The Human Cost of Banning Abortion with Shefali Luthra - 264
Abortion is not just a political story; it's a personal one. In the two years since Roe was struck down by the Supreme Court in the Dobbs decision, a host of challenges has arisen for women, trans, and non-binary people seeking basic control over their own bodies. This week, Adam speaks with Shefali Luthra, author of Undue Burden: Life and Death Decisions in Post-Roe America, about the harrowing realities of the current state of abortion healthcare in America. My sympathies to women who are put in positions where they need an abortion. Planned Parenthood, imo, should be defunded and prosecuted for eugenics.

    I"m glad we just protected abortion right in the French Constitution this year! I'm horrified to see what's happening in the US. We can only abort in the first 12 weeks. Which I totally agree on because after that the brain is developped enough to start developping consciousness (that's also when the embryo starts being called a fetus).

    I'm of the mindset that abortion laws were fine the way they were. I'm not fully pto-choice but I'm not exactly pro-life either. I believe in a case by case thing. One of the issues I have (btw - not religious) is that only religious people seem to make the argument (is this a human being or not) that is being aborted. From a laymnan's view of science, that question is still fairly open-ended. From a strictly biological pov - yes it is A life. How much we decide to respectr that (developing) life is anothjer question. All that to the side, i perfectly understand health issues, etc. that should be covered. My main disagreement is when (some) people say 'people who didnt want to be pregnant' or words to that effect. I believe most rational people would agree that abortion should not be used as a form of birth control. I tend to believe when it comes to this subject that the main choice (strictly in a situation where consensual sex was made and there are no forseeable health issues) should be to NOT get pregnant in the first place. Anywho - I always find it interesting that the liberal position never addresses the main objection which is (are we killing babies) or not? As long as that question remains unanswered then this debate will go on forever. I dont believe in banning though, just a more thoughtful approach to the whole thing that (hopefully) someday answers that question and takes into account whether or not a fetus = a baby.despite the difference in lwording.

    • @TripAyes
      @TripAyes Před hodinou

      My personal opinion is it's none of my business what someone who is pregnant does with their pregnancy. That shit should be between a doctor and the patient and it never helps adding more people to that choice. Mind ya biz.

    • @NoChance18
      @NoChance18 Před hodinou

      "I believe most rational people would agree that abortion should not be used as a form of birth control." - Then your belief is incorrect. 70% of fertilized embryos will abort naturally. In the first trimester, a medical abortion functions in a mechanically identical matter. "The pill" doesn't prevent an embryo from being fertilized, it prevents it from attaching to the uterus (as happens naturally in 50% of the time). As noted in this interview, abortions appear identical to miscarriages because miscarriages are just natural abortions. Most rational people agree that if you support birth control: you support abortion because ultimately the mechanics and outcome are identical in 98% of cases. But also just, bodily autonomy is a fundamental right to a functional society. Consent to sex is simply not consent to pregnancy. If I invite you over for dinner, you don't have the right to bring your child and force me to take care of them for 9 months against my will. The idea that someone should be forced to care for a fetus because they made a "wrong" choice (they were ignorant to what causes pregnancy, failure of birth control used, slept with someone who lied about not ejaculating, etc.) is insane. There's no other aspect of modern life that we would treat in such an extreme manner. "I always find it interesting that the liberal position never addresses the main objection which is (are we killing babies) or not?" - Because it's obvious that we're not. Medical abortion isn't killing a fetus anymore than natural abortion is. We clearly don't actively try to save all natural abortions (and we could in 50%+ of cases, to be clear) and we don't make blood/organ donation legally mandatory (meaning, you aren't legally *required* to use your body to save the lives of others). So even if you say a fetus is a person at conception (which, is medically absurd. It's medically identical to a corpse in 98% of cases), refusing to save someone is NOT killing them. And finally, as pointed out in this interview: Having the main objection being "are we killing babies or not" misses the entire point of the legal system. Making abortion illegal kills more humans, both adults and fetuses, then having it be legal. The way that abortion laws work in some US states right now: My mother and I would have died when she was pregnant with me (I was born through an emergency abortion). If you care about saving lives: making abortion illegal simply doesn't actually do that. All it does is punish women for having sex.

    • @theword7268
      @theword7268 Před 34 minutami

      @@TripAyes Thats fine. But question - is a fetus a baby or not? Are babies being killed or not? are we using the word fetus to create some distance between the act and the thoughts we have about the act? None of my biz, sure. But at the same time I do find it interesting in the same way I find it interestuing when people say we shouldn't eat cats or dogs (at least in America) but have no issues with eating factory raised chickens. Is that a cultural bias or something rooted in science?

      You want liberals to answer questions? Interesting stance. I’m not liberal, I see myself as Libertarian. I learned in school about the Zygote, embryo, fetus, neonate (baby). If I have a deeply held spiritual belief that the zygote inside me is my baby, I am allowed to believe that. If I believe that abortion is murder, I have the freedom to believe that too. No can make me have an abortion. As a former educator, I wish you could understand how glib it is to sit and assume from on high that all women have equal information about and access to birth control. Why won’t the right wing discuss this pivotal issue or answer questions? If women all had the same access to information and facts about our bodies, sexuality, sex, birth control, and pregnancy free from misogyny, misinformation, and purity culture bullshit, I could 100% be on board with you.

    I'm from Texas & when I was a kid I had a relative who gave birth in the 6th month, but sadly the child didn't live long because their organs weren't fully developed. My relative later found out that she had a blood condition that she was prescribed medication for & was able to have another child. Ever since then before I even knew what Roe V. Wade was my thoughts on being "pro-life" vs. "pro-choice" have always been abortion is fine in the 1st & 2nd trimesters since it's likely the child can't survive outside the womb on their own, but in the 3rd trimester it depends on if the birth will effect the life of the mother.

    • @trajectoryunown
      @trajectoryunown Před hodinou

      The survival rate is 40% at 24 weeks and rises by about 10% per week from there. So the time should be a bit before the second trimester, but I feel where you're coming from. Nobody's going to make progress with the "human life begins at conception" argument. While that's _technically_ true, it can't reasonably be used as the legal baseline for determining when the human rights kick in. And nobody's going to win an argument against secular society on the matter. If we want to make progress we have to *work together,* and I firmly believe that the survivability of a fetus outside of the womb is a much less divisive topic with more objective data that people can reach a consensus on. If you're still in favor of abortion _after_ that point, you can just drop the pretenses and advocate for infanticide to be a parental right.

    This was an interesting discussion and did bring something to light. The conversation became very clear talking about education. When everyone could have access to education the overall cost changed. Why? Education should be free, but as we continue to move forward it is becoming not affordable for anyone including white people. Only the wealthy can afford a decent education. This country is damaged and our long history and problem with skin tone is leading us into an situation where we will have to depend on other countries for any innovation. Most of the educated countries lack the freedoms that are required to develop critical thinking skills which is a key component of innovation. This is why countries like China are only good at copying our technology they are terrible at creating new and innovative things because of their lack of independent thinking.
