An outstanding video (as usual) that I enjoy revisiting from time to item to refresh my memory. My love for my Z6 and Z30 keeps growing and growing. On another note, congrats for hat NBA championship ring with the Celtics and for the gold medal with the USA national team, hehe. Sorry, I cold not help it.

I was using pinpoint focus outdoors and had poor results with it- a high percentage of my photos were out of focus. I was using it because the static objects I was focusing on were smaller, the pinpoint focus box was similar in size to my subjects, any other focus box was significantly larger. The focus box would turn green but would not be in focus. This was with a Z6ii and Nikon 70-200 f4 using back button focus.

great vid. being totally fed up with the weight of the F mount 300 f2.8 and 600 f4, finally bit the bullet and have a z8 arriving. then the decisions really begin. what to replace that glass with. ordered the 400 f4.5, since there is no Z 300mm, and considering this 800mm to accompany it. shoot wildlife...

Thanks for this video. I thought, I could be wrong of course, that the Z cameras have some internal noise reduction applied to the raw files, in camera, that can't be turned off so this may not be comparing apples to apples.

NIkon z lens is easily BETTER. sharper, contrasty, bokah, not as bulky or heavy as the Viltrox. Just buy a used one of the Nikon. Why by cheap glass for the best full frame camera !

My experience with the F mount lenses is that only the 300 f2.8 and 400 f2.8 lenses handled the 2.0 well. I have travelled all over Africa with the 300 f2.8 vr ii using the 1.4 ii, 1.7ii and 2.0iii. The key was the fact that I had every camera I used properly focus calibrated/aligned with the lens and the converters. Once set-up the results were fantastic. I also had a 200-400 f4 vrii and did the same with the TC1.4iii. The f-mount needed proper calibration even the naked lenses. I spend hours making sure that this was done and before every major trip I would check again. I now use the 1.4 S on my 400 f4.5 and it is very impressive.

after switching from the 24-70 f/4 about a year and a half ago, this lens is still a revelation in function, practicality and image quality. sharp A.F. wide open across the whole focal range, very well controlled loca and flares, and reasonably good close focusing capability as an added bonus. I truly think this lens comes close to a "one and done" for the Z mount - it lives on my Z6 II almost all the time now.

This review is eye opening. I just received the 50mm 1.8 and am super happy with it. I am a professional pet photographer and it's not my style to take photos wide open. I seldom go below F4 as I want the eyes to nose to be sharp. I'm also a little jaded regarding F1.2 and F1.4 lenses because they weren't very good in the DSLR days. I determined a long time ago that F1.4 F mount lenses were not worth the price difference. In fact, they didn't always focus as accurately as their F1.8 counterparts even at F1.8. So, I stuck with the F1.8's. I figured that in the Z mount the F1.2 would be useable wide open. I did not expect it to be much sharper in general and I just love the micro-contrast and out of focus areas. Your review might have just cost me a ton of money. I might even photograph pets at a wider aperture than normal to add a more dreamy look. So, in this case, I think the F1.2 is worth it for a lot of photographers.

  • @JasonHawkesAerialPhototgraphy

On a z9 there's a setting that you can change so that when looking through the viewfinder and taking a shot there are lines that will come across the viewfinder, I seem to remember there were various options of how this looked when I set it up. Ive looked and looked ( for at least three minutes ) but can't see where this setting is and really want to try and change it, any idea?

To me the 70-200f/4 is rendering a warmer hue especially noticable in whites and spectral highlights on all the textured black midtones .I suspect this would be great to enhance skin tones in portaiture work .Wheras the 24-200 as with all z lenses is much more clinical in its rendition which makes sense as the 70--200 would be geared to work with early sensors and film .I have noticed this clinical rendering by swapping various f primes with the z mount counter parts .Of cource all this is erelevent when post processing enters the arena Your vids are truly fantastic and i imagine a lot of work put into each video .

I think this video sealed the deal for me. I have really wanted the 100-400 for so long. I rented it for a week last year and fell in love with it. A big plus with the 100-400 is close focusing distance. I think though I can live with out that for the extra telephoto ability the 180-600 offers.

I know I'm late to this thread since its a year old. Just to pick up on a point that Ricci mentioned, I did in fact have the grip work lose from the camera just enough to interrupt power to the camera. I thought I had tightened it more than enough but it still worked loose. Took me several minutes to figure it out because it was only barely loose. Missed some key shots as a result. Won't make that mistake again. I check it now every time I pick up the camera.

I have spent the last few days with the 35mm 1.4Z and the Sigma Art 35mm 1.4 f mount on my Z7II. The sigma is still sharper. The nikon will get even around f3.2 and probably reach its peak at f5.6. Corner sharpness is better for the sigma, if it matters to your work. The field of view is very slightly wider on the sigma, but it feels like an in-lens correction on the nikon side to correct the distortion. The sigma has slightly more contrast as well and has a cooler colour rendition. The purple fringing is there indeed in the nikon, but a slider move in LR corrects it. I guess we will soon have a lens profile. I personally find the bokeh quite pleasing on the nikon side. I guess it's a question of preference. The biggest benefit of the z lens is the weight. If you add up the sigma, its lens hood and the ftz adapter, it reaches 835g. The nikon is half the weight. For contextual portaits and street photography I think it is an interesting lens option with a different character. If you need a better corner sharpness it might not be the best tool.
