When we talk about racism in America, we tend to focus on the harm inflicted upon people of color, while rarely focusing on the ways that white people indirectly benefit from a racist culture. Author Tracie McMillan explores this concept of The White Bonus in her latest book, exploring the tangible financial benefits associated with being white in America. In this episode, Adam speaks with Tracie about white Americans reckoning with their privilege, the interconnectedness of racial and class conflicts, and how racism serves as the foundation of the widening class gap in the nation. Racism is create/uphold by white people. Whites are the only ones that can be racist cause they are born from the wombs that births it in already setup system. The creation of racism/whitness is to harm Black people globally everyday. Since nobody chooses their parents/race that mains not all whites are bad people but it’s not the majority and that why we are still dealing with racism today. Black women globally suffer the most from racism even today cuz how skin, womanhood, mannerism, and our natural hair/also our cultural hairstyles are constantly under attack from ever groups of people on this planet. No other groups of women have to fight/pass a CROWN ACT LAW anywhere in the world just to wear their hair, but yet black women rise, evil never wins. Black women and her offspring was/is used to create white men/women structure/system and this is why most black women don’t/will never date/marry white men. When B-WM do date/marry it will be a curtain kind of white man who is brave, strong and kind cause his bloodline cursed to come will need it for their children. if most white people are good people like they say, why are we still talking about racism and the evil act that comes from it today?

Poor whites are slowly realizing what is happening, they can see it's a "class" issue more than racial but you get upper-middle class whites saying we're all racists instead of owning their specific position. Trust me, minorities have the support of the majority of people, it's the privileged upper-middle class who can't own it as a "class" problem. So now it's everyone's problem, like punishing all the kids instead of the specific kid who broke the rule. It's lazy.
They talk about "raising" us all up to 'their level' but try talking about them having to give up a little, you'll see the rage build up in their eyes. The privileged aren't going to give up their position in life. The privileged have a hard time owning their mistake and don't have to because of power. So they do this crap and talk about it generally and pragmatically as a systematic problem vs the problem of ego, ignorance and emotion. Because when you act clinical and non-emotional everyone else is the basket case and the problem, not the talking heads posing as allies perpetuating the issues trying to divide those without.

Drives me nuts, especially since those terms are rarely used to genuinely include other groups, and when they are, they serve as sugary euphemisms for people to be dishonest about meaning "everyone but the y-tes." Say what you mean, people, but probably a reason why that phrase sounds awful, hence euphemism. Plus when it's predominately used by y-tes inherently in the capacity I noted, just more complication and concerning irony.

You guys should look up Dr. Frances Cress Welsing. She breaks down the terminology very well psychologically. When we hold on to just being “Black” we don’t dig deeper into our past/ancestors. We believe our story begins with slavery in America and not in the BCE. I sometimes refer to myself as Melanated or a person of color to keep the door of curiosity open. We’re so much more than just Black, and it’s important we begin to breakdown where we each descend from besides, American Slavery.

White people like to pretend like there's some MATHEMATICALLY PERFECT, scientific, and "objective," race-blind mechanism to asses "merit" that somehow PRECLUDES implicit bias (which ALWAYS benefits whites because whites HAVE ALMOST ALL THE EXISTING STRUCTUAL POWER - you know, thanks to slavery, Jim Crow, prohibitions on blacks ability to attend tertiary institutions, receive credit, housing, free money and, you know, HISTORY).
CEOs, Federal and State Judges, head of school boards, the boards of directors of most companies, doctors, hospital presidents, police commissioners, the people who run most of the Admissions departments in MOST schools (especially elite schools), etc. ARE MOSTLY WHITE. The most POWERFUL DECISION MAKERS IN SOCIETY are white. So blacks are already at a disadvantage when it comes to implicit bias (because implicit bias is ONLY really important when there's a structural power imbalance, and in America that power imbalance is ubiquitous).
People should Google what percentage of BLACK VETERANS received the full benefits of the GI BILL. Tiny.
People should Google what percentage of black freemen and sharecroppers received the Homestead act. Tiny.
      Book recommendations:
      1. "The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America" by Richard Rothstein.
      2. "The Color of Money: Black Banks and the Racial Wealth Gap" by Mehrsa Baradaran.
Start with those two and then TELL ME WE SHOULDN'T PAY REPARATIONS TO BLACK AMERICANS. Please, reparations should be MANDATORY. Heck, Ronald Reagan paid victims of the Japanese Internment camps REPARATIONS. Black Americans have been through FAR, FAR, FAR, FAR, FAR WORSE than Japanese Americans experienced in those dreadfully xenophobic concentration camps. A total of 1,862 Japanese people died from medical problems while in the internment camps. About one out of every 10 of these people died from tuberculosis. BLACK AMERICANS HAVEN'T RECEIVED ANYTHING, but Reagan paid the Japanese.
White America seems to go out of their way to hate black Americans with a kind of vitriol that can only be explained by racism and fascism. Heck, SOME white people will even say "well blacks already got reparations, it's called a welfare check." Which, of course, is itself a racist statement. I think we need to PERSISTENTLY argue that America IS A RACIST COUNTRY UNTIL, and only UNTIL, reparations to black Americans are paid. Until then, we should continue to advance the notion that America is a racist country (because it is, until the empirical data suggests otherwise). White Americans, for some perverse reason, seem to think blacks are responsible for their plight. And it's a BAFFLING exercise in ANTI-HISTORY and DENIALISM. This is also another indication that America is a racist country.
I mean, if we are running a race and I (whites) get to start at the 70 meter mark, while you start at the 0 meter mark, you will invariably lose the race. And in a CAPITALIST SYSTEM, the rich (and their progeny) get richer, which means this INEQUALITIES GET OSSIFIED ACROSS GENERATIONS. The problem of the racial wealth gap, for instance, is only going to get worse. The black-white racial wealth gap is worse NOW than it was in 1962 (during Segregation). Apartheid America had LESS income inequality by race than integrated America in 2024, for reasons I've already stated.
Charles Fredrickson, a black man, invented the plane before the Wright Brothers but was never credited due to racism. Charles Drew pioneered the extraction technique for blood plasma and plasmapheresis and his achievements were ignored for years. I could go on. The ancient Egyptians were black. And the Greeks, and later the Romans, learned everything from the Egyptians. We need a properly accounting of history. That might help this discourse.
Like, irrespective of race, people BORN INTO POVERTY, have less chances to excel in school, are FAR LESS LIKLEY to attend university etc. And blacks in America have disproportionately HIGHER rates of POVERTY. Blacks are 13% of the population but make up about 44% of the total prison population. Blacks get longer sentences for the same offenses as white. Blacks are 4 to 7 times MORE likely to receive the death penalty. If a white murders a black person, they get 20 years in prison (e.g. Patrick Philip Byrne in Washington); if a black murders a white person, even if all the facts suggest it was an accident, they get the death penalty (e.g. William Henry Furman in Georgia). Why? MOST of the judges are white. MOST of the prosecutors are white. MOST of the ____(insert VERY important and powerful position here)____are white.
White people received affirmative action for centuries - Homestead act, access to credit, access to housing etc. Color-Blindness is NOT REAL as it presupposes we've reached some kind of post-racial utopia (lol). We have NOT achieved color-blindness yet because not only is racism alive and well, but it's so deeply embedded in so many different aspects of modern life that any change to the status quo will necessarily require whites to give up undeserved privilege. That's going to be tough but it's DOABLE. And yet, somehow, white people are always complaining that blacks are the ones getting "undeserved" preferential treatment when IN FACT all the data says that WHITE WOMEN have been the biggest beneficiaries of Affirmative Action and you are MORE LIKELY to get a job as a white man without a college degree than a black man WITH a college degree. I mean, cmon. How are people supposed to ascend up the social motility ladder WITHOUT OPPORTUNITIES. Blacks are being, and have been denied for centuries, OPPORTUNITIES.
If we could CHANGE how education is funded, that would be huge. If we could CHANGE the welfare laws, that would be huge. If we could REINSTITUTE Affirmative Action (but this time with explicit pathways for young black students to attend college by having state-funded mentorship programs).
We CAN achieve this. But it will require more white people like me to give a damn. And sadly, I suspect 45% of whites are either racist or completely indifferent to racism (which, imo, is just as bad). Which, despite my patently heavy-handed approximations, is FAR too high a number. But it does leave 55% of whites who, with the right EXPOSURE to the TRUTH ABOUT AMERICAN HISTORY, will, imo, support any racial justice initiatives. 2020 gave me hope. Younger white kids, i hope, are less racist than their parents and grandparents, because if the BLM protests were any indication, there's an appetite for civil disobedience...an appetite for CHANGE. The Palestinian protests are also a HEALTHY sign that society hasn't entire lost its moral economy.
The sad part is my own grandfather, who I'm trying to love, is RACIST AS HELL. Incorrigibly so. I've tried and tried and tried to change him, to disabuse him of his racist views with facts upon facts upon facts. He REFUSES to change, and he will die a racist fool. I love him, but he is still a racist fool and, if God considers the hateful spirit of racism a sin, then he will probably not be going to heaven (I told him this to his face, and he still didn't budge). Naturally, we don't talk. I can't be around somebody that hateful. It's disgusting and IRRATIONAL. But if he's symptomatic of MANY more people (especially 60 years and over), and he assuredly is, then wholesale changes will have to be federal and paternalism (a la LBJ's Great Society).
People should read up on WHY the Equal Credit Act of 1974 was passed. Because blacks, irrespective of how great their credit scores were, were being DENIED credit. That was unheard of if you were a white person.
We NEED DEI that specifically targets African Americans (not white women); we NEED affirmative action that specifically targets African Americans (not white women).
START PETITIONING CONGRESSMAN, at the local and state and federal level, that will support anti-racist policies and racism-mitigation policies. VOTE for policy makers who support CRIMINAL justice reform and EDUCATION reform (underfunded).
The irony is, states like Texas which have no state-income tax, have HIGH property taxes but they still have UNDERFUNDED school districts.
I'm hopeful that one day, we will get another Lincoln, FDR, or LBJ. A president with real power and a modicum of moral clarity as it pertains to race.

Incidentally, Kevin Costner's character (which was created for the movie) knocks down the sign at the "COLORED" women's bathroom in the building where the colored lady "computers" were located. This action doesn't inform white women using the ladies room in the building with the other (white) male NASA engineers, that all ladies of all colors should be able to access the "WHITE ONLY" ladies room. Wow....Iam a Black South African man in my 40's, first time watching the Adam Conover podcast and this episode was like getting punched in the stomach. My sincere apologies if this may come across the way it does but Iam always left in awe when White people are so frank, honest and forthright about racism and how White people in general benefit from racism. I consider myself to be a relatively intelligent human being, a critical thinker who's understanding and reasonable, who prides himself in being a humanist, speaking for myself as a Black person, when I speak about racism with White people, it often feels like we're on two different planets.
Thankyou very much sharing this episode with us. I think what Adam said at the end of the interview summoned up everything so well and he hit it on the nail..." The cost benefit analysis of racist policies does not benefit White people in the end"....and as Adam said, 'you're cutting off your noses to spite your face'...thats how deep racism goes and as a South African, I should know, racism runs deep in our country and I don't know what it will take for our White brothers and sisters in South Africa to see and acknowledge it. Denialism, deflecting and being defensive about how racism policies like Apartheid benefitted White people back then and how Apartheid still benefits White South Africans till today is real and heartbreaking.
Institutionalized and systemic racism doesn't die, it just morphs into something else that's more subversive and sinister. Black people have been fighting racism for more than 400 years, we're tired. It now takes brave White men and women like Adam and Tracie to take the baton and to shine a light on the evil that it is. Racism will never be resolved and put to an end by Black people, only White people as a collective can do that by being more conscious on how institutionalized and systemic racism actually works.
Thankyou Adam for having the kahunas to bring this topic to our attention, it was quality content and thankyou to your guest Tracie Mcmillan, she was on point.

I think this conversation very eloquently highlights these ideas of cutting off ones nose to spite their face. It's like how we so often how we talk about how patriarchy hurts men too.
I've always thought of it like a 100 meter race where the average middle class white person starts at the 75 meter point and everyone else is starting somewhere between the negative 20 meter point and the 20 meter point.
However, the truth is that racism has pushed us so far back that what was 100 meter race 50-70 years ago is now a 400 meter race.
White people are still starting at the 100 meter yard line, but now they have to run 300 meters just to accomplish the same things that their grandparents did with 1/12 of the effort. People of color might be starting at the 10 to 50 meter point, but we still have to run a 350-390 meter race.
I know this comment is going long, but I was speaking to my mother yesterday about how I'm about to surpass an annual salary of 6 figures and yet I'm not living lavishly. I have two cars that have an average age of 20 years old. I am living comfortably and I can cover unexpected expenses as long as they are not crazy big. If I made this much money 40 years ago, I would be classifibly rich and that's what is so crazy to me.

I'm a Black American and I grew up largely in the suburbs around many white folks. However my highschool was probably 30% black which is more than 2x the national black population. That said, my interpretation of what regular working class white folks don't understand is that almost EVERYTHING is for you. When you walk in a room almost everyone is white. When you turn on the TV, walk down the street, go to the store ect. What white Americans get is the comfort of always being the majority and default. You don't have to explain your culture. You don't have to question if your experience in a situation was hindered because of your skin color. Almost every depiction in media of an unambiguously heroic figure is a white person. American society is defaulted to whiteness.
Lately society is moving towards more equitable representation, but it's been a white society forever in this country. I personally much prefer approaching issues in society based on class rather than race, but imagine what its like to live your entire life as the other. White supremacy will never be defeated unless we end capitalism. It's sad that you can talk with such insight about racial inequities, but when it comes to doing something about it, the only answers you can imagine are mainly about white people learning not to be so racist. But individual moral solutions will not work. The system must be changed from the ground up.

Actually, it will end when a majority of Blacks come back to Jesus and call on him like they did when they were biblically slaves in Egypt. "Man cannot live on bread alone." That is what he is waiting for. Many ppl in this world, including Whites, claim to be Christians but only know him by name. Blacks had the responsibility as true Israelites "chosen people", disciples, to spread the word of God, but instead, the Caucasians did so under the false guise of evangelism (for greed and profit), while Blacks decided to perpetuate the golden calf of paganism. That is part of the reason he has allowed the oppression for so long, which follows biblical patterns of punishment, for disobedience to Jesus.

That begins CHANGE if all parties involved are genuine and understand how to repair presumably lost causes as well as how we ALL are connected. If I'm good and we are friends, but you are having a downtrodden moment...guess what? I'm to HELP YOU. My point is that we should all want our neighbors to be as strong and solvent as possible. If not for racism we might just have advanced further as a society by now. Be well. Thanks again❤
Edit: I want to add because I think this is important that I do not have a problem with people helping their 'own'...I have a problem with the repeated sabotage of black people and our families, neighborhoods. It should be obvious now, but may not be as these tactics go back to Jim Crow to the 80's.

Another good example of this is tipping. America imported the concept of tipping after slavery because white employers didn't want to pay their black service workers. Laws meant to benefit workers, like minimum wage, excluded jobs that black people held, so many black people only made tips. Fast forward to today, and the effect of those policies now impacts all kinds of people with service jobs.

I've mentioned this already a few times: Poor whites are slowly realizing what is happening, they can see it's a "class" issue more than racial but you get upper-middle class whites saying we're all racists instead of owning their specific position. Trust me, minorities have the support of the majority of people, it's the privileged upper-middle class who can't own it as a "class" problem. So now it's everyone's problem, like punishing all the kids instead of the specific one who broke the rule.

I deleted my original metaphor because I devised a new one which is less violent.... Racism is a thief. Racism steals $20 from the white worker, but $80 from the Black worker. Both workers are harmed, but one is harmed more severely. The goal is for neither worker to be harmed and for both to be "made whole." To make each whole means giving them what was stolen. That is where the race politics in America worked. To make the white worker whole, he is given back his $20, and the Black worker is given back his $80, but then.. some Republican politician, voted into office by the Thief (whose campaign was funded by the money stolen from both workers), points at the scene and says, "Ah hah, discrimination. You gave the white worker only $20, but gave the Black Worker $80, so THAT is discrimination." Then the Federalist Society Supreme Court agrees, and decides that neither worker gets anything, and the Thief gets to keep the $100 he stole, which he can use to buy more politicians and Justices. Both workers, meanwhile, remain harmed, but one is harmed more and one is harmed less, and the working class is divided, because the white worker can think, "well, this system sucks. I had my $20 dollars stolen, but, hey, at least I didn't have $80 stolen, and I don't want to make waves, because I don't want to end up losing $80".
If there was solidarity, the white worker would get what was owed to him and the Black worker would, too, but the white worker would recognize that the $20 and $80 just made them equal, and was not the discrimination that the Federalist Society, working on behalf of the Thief, declared it to be. (And yes, we can make a similar argument around sex and gender discrimination, as well, with a similar mechanism)

I can only speak as an Asian American. We've always been pit against each other. The model minority myth, the myth of animosity between the Black community and the Pan-Asian diaspora, hell, even treating all Asians as the same. There was a publication that came out in the 60s called "American Success: Japanese American Style", which paved the way for Asian Americans to become the model minority. And that pit everyone against each other, with White people looking at us and saying, "let them fight" while they reap the benefits of our labor and endeavors.
Unfortunately there is a sizeable component of our greater community who talks about assimilating into White society at any cost, even if that means perpetuating that model minority myth and throwing other non-white folks under the bus. Think things like gentrification and cultural commodification. It's a complicated affair, and I don't see this being fixed anytime soon, but maybe as White people get more conscious of their inherent privilege, they'll be more willing to listen to the plights of other communities.

If "assimilating into white culture" means not hating white people, respecting local culture and contributing to the local economy then I don't think that is wrong.
Dont get me wrong. I understand that most people of color arent really given much of a choice when it comes to how society treats them. That should be addressed, but i dont think the answer is "shame the minorities that are doing well"

@@madmintentertainment6268 this is untrue. We Asians certainly don't face the level of discrimination that black people do, but we have never been treated as good as white people. How Asians perform in the stats has everything to do with which Asians the government has allowed to enter the US: mostly skilled workers after WW2. But once our families are in the States, we face obstacles in terms of career advancement (Bamboo Ceiling), sexism (hyper-sexualization of Asian women, de-sexualization/emasculation of Asian men), and racial stereotyping and negative portrayals in media (STEM nerds, anime culture, Kpop idols, kung-fu masters). During times of crisis (Pearl Harbor, Covid) or times of competition (building of the railroads, Cold War, economic rise of China), we are deemed untrustworthy and treated as liabilities, with our inhumane treatment under "security measures" often going ignored (e.g. internment camps, immigration and miscegenation bans, assaults on the elderly, etc.). Asians aren't a monolith (Asia is after all the largest and most populous continent on Earth), and we're composed of many groups. The income equality among Asians has more than doubled over the past 50 years, and some groups (Pakistani, Hmong, Cambodian, and Burmese communities) aren't "doing well" and have high rates of poverty. Most Asian-Americans do not benefit much from intergenerational wealth. Conservatives accuse us and our parents of making "anchor babies", who aren't "real Americans", and we are told more than any other demographic to "assimilate or go home". We are perceived as being perpetual foreigners whose languages and cultural traditions are only interesting and appreciated when white people travel to Asia and "discover" them for the first time (why did famous creators like Logan Paul and Johnny Somali make content focusing on directly mocking random, normal people in Japan?). Unrecognized, subconscious racial biases against us negatively affect us in ways that often go undocumented or ignored, particularly in terms of sex and dating, mental and medical health, and a general lack of empathy towards us for the challenges we face each day. We Asians are only "white" when we are treated as honorary whites, but we're certainly a great tool to use when you want to shame black people and other minorities for simply demanding social and economic equality.

I live in a place where they like to think there is no black part of town, because they make sure to sprinkle a few bold white people in with us. But ask anyone about the black part of town and there’s two places they point to. Mind you, they also sprinkle a few black people in the white areas. Mostly because those of us who are in a position to buy a house, can get into those areas. Not to omit the white home owners who have no problem renting to us. But I have made arrangements over the phone to see a house, and on arrival I was promptly told “I’m not going to waste your time, I’m not renting to you”. So whether it’s by the system or leftover conditions of the system, it’s still redlining.

Correct, but the theft your refering to continued into the the 20th century, there were many stable, prosperous black communities (see Thomas Sowell), until white terrorism which was State sponsored, destroyed them (Forsyth county, Georgia as an example), and lets not forget the Homestead Acts, and who was really behind the Civil Rights Movement, J. Edgar Hoover, etc., etc, etc.

all you need to do to understand how we as a society got to this point is look at history and facts. Many aspiring black communities were destroyed eliminating the chance for generational wealth for many for example Greenwood, Tulsa, Oklahoma “Black Wall Street” (May 31 - June 1, 1921). There have been many laws passed to disenfranchise African Americans in the us. The GI bill created by the government to help soldiers(white) created ghettos and suburbs. These ghettos where then over policed due to the war on drugs (where cocaine was planted in communities by the CIA) prison like anything else is business, more prisoners = more money. This is where the no fathers joke stems from because for some reason crack(black form of cocaine) is worse than coke(white form of cocaine)? so blacks got more jail time. The jobs followed creating wealth gaps. School funding is based on property values. As a result many of schools become underfunded and staffed. These students also lack the means of proper mental, physical, and phycological help. Its hard to understand the importance of education when u are hungry, cant read because u dont have glasses, or have undiagnosed learning disabilities such as adhd or dyslexia. Those that do value education are often over looked because of where they came from. so a loop is created. There is a rare chance you escape the loop for most its sports or music. The music often talks about the lifestyle and struggles faced within the community. Many children look up to these people because similar circumstances. just like most of us dont aspire to be rappers because it seems out of the realm of reality, many of them dont aspire to be a lawyer or businessman, astro naught etc. As result of all this many resort to violence and crime. i skipped some parts but thats a light summary.every culture has its struggles. If we better tried to understand one another instead of pointing fingers and not doing our own research, maybe we could make some real change. if u got questions lmk

Some of what you typed is ahistorical. When has the black community not been over-policed? During slavery? The black codes? Possibly during Jim Crow?
As for aspirational professions within the black community, the people who gave us the CRM, for ex. Julian Bond, voiced their concerns that our upper class was rapidly becoming one of entertainers, as too many college-educated black folk were either being shut out of the middle class or outright evicted. They said this in 1977 as I was preparing to head off to Northwestern.

Originally not everyone was considered white for example white Italians and Jews were all seen as lower class and subject to living in ghettos and having gang cultures, long before it was seen as black culture. It wasn't until id say following ww2 if you had light enough skin everyone you were considered white and got a shot at free housing and education if you fought in the war. Id like to believe its possible to get rid of labels and just have everyone be American but its too ingrained and deep at this point but if we did it for the Italians, Jews, etc.. we can do it again.

After George Floyd was murdered I remember asking myself some of these hard questions. What breaks had o been given, what jobs, living situations, etc had I gotten because I won the birth lottery, even though I did not grow up in an affluent family. I know a lot of people who came from where I did have a difficult time asking those questions because it is built on the premise that we did not “pull ourselves up by our bootstraps” even though we work hard to get where we are. One has to face that this is not a meritocracy and we all don’t get rewarded evenly based on the output of our labor or effort.

It’s amazing to see Adam’s recognition of how deeply psychological and powerful racial resentment and anti-blackness is.
I like when she says she’s tired of trying to convince white ppl that there’s benefit from diversity to them instead of it being the right thing to do. When I worked at Facebook, I remember being at an “all hands” meeting where Mark encouraged diversity by saying it is proven to improve productivity.
It’s such a disingenuous argument. It’s part of the reason their excuse for DEI doesn’t work because white coworkers think their positioning was forced if they aren’t the magical productive hire they were expecting.

    • @brianmeen2158
      @brianmeen2158 Před měsícem

No the reason many don’t think DEI is working is because much of the data that has come out about it has shown that it has had numerous negative effects all the while not increasing the % of people of color in each position.. the flack about DEI is toxic enough to where Don Lemon is now calling it out!
Of course there are benefits to diversity but only as long as there are common values for the groups to adhere to. There are also
Negatives - overall trust goes down
Quite a bit when you have different groups living amongst each other.

It's been an interesting experience. When co-workers find out my last name they seem to either get quiet like they feel guilty of something or get offended as if I tricked them (as if my skin color was controlled by a light switch and I didn't turn it off for them to make my last name make sense). I do hear a lot of "anti-Mexican" racist jokes aimed at darker skinned people as if I'm not one of them. Hindsight will tell me that being in this community from grade school on, I've had racist insults thrown at me when I wasn't paying attention and I'd be like "Ohhh... That's why they said that." Because it blind-sides me more than anything. I don't expect it because I was raised in a traditional American Caucasian upbringing so I'm more white trash than Hispanic, into video games, metal/hair bands, skater styles, MTV, etc. so when it came at me I'd be more confused in the moment and then on thinking about why they acted strange and what was happening at the time sometimes it clicked. Now that I'm grown up I notice it all the time. The silences, the random jokes at my last name's expense, over-hearing the indirectly racist jokes after someone (customers mostly, only a few coworkers) interacts with some of the more native Spanish speakers on staff. A surprising amount of racism coming from the broccoli haired male teens that come in. It's weird. You think this latest generation would not be like that and be more in-tune with things. Oh well.
