First started in 2014, this channel began as a place to upload concert videos and fan-made trailers but this all changed in 2020 when it was relaunched under the moniker 'Den of Antiquities'. This new branding paved the way for the podcast 'Beyond Their Years' hosted alongside Aidan's late brother, Stanley Gula, as well as various video essays about Aidan's favourite movies and TV shows. With the launch of a second podcast 'Exterminating Doctor Who' in 2021, the channel was rebranded again. This time, to the much simpler 'Aidan Gula Media' where it remains today.
A Television & Radio Production graduate with experience in podcasts, short films, soundscapes, and audio drama, Aidan is always looking for new ways to expand his creativity through what has been described as a "unique brand of quirkiness".

why I liked Sutekh in Empire of Death | DOCTOR WHO review
As viewers of Doctor Who series 14 will now know, Sutekh was revealed to be the big bad of the series making an epic return in the finale after a 49 year absence. If you're familiar with this channel, you'll also know that two months before The Legend of Ruby Sunday and Empire of Death were released, I made a video stating that Sutekh was the number 1 villain that I wanted to return... so did the episodes meet my expectations? Fan reaction has been pretty poor to the finale, but I actually found a lot to like. This video is why I think Sutekh was handled well in Empire of Death.

9:27 Well they shouldn't. A film's quality should be judged on the acting, writing, directing, cinematography etc, not how many people from x group are in it. That doesn't indicate the quality of anything, let alone a film.
Well you got your wish The one who waits was Sutekh this must have been made before the latest series big reveal of who the main villain was going to be
@@lorrainebowe9585 czcams.com/video/tJNn_0Tfeuc/video.htmlsi=ly44RJ28_HKw4w4z
i didn't mind how sutekh and a good chunk of the two part ep but i felt alot of things felt cheep ( also they never explained how the sutekh works when it was split in the toy maker ep ) also there was point i like but there are points i don't like at all
You helped me realise I actually didn’t have a problem with how Sutekh was defeated, it was just how quickly it happened that made it seem anticlimactic. As many have said, another episode of exploring the desolate, dead universe might have made it more impactful. I like the idea of such a powerful being that has basically won but scuppers his plans because of his egotistical desire to know everything and his assumption that the answer must be something as important as him. There’s shades here of Sauron being defeated because of his inability to comprehend ordinary people trying to destroy the Ring. Like the mum reveal I think it could have been done better, but I like the idea
@@Paraves426 I only thought of this after I'd already uploaded this video, but I really think the UNIT getting dusted and the universe being destroyed scene should have been the cliffhanger for Legend and maybe even kill Ruby too. Then when the universe is at his command and he has nothing left to conquer, a bored Sutekh could then resurrect Ruby to answer the mystery of who her Mum is. I think narratively that would have tied everything together better rather than it feeling jumbled
@@AidanGulaMedia definitely agree about the cliffhanger, I like the latter idea too, would you have the Doctor be killed and resurrected too?
@@Paraves426 Possibly. Though you'd need a second narrative while Sutekh sits on high on his throne. Maybe he just managed to escape in the memory TARDIS before Ruby was killed. Seeing his guilt at letting the entire universe and his companion be killed would have given Ncuti something actually meaty to work with too.
I emotionally checked out of Doctor Who after "The Angels Take Manhattan" and I found it difficult to connect with Capaldi or Whitaker. However, with the return of RTD and Gatwa, I'm absolutely loving the show again. While the finale left some unanswered questions, it also left room for them to be resolved in the future. The emotional tension in "The Legend of Ruby Sunday" raised the stakes, making it hard to pay off.
The TARDIS was duplicated in "Giggle" the original is with the 14th doctor so why was Sutekh on this one? Or are there two Sutekhs?
@@juliandarch9278 RTD said a while back that 15's is the original and 14 has the copy
That makes even less sense, how is 14 a copy of 15? That's what you get if you go full RTD, never go full RTD 😂
@@juliandarch9278 The Doctors aren't copies, the TARDISes are. 15 went off in the universe in the original, while 14 was given the copy
Now separated, both Doctors challenged the Toymaker to their final game, which they won, with the Fourteenth Doctor banishing the Toymaker from existence as his reward. With a prize mallet in hand, the Fifteenth Doctor bi-generated their TARDIS as well so that he could continue adventuring while the Fourteenth Doctor could retire to heal from lifetimes of loss and battle until the time he was ready to undergo a full regeneration.
I suppose as the 15th doctor did it you could imply his was the original but it's just another plot hole that didn't need to happen.
i loved the finale, it brings me back a feeling that i haven't feel in a long time, it changes everything, i just wish that the series respect the audio dramas and comics
For me, the reveal of Ruby's mother is a problem only because it doesn't explain the snow and the hidden song.
I agree. I'm totally fine with her Mum being a nobody (which a lot of people aren't) but the unanswered questions of the snow and the song are the ones bothering me
I personally think it was either Mrs flood causing the snow or an echo of the time window
I believe the implication was that Sutekh's manifestation damaged time around the day of her birth
Oooo, can I ask where you found your music for this video? I think heard the Big Finish UNIT theme in there but I'm not sure on which release the music suite would come from. Sorry for such a niche question 😅 I really enjoyed this video, and this two part story. I'm so happy for Gabriel Woolf getting to be the first big bad of this new era, and being the second performer to be in all three eras of the show. I got to watch this in cinemas and it was honestly the most electrifying experience in the world, hearing his voice ricochet around me. Felt like I was being possessed 😱
It's the Past Lives music suite! I always use Big Finish music on my videos but didn't think anyone would notice!
Who was the first performer in all three eras? Mel?
@@AidanGulaMediadoes big finish not copyright these?
@@gbrogo7139 No. I turn the volume down so quiet that they just make nice background music.
So, two months after posting this video I actually got my wish and Sutekh returned to Doctor Who! However many fans weren't happy with the Series 14 finale... In this new video, I talk about why I actually really enjoyed Sutekh's appearance in Empire of Death... czcams.com/video/tJNn_0Tfeuc/video.htmlsi=jbutj9pjoNWA8g4x
I never really considered this....Given that his projections had harmed the 4th Doctor so much, I wondered why, (until, of course, the conclusion,) why he would he just leave the Doctor unmaimed. But I think your perspective is fascinating and valid. I personally didn't like the new design of Sutekh, but that's just me. Good video :D
Bruh admit you are a time lord rn 👀👀👀
What about the Mara? They were mentioned in the latest episode, but I would love to see them in the main show again.
This video came out 2 months before the series finale. I wouldn't have considered the Mara a God until that episode.
@@AidanGulaMedia They are still supernatural though. What would you have considered them?
This aged beautifully! I personally would've had the Trickster on the list, but that's just me
Idk, I think that there's a level of romanticism towards low budget production that while i empathise with on some level, because i absolutely agree that story is vital and sfx are not, I dont share. I dont think about the Zarbi and go "see thats why they shouldnt have tried", I see "damn, it's a shame they didn't have the money or technology"
This aged well!!!
wow this video is so well-made! good call too :)
The Beast and Sutekh have the same voice........
What about Omega!?!?!
I didn't include him as, even though he could be said to reach Godlike status, his origins are as a Time Lord rather than a supernatural or unknown entity
Why is Mara not on the list? She is a snake like demon who 5th Doctor came across twice. She possessed Tegan twice during two appearance. Unlike Sutekh who is a physical threat Mara is a psychological threat who gets in the minds of her victims. She is very simple to the Devil speading evil in the universe making the people around her evil!
We saw Sutek die, bringing him back destroys canon... It's like bringing back Palpatine in Star Wars. When they're dead, they're dead... Try and develop an imagination and do something else...
We never saw him die. We only saw him get trapped in a space time tunnel. It was estimated that he would still live for thousands of years in the tunnel. Hence why he's been able to return in books, comics, audios, and now the TV show.
@@AidanGulaMedia No, we hear the doctor say "he lived for ..." X amount of time, meaning he died, otherwise how would he know how long he lived for? You can't quantify life before death.
@@daveofyorkshire301 It was an estimation not fact. Once Sutekh entered the time tunnel, there's no way of knowing what happened to him. So it's definitely possible that he could get out again.
@@AidanGulaMedia Watch the episode again, I'm not arguing interpretation.
I do wish that they had made a little bit of a bigger deal with the salt if it’s repercussions are so big.
Oh, boy! You guys totally predicted the series finale with this one!
The writers Dared ......
Boy did not just badmouth Wild Blue Yonder
Never understood why people liked Missy, literally unbearable in every TV story other than WEAT/TDF - 'crazy, Flirty, camp' is just Stephen Moffat to a T
Just remember, the expanded universe is optionally Canon and the show ignores/validates the books/audio stories basically at random. Bring back the Gods of Ragnarok, love those freaky little guys
I feel like Sutekh's powers were exaggerated somewhat. If he can destroy the entire universe with just a thought, and that was his plan, then why didn't he do it? It is also not clear where his power comes from, and he is meant to be one of a race of many (the Osirans), so why would he have powers that are so much more powerful than everyone else 'just because'? He clearly must have a source for his power, and I don't think he can just kill everything at a moments notice, the Doctor in Pyramids of Mars implied that he would first start with Earth then move on to other worlds, I think he actually needs to be present within a certain radius for his powers to work. He was also imprisoned, so his powers aren't limitless or he would be able to simply escape. It was also implied that he can be destroyed, but that he wasn't because it was against the principles of the Osirans.
He didn't do it because then he would destroy himself. He still wants a universe to rule over. I just used that as an example for something he could do. But it is telling that in all of Sutekh's appearances (so far), he has never been at full power - which I think is very telling of how powerful he is. If writers deliberately need to restrict him, then it's clear he is of an immense power that isn't easily defeated. He was only defeated and imprisoned originally by others of the same race as him. But now he's the last of the Osirans so there's no one even remotely with his power out there
@@AidanGulaMedia then I guess hell destroy the universe with a thought and Doctor Who will be cancelled
I will like omega, morbius or the rani returned in RTD era
I wouldn't say any of those are supernatural villains though, just Time Lords...
I love Peter Capaldi and he’s up there as my favourite but I do see him as the doctor we got after the failure of the sixth doctor. Rather in a similar vein to James Bond actor’s Timothy dalton and Daniel Craig. The latter being praised a lot more highly. It shows that Colin baker and Timothy dalton were the right actors with the right ideas just the wrong time to present them. Both Capaldi and Baker’s doctors have horrendous tastes and are grumpy but they mellow and we began to like them a lot more. Not just proving the audience that they were wrong with their assumptions of said character but that the character too was also wrong behaviourally and therefore develops
One of these aged really well…
Sutekh's black pyramid is on Earth. The eye of Horus beams a restricting force field from Mars trapping him there.
One of the names of Sutekh is Satan and both speak with the same voice.
Well this aged too well
SUETEKH BACK BABY

4:38 He's back baby!
well then
Welllllllll you were right about the one who waits 🤣
Here was me saying I thought the Gods of Ragnarok were most likely to return, but I'd quite like Sutekh... Little did I know...
@AidanGulaMedia they still could
it's good that it's not comic accurate, because the original comics are EXTREMELY racist
I think im the only person in the world who cant see the new budget onscreen. The cinematography looks more like a soap than ever
Under Moffat, Doctor Who consisted of people standing round doing nothing but talking. Now it has a budget and should stay that way. No more stinkers such as 'Heaven Sent' and 'Hell Bent' please!
You mean Heaven Sent the greatest episode of all time?
