NUS Guitar Ensemble (GENUS)

Formed in 1981 by Mr Alex Abisheganaden, the NUS Guitar Ensemble (GENUS) is a 50-member strong ensemble. As the region's first Niibori guitar ensemble and the pioneer group in Singapore to use Niibori guitars, GENUS has set a benchmark for local guitar ensembles. Under the guidance of their music director, Dr. Robert Casteels, the ensemble has been expanding its repertoire to include works ranging from classical pieces to pop songs to traditional folk tunes. From de Falla’s opera La Vida Breve comes the dance under the spurious title of Spanish Dance No. 1. The complete opera is seldom performed today, but the music for the energetic dance lives on and is popular in concerts featuring Spanish music. Arranged for the Niibori ensemble by Kazuyuki Terada, this fast-paced rhythmic piece might just stir you to start dancing.

Wonderful idéa, interpretation and arrangement! I´ve lissened to many different recordings of this piece the last months and this is absolutely one of a few higligts that really gave me a strong musical impression.
