Out & about in the Yorkshire Dales for this aerial exploration. Interesting quarry on the tops which has been closed and is being converted into a major tourist and recreation centre apparently. I just like to have a really good look around new & interesting areas, hope you do too! Many thanx for taking the trouble to share my video, JimC.

A sedate aerial tour around this proud and well-kept defensive bastion - very interesting to see everything from such a privileged viewpoint. Fascinating to study and learn from - leading some to enquire further into these magnificent relics from so long ago. Many more castles available on this channel, please search further if interested, thanx for looking, JimC.

    Hello again, it’s me and again still proud to announce I’m so pleased I’m a former Witherslack lad and in fact, I’m coming up to the Derby Arms on the 17th of July for three nights. As you may know, the Derby Arms is at the end of Witherslack Village virtually opposite the Joe carriageway . If you happen to be in the area, please drop by the Derby Arms and it would be nice to meet you. Again, the days at Witherslack Hall were fantastic as far as I’m concerned and again, I’d have loved it had that School turned into a further education college, including had they taken over the adjacent farm, as I gladly have gone back years ago trained and stayed for a job as a member of staff on the farm and taking on other jobs there.

      Hi Paul, thanx for watching & commenting - sorry I failed to tell you that I'd published this one. I'm sadly currently in hospital, but hoping to escape soon (!). I don't know how many of my videos of Lakes you've already seen (worldwide currently 270 published total), but my first - of Bassenthwaite Lake was published May 9th 2020 and almost all 2020/21 were of Lakes. You already told me you only watch Lakes so maybe there's tons you haven't yet seen & maybe would like? Reason is that I have an earlier Beacon Tarn video (published Aug 20, 2020) that I prefer to this one. It was my first view & I met the Farmer & for the one & only time I think, he welcomed me and happens to be a very nice chap; I made a DVD for him as a thank you & he invited me back to his farm to make another one of Beacon Tarn - this being it. Anyway, why not visit my channel & look through all the videos to find if you've seen them? My Lakes District ones are fewer in number these days ('cos I started running out of new places to go - sorry!), but still some surprises yet to come! Great to hear from you again - are you still subscribed 'cos I recently published one from Dent village, Cumbria & Esthwaite Water that you may like? Cheers & take care, thanx again, JimC.

I have 2 emails and the second email was set up so I can comment on this and other CZcams’s but I haven’t received any emails ( as far as I can tell) without signing out of my first email. Is your email publicly available on here? I can’t see it. I wouldn’t know yet how to post photos on CZcams. I will also need to find the photo first. I would be keen on contacting Shaun Warburton as I definitely knew him in the mid to late 1980s but not sure if he remembers me. I had a similar issue at a past employer 30 years ago and staff can’t remember me! Getting back to being subscribed to CZcams , I am a regular viewer to Funky Prepper, an ex army person living in Wales and I subscribed to his Chanel but haven’t received emails or notifications as I am using my second email and can’t access anything there. There may be messages but I haven’t seen anything. It’s possible Shaun Warburton may have contacted me. He is on Facebook and I believe he is the person behind the setting up of Facebook for Broughton Tower. I don’t have a Facebook account at present. Any suggestions for posting the photo online will be helpful.

    Hello, once again, I can only reiterate again and again, Witherslack Hall, no known as Oversands School is by far a great school and again, I honestly wish it had turned into a college. I will head up this way at some point, though I was going to head up in July this year, but with the train strikes, unfortunately that put a dampener on it. Not to worry, I’ll be back up this way soon and I would love to have a go at Operating a drone and maybe we could meet up if you’re in the area if you like. Again, I had an absolute ball when I was at that school, never perfect but on the whole and by far the best and the right school I attended. I even liked the school uniform and all the clothes we were provided as I was never fussy, and when I first began at Witherslack, when I was 11 years old plus, I just couldn’t wait to be issued with the clothes and I never ever looked back.

    • @FlightsOfFancy2020
      @FlightsOfFancy2020 Před 9 měsíci

      Hello @zigzagsox, sorry not familiar with the term but let me guess: did you mean transitions where there is camera movement directly before and directly after the transition? If so, mainly 'cos I'm a complete beginner at video editing! Plus I was going through a daft phase when I was concentrating way too much on taking photos, so the stops/pauses were much more frequent than they should have been. Also, I failed to stop properly so a lot of the video clip start/ends had movement. Since then I've discovered a way of dealing with the editing better, reducing the photos, controlling my stops - unfortunately I was way behind with editing so it took a long time for me to realise my errors. I hope this didn't put you off watching? But thanx for the criticism - it was no fun doing the editing, I can assure you! Thanx again, please check out some others from me.

      The Hoad Hill Monument was known as the Pepper Pot to people at Broughton Tower. I just learned that the public are allowed up this monument on Sundays so I will be making arrangements to visit it soon when the weather picks up. The tower at Darwen in Lancashire is known as the Jubilee Tower standing at around 85 feet tall. It was built during the commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. The tower is open to the public. I visit Darwen a lot. I did a little research on the Hoad Monument in Ulverston and it’s interesting to note that they celebrated the Queen Victoria Jubilee there as well with a large bonfire. It’s worth noting that the Lake District mountains are visible from Darwen Tower on a fine day.

It is well worth a return visit after heavy rainfall. You shouldn’t have too long to wait! The journey along the road from Keswick to Buttermere is so attractive, especially the winding steep descent into Buttermere. From Newlands Hause you can easily walk up Knott Rigg to the north, leading to a fine ridge walk along to Ard Crags. I walked the parallel ridge of Whiteless Pike, Wandope, Crag Hill and Sail on the last day of my holiday in May. I started the walk at the lovely spot of Rannerdale Farm on the shore of Crummock Water, finishing at the Swinside Inn, an old watering hole. Hi Jim, great to see another of your videos in this series. You have certainly found some of the best viewpoints in this stunning area of The Lakes. I liked the way the flight started with the low pan up Rigg Beck, accompanied by atmospheric music. It built up the anticipation before you slowly flew the drone higher to reveal the stunning valley of Rigg Beck cutting through the ridges leading to Buttermere. It is possible to follow the track to the right of the beck all the way to Buttermere. The distinctive dome of Causey Pike stands tall on the right or North side of the valley, with the foreboding Scar Crags leading on towards the rounded dome of Sail. In many lights Scar Crags appear almost black, with multiple gullies “scarring” it’s steep flanks. On the left or South of the beck are Aikin Knott and Ard Crags, which lead on via a lovely ridge walk to Knott Rigg and then down to Newlands Hause above Buttermere. As you pan round to the left you see the road to Buttermere, bordered by the farmstead of Birkrigg. It opens up the view of the majestic Robinson and the High Stile ridge in the centre distance. As the drone tracks around it takes in Hindscarth, Dale Head and the ridge leading northwards comprising High Spy, Maiden Moor and the ever popular Catbells. I am looking forwards to your fourth instalment, so keep editing! All the best, Paul

      Hi again Paul, wow another comprehensive 'narration' of my flight! Makes things much more interesting for me. Glad that you enjoyed the video and hope that you will enjoy #4 the same. I'm having a break from editing for a few days, nearly caught up but still some left to be done. Since early March I've edited 101 and uploaded 71. My problem is that some time around last year I seem to have reverted to my original passion of photography, thus neglecting the video, and interrupting filming to take photos (weird 'cos I rarely even look at the photos that I take when flying!). This results in the films being interrupted many times, and my videos need to be spliced from up to 21 clips. This makes for a lot more work and sometimes inferior results. I don't know why I started doing this, but by March this year I had a backlog of loads of unedited, troublesome videos to be edited - and only then did I realise that I'd been doing it. My first trip to the Newlands area led to my campervan engine blowing up, and had to be 'recovered' to home by the AA. I returned in the car shortly after and did the filming. Campervan still not been fixed so my summer's been kind of 'on hold'! Thanx again Paul, #4 coming soon! JimC.

    Hi Jim, I hope you are well. I thoroughly enjoyed the drone footage of this lovely area. I liked the image of the dead tree at the beginning, with the view of the hamlet of Little Town beyond. Behind Little Town was the attractive ridge of Looking Crag, knott End and High Crags leading up to Bull Crag and the summit of Maiden Moor. As the drone tracked around to the right it captured the stunning panorama of the three fells of Dale Head, Hindscarth and Robinson at the head of the Newlands Valley. The spoil heaps of the abandoned Goldscope Lead Mines added interest to the approach to Hindscarth. The parallel ridge of Hlgh Snab Bank leads up to the summit of Robinson, with High Snab Farm sitting in a perfect location at the base. Panning to the right reveals a great aspect of Scar Crags, Causey Pike and Rowling End. Not far from Little Town is the beautiful Newlands Church and former School House, which is well worth a visit. It was obscured by trees in your footage. Previously we discussed Swinside fell and the lack of a public right of way. It is privately owned and consists of forestry and habitat for pheasants for game shooting. I understand that permission can be requested from the owner for access. Finally, good luck with your editing. I appreciate that it is time consuming, but the results are so worthwhile. All the best, Paul

Your drone footage did the area proud! Cat bells and Causey Pike are familiar fells to so many and I walked up them during my recent holiday. The last lump of Causey Pike is not for the feint hearted. It was good to see the section showing the Swinside Inn and the fell, also called Swinside, behind it. This is one of the few fells that gives no access to the public, which is a shame as I’m sure the views from the top would be excellent. The only way to view the fell up close is by using a drone. This video has had so many interesting comments, (more than any of my other videos), which I'd never expected but I've enjoyed reading them all. The place and staff seem to have made a lasting and good impression on all who have responded. By the way, the allotment at 5.03 that you mentioned, is that the large square lawn area? Anyway, I'm happy to have brought back some apparently happy memories. Thank you for commenting and sharing your thoughts and memories, JimC.

      Hi, thanks for your reply to my comments I sent 2 was ago. It a strange coincidence that you replied yesterday (sat 8/7/23) as I was at Broughton In Furness. I put my bike on the train to Ulverston and from there I cycled all the way to Broughton in Furness. The weather was fine until I got to Grizebeck where it looked stormy over the Irish Sea. It stated to rain heavy as I arrived in Broughton In Furness. I took sheltered in the market square. It started to thunder and waited for ages before going down the old disused railway line that runs east of Broughton Tower. I took shelter under a railway bridge. At that point I went into the grounds of Broughton Tower where the lakes are. It appears that the lakes have been extended since the 1980s. It was still thundering and wasn’t too keen being near all those tall pine trees! I then went southwards to Wilson Park. The tall stone wall adjacent to the public footpath is where the school allotments were. The allotments appear to be gardens now. There was a straight path on the west side and a stone wall to the east where the public footpath to Wilson Park is. Broughton Towers was a very large estate. The “inner school grounds” that’s was out of bounds to the general public and still is today is the closest to the tower and includes the drive way to the south. The school allotments were within the inner grounds. The outer grounds to the far north where the lakes are have public rights of way across the land. This known as East Park and West Park. There are 2 names of Pupils I recognise in the comments. One of them is Shaun Warburton, the other is Billy Baldwin. One of the house parents who worked at Broughton Tower lived in terraced house on the west side of the market square. I was soaking wet and had to make the backbreaking journey back to Ulverston.

      There was an issue in sending the reply to as it appeared not to send but my reply was repeated a number of times when I was trying to send it so I deleted a few of them.

      @@DaveBeaven-tx2tp Oh dear, sorry to hear about your uncomfortable return to Broughton! You were unlucky, but no surprise with the current mixed weather we've been having. Shame your trip wasn't blessed with superb sunshine & blue skies, but I'm guessing that you enjoyed the visit anyways. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and memories - hope you didn't catch a chill or anything 'cos of the soaking you had. As a matter of interest, how far did you travel on the train? Hope that you manage to return with better weather. Cheers, JimC.

      Mo Charlesworth was a lovely small "dainty" lady from Chapel Cottage at Blawith,Jim Leece was an old school teacher, tweed jacket etc & his hair Bryll creamed from front to back, used to take us gardening in the gardens, i still remember him teaching me how to tell the time by the sun, a proper good chap & he lived at Baycliff on the coast road, he had a property near the Fishermans Inn, had Mermaid ornaments at the end of his drive (which are still there now) , also there was Dave Nicholson "Nicky"as they all got transfered from Stone Cross in Ulvererston to B.T in the mid 70's.
