires would be put out to simulate impact winter and then New Fires would be made by old methods. BTW, it is global, also, said stream is estimated to be ~20ka.
Was the first fire created by a black person ? if so are black peoples inherently responsible for global warming?.
Do more paleoanthropology vids, neandertalensis, erectus and ergaster and the gang ! 🤙

Been seeing this video in my recommended a couple times, wish I hadn’t sat on it for so long cause I thought it was pretty good! If you plan on doing more archeological/historical videos in the future, I would recommend citing the sources you use. You don’t have to cite literally everything, but just the general places you got your historical information, or whenever you quote something. It helps keep historical videos more professional and honest. Hope this helps!
Hey I really appreciate this! I’ll cite some sources in the description! Next one is gonna be the Atlatl

I really enjoyed the video and hope to see more :) The only thing I would say is that the music is very slightly too loud for my taste, but again, great video and I subscribed either way :)
Stay curious my friends, focus on science.
I've always thought that the difficulty of starting fire is where the idea of an eternal flame came from. Once you get a fire going, you've got to keep it going. If there is at least one flame that's maintained in a village, everyone can use it to light their personal hearth.
Also, in the Promethean legend, he stole it from the forge of Hephaestus on Mount Olympus. He was punished for this by the gods. I think this is an allegory for someone capturing an ember from a volcanic mountain, then becoming ill from the toxic fumes he was exposed to.
Yes the prehistoric movie A Quest For Fire portrays this with hominids and other Native American cultures practice this too in some regions like the Pacific Northwest. Prometheus is a interesting story, it could be borrowed or influenced from an even older culture just like many other myths.
Enjoy learning, thank you.
Very informative and interesting. Like these style of videos keep it up!
Note from the creator, I may be overthinking this but Sorry if I was a little awkward through out the video, I wanted to use my professional voice, but I now realize the style doesn’t suit everyone. I am a bit camera shy and I’m willing to work on that by doing videos like these for practice. I will try to be more loose and more like myself in the next video project. Thanks to those understanding
Just be yourself! I think you did a great job. Keep creating, I love learning this stuff
Bro you did a fine job just maybe try a less professional vocabulary it would fit really well
Heya, is that music from one of the elder scrolls games? Sounds familiar. Anyway, the music level is too high. Just a little bass-boost or high-pass filter on the mic would help too. Good video.
I agree. This video has fascinating and thorough info I was specifically looking for. But your tone was flat and bland. You sounded like you were reading from a script. (Of course, all narrators read from a script, but it is the interesting narrators that sound like they are winging it from memory.) Tex of the Black Pants Legion makes AMAZING documentaries. He will be a great mentor to follow. He's super generous with his wisdom so hit him up personally (BPL- Tex BPL <THEBlackPantsLegion@gmail.com>) and I'll bet he'll be delighted to help a new documentarian. I'll message him and let him know about you. Keep up the good work! I'll be watching more of your stuff for sure.

I was walking on my way to work lol and this tulip poplar wood was freshly cut down by landscapers, I asked if I could have some and they were like sure take as much as you want! I batoned it with a knife and whacked it down with a wooden mallet. This is the best way for a beginner to obtain a fire board. I’ve been wanting to work with tulip poplar for a while now and I saw the opportunity to take one that was down already and so now I will wait for the wood to dry
@@PaleoPassion nice! I'm trying to figure out how to split the stuff I have without steel, the pine has a nice crack in it I think I could get a wedge into by the cottonwood idk. I was thinking maybe if I sawed into the end with stone then stuck a wooden wedge in the end maybe I could get it done 🤔
@@user-tx6hz9ll8m yes I think you can! Also this fire board I made is for a bow drill which personally I like to make thicker in girth, and the hand drill boards thinner. But you can totally wedge and whack that wood to split Are you using pine or cottonwood for the fire board?
